lol invisi putting your hand up for stuff doesnt automatically mean you're playing it. xD

anyway the way bonus games is going to work is we just see what the situation is like at the time and make a decision on the spot about what is played and by who. the reason why is, a) there probably won't be time for every bonus game, b) the bonus games are meant to be more of a social thing where everyone chills and has a go and laughs at eachother and stuff, c) it's bad logistics to assign extra players to bonus games because of A. assigning main game players to bonus games is ok because they are already guaranteed playtime at the event anyway, but tbh I would like to avoid even that unless the person is -really- good at the game (tbh this philosophy has been indirectly applied to the main games too, two of the main games will be shared runs and the other two run by people who actually speedrun the game in their own time not just for the marathon).

all the people ive spoken to who have actually been at the previous marathons agree that chillax/flexible is definitely the way to go for the bonus stuff. some of the most fun times at previous marathons has been from chill play (first year twilight princess is a fantastic example).

anyway i'm not saying you can't play, just that you shouldn't go in there expecting to have a whole game to yourself. of course, if you want to practice beforehand you'll have a greater opportunity to play when the time comes. for the record, ss will probably be prioritized because its zelda, and anything n64 will be run on the ntsc versions (capture card woes, but anyway, be wary cause they play differently than pal, i recommend emulator+controller adaptor when practicing).

tl;dr bonus games are epic funtimes for all not just one person

hmm yeeeaaaahh.....I cant see banjo being played

it will most likely be chosen on the day to be honest

@scabe
dont use Pinnacle Studio, use AmaRecTV. you can find a download link from the SpeedRunsLive tools page.
it should work with your dazzle which is a pretty good actually

also you should totally come to the marathon
Oooh this is interesting. Don't know if I can be bothered to learn something new and set it all up but I think I'll definitely consider trying it out.

A small update. I didn't have a fresh hero mode file ready for speedrunning, so I've spent the week playing through on normal, which I just finished today. I also watched one of testrunner's streams, and practiced the glitches to see what I could get down. The final play time on the file was 11:30, so when you take out cutscenes and consider that future runs will probably improve, I should easily be able to do a sub-10 run. We'll just have to wait and see how much I can improve by January.

The only glitches I didn't pull off were the Ancient Cistern skip and Early Thunderhead. I might do some more research onto how they work, but from what I've seen the Ancient Cistern skip may not even work on my version (just a standard PAL verson I bought from EB on the day of release).

On a slightly different note, I seem to remember a post somewhere that this is a charity event. Is that true, or am I just imagining things? If it is, which charity is it, and how will people donate? If it's not then just ignore this part of the post.

EDIT: Yep, looks like the Ancient Cistern skip is indeed not going to work on my disc. I did notice a difference in terrain in my attempt to perform the glitch compared to what was on the stream, and checking disc version confirmed that it won't work.

it is a charity event, we will be contributing to child's play. later on i'll have a webpage up with embedded stream/chat, information about the event/charity, and a donation widget.

btw, we will run usa 1.0 ss at the event so make sure anything you practice will work on that version. also keep in mind what i said in the post earlier about bonus games.

side note: might have to cut non-vc n64 stuff from the lineup, having capture problems that i may or may not be able to figure out. though there is always emulator i guess.

Well make sure you give the link out before the event. I plan to spam facebook since a lot of my friends would be interested, and I'll make sure to put the donation link in there.

On a related note, I did a full run today (I had no idea how exhausting it would be!); the final time was 9:30. Of that, 30 mins was spent learning early thunderhead which I hadn't done before, and there were a few other sections I got stuck on for way too long, so I could probably shave off another 30-60 mins.

Just about everything I'm doing I picked up from Testrunner's stream, who runs US 1.0, so it should all work.

That's single session right?

I have no idea how you can play video games for over nine hours straight lol.

I think the most I've done was 4-5 hours, and that was playing WoW whilst Skyping with my cousin, and WoW is far less intense than a speedrun.

