Important 4BR Official Tier List v2.0 - Voting Thread

As members of the Smash 4 Back Room, we have a role to fulfill that is highly recognized among the Smash community. Yes, it's time to make our first revision to our tier list for Smash 4.

With the Summer of Smash being well underway, and patches seeming to be outright over, the metagame is starting to stabilize. While there are many aspects of the game that are still debated in terms of rulesets (Miis, Stagelists, Stocks and the Suicide Clause being the 4 aspects that are still under frequent debate), the metagame has reached one of it's highest levels of stability, with many characters in this game being reasonable threats and a variety of characters winning regional, national and global tournaments, or at least placing very high.

Important things to note:

• Customs are generally relegated to side events or outright not allowed at tournaments altogether. Assume they are are banned with your vote.
• Consider the most recent patch, Version 1.1.6. Do note that outside of Bayonetta changes, this version is basically identical to 1.1.5.
• Your tier list must include, at the least, all characters in the game, with the exception of Mii Fighters (more on that below) for a total of 55 characters. Otherwise, incomplete votes will not be accepted. For reference, here are the required characters:

• Miis: We understand that there are a variety of different rulings when it comes to Mii Fighters. The three most common rulings are 1111 Miis, Guest XXXX Miis, or no Miis entirely. After your vote, if you are so inclined then please list where you would rank 1111 Miis and/or Guest XXXX Miis (assuming that special moves could not be changed mid-set). This is optional and will be an addendum on the actual Tier List; you are not required to put Miis on your vote. General notation for Miis should look something like this:

We are aware of the difficulties that come with ordering this many characters, with some characters having vastly different results in certain regions and some not being relevant whatsoever. For this revision of the tier list, we have tweaked how votes are counted. We will still be using a ballot system; however, you are not limited with the amount of tiers you would like to use. Want to have 5 tiers? Go ahead. How about numbering everyone from 1-58? No problem. We strongly recommend using Quetzle's Tier List Maker to assist with your tier list creation, as it allows you to customize the amount of tiers and has a rather easy to use interface. In addition, Smashboards has a Tier List Maker as well.

Please note, if you are putting each of your characters in individual votes (1-55), please prompt that you are doing so; otherwise, we will assume you are making your vote in a standard tier list form.

As a quick meta-game recap to start the thread, here is the current combined results and usage data for major tournaments, controlling for a few factors: (strictly ordered within tiers)








That is the reality we live in - who is actually attending and winning events. Now, a tier list isn't strictly a results list, but in my opinion your vote must include an explanation of any case where you think your perspective is more accurate than reality.

Think Marth and Mac are much lower, and that all those players winning with them are going to stop? Awesome, I look forward to hearing why. Predictions about the future are the reason we're all here, but let's hold ourselves to a high bar of input quality.



In which event, here's my vote. Tiers are strictly ordered (and can be considered votes 1-55), because I'm dumb and not afraid to be wrong. (I can format it differently as needed)








Miis are impossible to responsibly tier because no one plays them.

I'll defend my deviations in yonder discussion thread. See you there!

Comments:

This list IS ORDERED within tiers. This is also not my final draft, but if I haven't updated by deadline, consider it so.

I left out the Miis because of lack of standardized rules.

I also left off Lucina because I cannot for the life of me figure out where to place her. I don't think there's a reason to play her over Marth, she doesn't have any real results to speak of, but at the same time when you compare her with Marth it feels wrong to separate them by an entire tier. I'd label her 'competitively obsolete' and I can't decide where I want her.

Diddy, Sheik, Mario - I think Diddy is the clear best character based on results. The sheer number of Diddy Kong players that frequently place top 16 is the primary reason I think this. My other contenders for this spot were Sheik and Mario. I think Mario is more a matter of two extremely strong stand-out players (Ally and Anti), as you don't see other Mario mains replicating that success to near the same degree. Sheik I think is held back some by her lack of super reliable kill confirms, and her results are a bit more lacking than Diddy's.

Cloud - I think Cloud's results justify him having a lower position than I placed him, but from a standpoint of character quality I just can't see myself placing him lower than 3rd.

I may come back to this later with some further refinements, but I wanted to at least post my first draft.
