Wow, I didn't know vxg sponsored smash tournaments. I used to be part of the Soul Calibur 2 community back in the day. Spent hours daily at the town center arcade, skipping class, and spending about $5 bucks while Mike and Felix used a couple quarters. Those were the good ol'days. I'm good friend of Mike and he told me all about the tourny and how he owned in St.Martin. I'm glad notice has been taken of the smash community. I wasn't top tier in SC nor in Smash, but there are some excellent smash players down here and believe me, vxg is an excellent opportunity.

vxg_gizmo, if you're interested in other gamers, we here at the UPR recinto de Mayaguez formed a club a little over a year ago to gather as much gamers from el RUM and around the island. I used to be VP of the gamer's guild, as we affectionally call it, which sponsored last year's Rum and Smash as well as tomorrows Rum and Smash 2. Of course, this is also thanks to all the help around the island from other non-UPR smash players. If you're looking for smashers and happen to be around el area oeste, I recommend you head to Mayaguez's Town Center arcade, or even stop at el RUM and have a chat with the members. Wow this is great... looks like i found a good central point where gamers of all type reside? Although my colleagues prefer to stay in San Juan, i ussually stay in the east (i love the aguadilla water park: Cascadas), so i will defintely check out Mayaguez when i come on APril 23rd to meet the gamers there. I have a couple questions for you though:

What is the UPR Recinto?
What exactly is RUM (i thought you guys literally meant Rum(alcohol) and Smash)?
Have members of that gamers guild travelled for comeptiton before? Would they want to come to VxG?

RUM is Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez. It’s the name of the university. UPR is University of Puerto Rico. There are several of them located all over PR, and RUM is the name of the Mayaguez branch.

There have been a few GG members that have traveled to the states to compete, but for other games. I am the only one here that has competed in the states for Smash. I’m not sure but I believe one other person has went to Florida a while back as well.

Traveling is a problem for most of us, though, especially me. I would like to go to St. Maarten to compete, but my worry is the cost...of everything. The plane trip, staying expensives, participation fees for tournaments, etc.

Another worry is the tournament format. You should know that most 3rd-party tournament organizers have a basic idea of how to organize rulesets for games like Street Fighter and Soul Calibur, but they haven’t a clue how to make a balanced ruleset for Smash. Smash requires very specific things and the most widely known and accepted ruleset used throughout the world by the Smash community is the MLG ruleset. MLG is Major League Gaming in case you don’t know about them. They’re a company looking to promote game competitions as a sport and gamers as professionals, like the NBA. Their site is www.mlgpro.com. There are many places where Smash tournaments are held, but by people who know nothing about competitive Smash and often times the ruleset turns out to be very poor.

So if you plan to hold Smash tournaments, I would advise you to use the MLG ruleset and do things the right way: according to how the community here at SWF does them. Competitive Smash requires a lot of specifics, which I’m sure we’ll be able to discuss once you meet us in April.

Also I notice that in your games list you have Smash under “other” instead of fighting. Smash is a fighting game, so it would be a good idea to list it with the other fighters.

Sorry about not being so clear. It's a play on words really. As HDL said, it's Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez, but since PR's also known for it's Rum (alcohol), specially in Mayaguez where drinking is almost a sport, it seemed like a good idea. HDL pretty much answered everything else.

Definitely, we've also got a good 2D fighting community at el RUM. I'm sure they'll be interested. In fact, the Guild held an Open Fist tournament last week in 2D fighting (which included 3rd Strike, MvC2, and Guilty Gear) and, although I didn't attend, I heard it went pretty well.

Most smashers live in the West, in places like Mayaguez and Isabella, but there are groups on the East, such as Bayamon and San Juan, sadly, on the center, which is where I hail from, there aren't many smashers.

Well the tournament was great.I got my *** handed to me in both teams and singles but I guess it's due to not being able to work good under stress. I won a lot of friendlies but oh well, I had fun.
I'd love to talk more about the tournament but i'm really tired, so I'll just edit this post later on with more content or just post again if someone posts after me ( which I'm pretty sure will happen)

Although I got my *** kicked hard in the first round by Evil's falco(which I officially now hate) and then lost in the loser's bracket to a luigi, but I still had fun. Although I won a few friendlies, I still lost badly in the tournament. But hey, it's the first tournament I've ever been to. I'm looking forward to go to other tourneys.

Ok guys its time for some serious business. The tournament was a great one with probably the most exciting matches we've seen so far but, At the end of the day HDL's copy of smash was missing.

I do not care if it was an accident or a practical joke but I want it returned. Also somebody took Doval's controller. I want these items returned as soon as possible. I honestly do not give a flying **** on who did it but this BS will not be tolerated.