I don't make it though a full tournament without a nap anyway. To be honest, nine hours of straight gaming really did my head in. I held up alright for most of the run, but then, less than an hour before the end, my shield went from full to broken in a really short time and I just snapped. I managed to keep playing through sheer will, but I was really pissed off for the rest of the run. Once it was finished, I just wanted to go to bed; I was so exhausted.

So basically, it can be done, but I wouldn't advise you do it too often. lol.

That's not 9 hours straight though, you have breaks between matches. In fact I sometimes just sit back and watch when I could get potential friendlies just to relax my mind.

Invisi- That sounds incredibly stressful. Are speedruns actually fun during the playthrough? It seems like with all that stress and with so much on the line if you make one mistake, the 'fun' would only come at the end when you finish and realise what you've achieved.

To be honest, I found the opposite. I've had a lot of fun learning these tricks, and pulling them off. I wasn't really stressed because I wasn't racing against a clock, I was just trying to see what I could do. That said, the feeling of achievement at the end really didn't come, simply because the exhaustion of 9 hours had set in, and one annoying thing (the shield break) was enough to put me in a bad mood.

yeah ss is a long game to run, once you get pretty good youll have shaved off a couple hours though haha. honestly though i find tournaments are a lot more physically draining than speedruns. you might not think it cause you dont play every minute you're at a tournament, but that's just my experience.

i think tourneys would be more draining than a speedrun because, even though you are getting time to rest between matches, you have to think more during a fight but for a speedrun a lot of it can just become muscle memory, no need to think about it or focus on an opponents movements and react. I find smash more mentally demanding than doing a speedrun of WW and at the moment my WW time is about 7.5hrs ( which is pathetic really)

whats the problem you are having?
is that you cant get colour picture on the cpu when using composite cable into the the roxio?
thats the problem i am having at the moment with recording from the gamecube, i think the solution is to buy the GC component cables, but they are rediculously expensive these days.
although i think there exists an S-video to component adapter in which case getting the GC s-video cable and one of these adapters would mean we could plug it into the roxio and hopefully be a cheaper solution.

why would you ever expect the roxio to be able to take composite in the first place? it's a completely different standard to what the device accepts...

anyway it's not a roxio-related problem. trying to get another device to accept ntsc n64 s-video.

Oh tournaments, I used to have a 1hr nap or so inbetween doubles and singles, good times.

And EA, what device are you using to record your stream?

*gords post*

we are going to use a Roxio GameCAP to capture the gameplay and a Logitech HD webcam for the camera or us. using Xsplit to broadcast it on twitch, probably on EA's twitch channel.

Tournaments were all autopilot for me anyway.

Snowboarding to the Yeti's house on the other hand, can go die in a red hot blaze of my fury.

Also completely unrelated, yes, I'm here til Mid March, staying in Kobe/Osaka area. If you're in the area hit me up on Steam I guess dude!

Hey EA, what do you reckon the chances are of SS happening? I know it's not a main event this year, but I do remember you posting somewhere that it would probably take precedence over the other, non-Zelda games. I'm really keen, and would really like to do a run if we get time. Please take that into account =)

EDIT: Re-read the post to refresh myself on what you actually said. So I gather that SS will probably happen, but I may not get the game to myself, depending on how everyone feels on the day? I suppose that's fair enough, though if you guys will let me I'd probably prefer to do the full run on my own and see how I do, considering I've been practicing it. I guess we'll just see how everyone feels on the weekend and discuss it then.

You'll have enough time. Last time when I ran SS in about 9 and a half hours we had many many hours to spare still. This was after Ted *basically* did Twilight Princess twice.

What's with the lack of enthusiasm over SS this year EA?

As far as I can tell, they're more interested in Four Swords Adventure. But I'd imagine we should have time for both.

