Not really since Sakurai has been putting a good number of lesser known or less popular characters over the really known or extremely popular ones since Smash 4. 64, Melee, and Brawl were pretty much nothing but Nintendo's heaviest hitters while Smash 4 was when the more obscure or lesser popular characters started to get in like Robin, Lucina, Shulk, Corrin, ect. Not to say those characters weren't popular, but there were and still are a ton of characters that are way more popular than them that still hasn't made it in yet.

Makes me wonder if he hadn't thought of a good enough moveset for the latest retro character addition and decided to compromise for something from a more well-known series.

Well, that and it was the year where every new big Mario spin-off promoted their armless enemies as playable.

I just find :ultpiranha:kind of annoying considering he was put into Smash for shock value alone. He's one of the the few current Smash characters I dislike.

I mean, just look at the potential for characters like Ayumi and Mach Rider:

I'm sure Sakurai isn't out of moveset ideas for Retro characters for this game.

I'm just saying, inspiration has to come naturally for him, only caveat is that movesets tend to lean more towards series faithfulness these days (though with the occasional concessions like :ultrosalina:). Besides, we don't know how much more third-parties are coming before we get back into the first-party well again.

Hell, you can make a moveset for Pauline just by using the Minis from Mario vs Donkey Kong and the collectables from the DK arcade.

Basically you can make a moveset for basically any character.

I mean, if Sakurai really wants a character, he can make any moveset for them with all of the tools or references from said newcomer's games.

And I still hate it and don't find it funny.

Here was my moveset for Ayumi a whole back:

B : Flashlight; Ayumi shines a flashlight for a split second, briefly stunning fighters in a moderate area
B + Forwards : Sun Rays; Ayumi slowly walks forward and holds up a magnifying glass to use an angled ray of sunlight; the attack does more damage in stages that take place during the day
B + Up : Umbrella; Ayumi mervously opens her umbrella and gently floats down; unlike the parasols of :ultpeach::ultdaisy:, Ayumi's only hits once and:
  • It primarily takes Ayumi down slowly
  • It only really moves in one direction; tilting the control stick in the opposite direction simply slows it down
B + Down : Inspect; Ayumi looks down upon the ground with her magnifying glass, in which case there's a 50/50 chance she'll get an item
Final Smash: Case Closed; Ayumi glares at up to three opponents in front of her. Any that are within her vision radius are taken into a cutscene emulating the games where Ayumi deduces all three of the opponents as the perpetrators, sending them all flying away. If any of the opponents have an item, the attack deals 5% more damage.

Just, out of ALL the characters. Waluigi, Geno, Shadow, Tails, Knuckles, everything, Sakurai went with a PLANT.

Heck; just recently, I made a moveset for Koopa Troopa of all characters.

B : Shell Charge; by holding B, Koopa Troopa charges a powerful shell slide that causes him to fall off ledges (18%, medium knockback)
B + Forwards : Shell Slide; Koopa Troopa tucks into his shell and slides along the ground, immediately stopping at a ledge (8% per hit, OK knockback); the player can turn him in the opposite direction after stopping at a ledge
B + Up : Paratroopa Wings; Koopa Troopa becomes a Paratroopa for 5 seconds, fluttering higher and higher by constantly pressing B
B + Down : Trip Over; Koopa Troopa pretends to wiggle on the ground when B is held, then trips opponents in an area when B is let go (5%)

Final Smash: Spiny Shell; Koopa Troopa turns his shell blue and grows spikes and wings. He then flies up to the top of the screen, tucked in his shell. The player can control his left and right movement, but he slowly floats towards the fighter in 1st or second place. After 5 seconds, he crashes down and causes a massive explosion (38%, far knockback)

DrCoeloCephalo DrCoeloCephalo well I find it funny:

:4pacman:

Jokes aside, I'm okay with Plant. Would prefer Shy Guy or Kamek over him though in regards to the normal Mario enemies.

plant would have worked, but his kit is just so utterly unfun, it's like he was only put in there just because of the shock value

it sucks

I think his kit is just fine. It could have turned out a lot worse than what we got.

I remember that day of the final direct where everyone was fuming over Ken, Incineroar, the grinch leak being fake, and Spirits being a massive letdown/"deconfirmation bomb", and then the plant showed up and everyone was like: "What in the actual ****..?" Andre the Black Nerd had one of the funniest reactions I've ever seen to a smash reveal, coming close to Etika's level when the plant was revealed. His kit feels weird at first, but it's hella fun.

I think everyone would have been less salty about the November Direct had the Grinch Leak never been a thing. I swear, that troll who made that leak had the biggest laugh in Whosville that day.