Isn't there any security concerning any hardware/software? it seems someone has a grudge against HDL for winning the tournament, maybe it was any locals there or someone took them by accident, maybe.

I highly doubt it was an accident. My cube is labeled, which means whoever took it did it on purpose because they knew it was mine. Everyone knows whether they brought a cube/disc and where it’s at anyway, so it was definitely on purpose.

So I’d like to say here for the one that has sticky fingers and may possibly read this. Don’t think there will be no measures taken against this. I bring my cube and game to contribute to the event and for other people to have fun, and someone has to go and do something like this. I’m going to say this only once. If you have my disc and return it to me in the same condition, I will let this slide. If you do not then things will be changing. People will have to be searched and other security measures may be taking place. No one’s going to feel safe anymore contributing to these events because of *******es that want to take what’s not theirs. Then you know what? No more tournaments, because then everyone’s **** would be stolen. Stealing is illegal. And when you cause illegalities, well you know what happens next.

I feel good çause I was able to do the infinite to a sheik(I don't remember who was it) and I fought well vs. HDL. Doji, I wasn't able to fight you but we'll meet again sometime.

Armando's controler has been found. It seems somebody put the controller by mistake in Vain's stuff. Vain already told me he has it.About the disc I just hope it appears it's not right to steal and even worse when HDL's trusts the community with his Gamecube , etc.

Vain, I noticed that i was mentioned always as Mario, if you guys remember correctly i also took out my Bowser for a spin specifically in the team matches and twice in the singles. Also, PLEASE post the videos because I don't want them to be missing in action like the isabela event.

I don’t think people were accusing you. At least Max wasn’t, because I was right next to him when he called you. The thing is you and other guys from the east had already left so we couldn’t ask you in person. Everyone was asked not just you, so don’t feel like it’s a personal attack. But I don’t know if anyone else called you and made assumptions. Anyway please keep an eye out if you learn anything. Otherwise next thing you know someone’s laptop just up and disappeared.

Forgive me if I sounded accusing at all, Joe%, but I wanted to get things clear from you as soon as possible. I hope I havent lost your trust, since I trusted the answer that you gave me.

OK now for a lighter and sexier note, I believe this tournament was a smashing success. I used the program to divide the participants by location so that almost nobody got to fight somebody from the same place.

I remember how nobody said a word when we arrived at the locale, because honestly the place reminded me of a small jail.... However on the inside it was quite spacious and nice all around.

It was a shame not every match could be recorded. Especially Eval vs. B4k4. I must say it was only a first or second round match but the atmosphere felt like it was finals already.

Zyko, Im glad you could finally make it. You know, I would joke around that you were never coming to a tournament, but Im glad you proved me wrong . Your fox has good **** going on man. All you need is some local competition to keep you polished against human opponents. You find that and you'll be a top competitor in no time.

Joe%: You caught me by suprise this time around. Im sorry we couldn't have our batch of friendlies ( actually i think I only played once our twice with a couple of you since I was so busy). But I saw you play and indeed saw that you were quite interested on competitive smash. Next time we meet, I'll give you some Ganon 1 on 1.

I dont know if that Melvo kid comes to swf, but I must say that was one nice Marth.

EOTG, man you are the Mario to look up to and a sweet Bowser too. Were you trying to do the Flame Glitch with Bowser? I understand that glitch is non-existant in version 2 but if you tell me beforehand, Ill arrange your matches on a version 1 in the future so you can fight Bowser with his fullest potential. Same goes to the other low tier players such as Doji and HHH who use characters affected by version 2.

That Yuca person owned me all around on our only friendly but I somehow managed to beat him by the hair of my teeth. You've improved so much in just the span of a month its just fear inducing.

If this keeps up, East Side can stick it hard to West if the crew battle happens next time around.

Oh, and btw the best moment was watching Doji iron the R&S2 t-shirts with a mad alcohol buzz, Cheers mate.

The tournament was awesome, it really was a success. It kinda sucked for me with all the T-shirt problems we had I had to put most of my time into working the T-shirt stuff than in the tournament, but in the end I was a bigger success than Rum & Smash 1, lets just wait for the third. and YES there will also be T-shirts for that one and I they will be just as sweet or even better than these ones.
Zyko OMG man I know I saw you there, I really wanted to fight you, I think you where in the same TV as Pope and I went there but then Damian called for registrations and you had to leave, then i kninda forgot about it, They told me you have a good Fox. BTW you areout of the list of the people we will have to do the tournament on their backyards. Wolf Urameshi and Bubbleman beware, we might just pop out in you house and make a tournament in your backyard so you cana finally assist to one.