PS. I'm probably completely wrong.

mainly, noone showed interest in dedicating themselves to it until really late. also, this marathon was originally meant to be for the original 4 3d zeldas. it's kinda of expanded since then since we all started cutting huge time off the games, but that is still the focus. maybe one day we can manage every zelda in 48 hours lol.

anyway you got the right idea with how ss/fsa will work. merry christmas.

So, my brother and I decided to make a last minute decision to extract the wii from the cupboard to take up to our grandparents' place. Took a while to do, but was well worth it.

I managed to get a full run down while I was there. Unfortunately, it was not a single sitting, and I wasn't timing any of it. However, I made no major, costly mistakes, so if you guys are willing to let me do a full SS run, I reckon I could get it done in about 8 hours, give or take half an hour.

A few quick questions about the logistics of the weekend so I have more info for myself, as well as info to pass on to my friends who are interested in watching.

I assume the stream will take place on EA's twitch channel, is that correct? If not, please link me to where the stream will take place so I can pass on the link.
Could I also get the donation link to pass on? And some basic info about the charity we're supporting would also be nice to be able to pass on.
What time do we plan to start? Friday afternoon/midnight/Saturday morning?

That's all I can think of for now.

OK guys so my new apartment is a lot smaller than the previous apartment. but still bigger than teds place. so

here is the list of attendees I will be permitting.
Nathaniel - organizer and OoT/MM
Me - host and TWW
Tom - MM
Ted - pro TP
Escro - apprentice TP
Invisi - amateur SS
Scoot - SS veteran

(cheese said he might stop by but i havent heard from him in a while so I am not sure)

I can have this list assuming not all of us want to sleep at once. I have a smaller bedroom but a double bed now, so 2 people can sleep on the bed and 2-3 people on the floor. The bedroom will be for sleeping and the main room will be for playing.

Also, if anyone has a GBA please bring it, I have the GBA/GC links and batteries for the original. EA bring your one anyway maybe my charger can help. I should have a streaming TV and 3 others for practice. Bring your consoles.

Everyone on the above list should get here on friday evening, we can have dinner then get preped for the events ahead.
Also from what i gather the plan will follow the games in release order, most likely starting friday at midnight.

1st - Nathaniel running OoT
( 3-5hrs, taking into account he has a high chance of erasing his file midway through and having to start over)

2nd - Tom/Nathaniel running MM
( 3-5hrs, taking into account that Tom has a high chance of making the game unplayable and having to start over, then quabling over routes with EA)

3rd - Me running TWW
( 7-9hrs, taking into account numerous crashes and a horrible Wind Temple/triforce collection sequence)

4th - Escro/Ted running TP
( 5-6hrs, taking into account escro playing for about 2hrs then ted finishing the other 90% of the game in about 3hrs)

this should leave us with about 23hrs to play 4 swords and SS.

Invisi,

we will be streaming it on Nathaniels channel, and maybe on mine as well.
Nathaniel is trying to get a website up in time , info on the charity and how to donate will be on there.

Lol gords.

Good post.
Agreed. I got a good laugh out of it.

Let me know when the website is up so I can link it to my friends. Looking forward to the weekend! =)

EDIT: Obviously I'm bad at reading - Friday night it is. I'm not sure if I'll be there in time to have dinner though. If I rush, I still wouldn't be there before 8pm. 9 is probably a better estimate.

I'll see if I can find my GBA + GBA/GC cable. I know I have at least one of each somewhere in the cupboard. I'll also bring as many spare sleeping bags/mats as I can find around the house, since I know we have several. I'll probably need to have dinner at home on Friday too, since I'll be there later than you guys.

I just looked up who Child's Play are, and what they do; I hadn't realised we'd picked such a fitting charity. And I know from personal experience how much difference they could make to a child's hospital experience, so I'm very happy to be supporting them.

I'm confirmed for not coming to this, much to my disappointment. I'm having some problems with bleeding everywhere and the USSR. Sorry guys.
