Hey all, I'm looking to get back into yugioh. I don't have any cards now and haven't played in 7-8 years though. Is there any advice you guys could give me to get back up to speed? Any particular decks that might be good (and not overly expensive) to start off with? Any particular structure decks or anything I should pick up? I had a great understanding of the game back in the day but since it's been so long I'm really not sure where to begin now.
play on duelingnetwork.com first so you have a current understanding of the meta and what builds are popular

Understanding the Meta on Dueling Network?

I'd suggest finding a local to go to and getting used to that meta instead, and forming a group of reliable friends to play it with. Are you still in Pitt, Engel? We've got a fairly competitive scene. Greentree Sports Cards has weird hours, but it's got a pretty big showing during it's hours.

Yeah I'm still around, just been busy with work. Guess I'll have to find time to make a smash Friday or something so you guys can coach me up haha.

I don't really go to Duq/Smash Fridays much anymore. You might be able to find Lake/Aaron at them and catch some info off of him, but all of his decks are at my house, haha.

Greentree is probably the closest place you'll find near you. Mr. Nice Guys is a bit north of Pittsburgh, but the shop owner is a pretty good guy. I go to the Clearview Mall New Dimension Comics in Butler every Wednesday/Saturday if you're anywhere near there. There's also a New Dimension Comics in The Pittsburgh Mills run by one of my friends, but I don't know how active their scene is.

So guys, I'm wanting to test out my burn deck on some top-tier decks. If anyone's wanting, I'm willing to play whenever. I really like this deck right now and I've not lost a set yet with it. I want to see what can beat me so I can prepare something to work against that.

Omg, I didn't know a thread for Yugioh existed. Basically, I want to start playing again but I forgot how to play and all the cards I have are extremely old.

Buy any of the new Starter or Structure decks that have come within the past year. They all contain amazing cards and an updated rulebook.

I went to the abyss rising sneak peak today and took 1st, got my mat. But I pulled gaaarbaage. It's really frustrating that I've been wanting to play mermails ever since they came out (even back when people thought they were bad), but konami trolled the rarities so hard that it's going to be one of, if not the most expensive deck. I'm ALREADY seeing people misplaying with bad (both because it's a sneak peak and because they have no idea how to play/build them) mermail builds. One of the most frustrating things ever. Some dude tried to use Abysscale - Kraken to negate and destroy a card, then when I told him that's not how it even worked, he wanted to take back Abysscale's effect, and he didn't even know that the card is freaking mandatory.

Honestly screw mermails for being the deck I want but cannot get. Now I'm going to have to make some crazy Slushy deck or just an Atlantean deck of some sort.

More like beatdown, but yeah close enough. DDT is really bad though, you don't want to miss a fishborg early on, and you have to do a combo play to get at best a snowdust dragon out, which is just going to get bull blader'd or memory of an adversary'd or mind pollutant'd or mecha poseidra'd.

Abyss Warrior is the card that was really busted.

On DN. I don't have enough money for a new meta deck, so I just stick with my Mystic Swordsman/warrior deck from 5 years ago. It was pretty good in its day. Anywho, I also think I have a deck I'd like Pinkreaper to try out sometime on his channel :)

I'm talking actual fish, not any of this new age junk.

So, those are my 3 decks I currently run (although I plan on rebuilding my Inzektors sometime soon). For reference on how to critique, my most common opponent mains Dark Worlds and also runs Six Sams, Atlanteans (whatever set just came out, he uses that. Only played it once or twice and had to proxy, beat him each time), and Crystal Beasts.

My most common loss is my Lightsworns against his Dark Worlds because since I run just a heavy storm and no MST, Skill Drain kills me each time. I need to tech in some MST, but I'm not sure where.

Oh my bad vyke I coulda sworn you were talking about sneak peak format. Yeah FishTK swag etc. And yeah remora gon be crazy you're totally right.

GW, I've never known lightsworns to run traps, though I'm really not a LS player. But regardless, in this format, most everybody has switched over to using a lot of handtraps. Tragoedia, Effect Veiler, and Maxx C, try to fit something from those in if you can? I don't like orihalcos but it's cool you're testing it. Just know that it's going to make your Gorz extremely dead. That's all I really know about LS.

No comment on evols, again not something I know of. For the junk-doppel plants, all I can tell you is that you probably want more than 1 MST.

As someone that plays Evols all the time, I can tell you that there are really only ~7 good Evoltile and Evolsaur monsters, of course, if this is for IRL I do know that the good ones kind of cost money. Good monsters and why:

Evoltiles:

Westlo - The bread and butter, should be at 3.
Najasho - Hilariously powerful with Evo-Force, good with Enemy Controller (which should be in, especially if you have Casino) This can go to three, especially if you want to run trib
Casinerio - A quick one-for-two if you can kill something, shouldn't be run past one, can be left out.
Odonto - A very iffy card. Best used should you draw Vulcano. I like having one for such occasions.

Evolsaurs

Cerato - 2100 when special summoned AND searches when it kills something. Has 1900 to crash with pesky Thunder Kings. Definitely goes at three.
Diplo - S/T destruction with backrow crazy decks running around is good. 1600 attack, is not. I like to keep it at 2.
Vulcano - An amazing effect that nets you a rank four when successful, however, at 1200 it is often a bad idea to run more than 2. 1 is okay, but having 2 gives you its ability twice.

I only suggest against the 5+ guys because they're even slower than Evols already are, and it gives you more room for the great Rank 4s that exist. I can tell you now that Force should be at 3 (it's so good, why wouldn't it be at 3?) I'd suggest at least trying out E-con (especially if you plan on using Casino) but I can tell you it's pretty great. Forbidden lance is also nice as it'll protect Evolzars from harmful spells/traps AND make big monsters weaker.

Thanks for the advice, I'll work on that. It's hard to find someone else who plays Evols, so it's hard to get advice.

I have a friend who plays Evols and has built them a lot of different ways. I'll talk to him sometime about it and get word back to you.

Yo jump, Treeborn is def a good card but only if you're running some support to put it in the grave. With just treeborn you're really just hoping for a Ryko Mill to make it work(Level Eater at least becomes instantly live if you ditch it with Quickdraw)

If you're not playing Foolish or Swap Frog you'd be better off just not running Treeborn. I'd run another MST or a Tuning over it if i were you.

Man, Tuning is like 4,000 dollars. I did buy a Spore on Amazon for like 1 dollar, so I'm gonna tech that in for Treeborn I think.

Fire Kings are pretty good but I think a lot of people are overhyping them. I think they'll be good enough to make people start dropping torrential though lmao. I think that Compulse is the new trap of choice for the format. Chainability, versatility, and the ability to take out threats already out like TKing is too important for a lot of decks.

I haven't played Yu Gi Oh since high school, which was MANY years ago. My favorite card back then was Thousand-Eyes Restrict

Kind of similar to Ditto being my favorite pokemon card back in the day

My favorite strategy seems to be letting the opponent destroy themselves

There's ways to get around anything. But I think this part of the effect is what killed it: "Other monsters cannot change their battle position or attack."

With that and the whole equipping thing, you're free to do what you want. And if you just want to get rid of the monsters on your opponents side of the field, you can either just grab the strongest one and attack them all or grab a weaker one that's protected some other way and crash it.

The only way to kill it is to veiler it and successfully attack it next turn or destroy it via card effect.

Sure, it's doable, but I think Konami judges things on the basis of "Can a deck reasonably be expected to deal with this?" If it turns out most decks can't deal with something like this reasonably, then that may be how it gets banned.

There are plenty of ways around Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of The End as well. That isn't the point.

Usually anything that hits the ban list is because it's too efficient at what it does for very little risk or cost, or has some broke *** combo with another card (such as with Butterfly Dagger - Elma and Gearfried the Iron Knight.)
