So I have always been wondering how everyone's first tournament was. I never went to a melee tournament until I got back into the game in spring 2011. My first tournament was KTAR6 the first ktar to have melee as a side event. At first I saw a set up and started playing some friendlies. Most of my friendlies were against a falco player who i didn't know was good or not. After playing friendlies with him another person came along and we had it so winner kept playing. The other person was also a falco player who was 3 stocking me just like the falco player before him. After these friendlies i was convinced that I wouldn't enter this tourny since I felt my chances seemed slim since these two players were beating me and one of the few players I knew of M2K was there. I later found out the 2 falco players beating me were StricNYN the first person I played and ZHU. So thats it for my first tournament will be happy to hear other peoples first tourny experiences.

Youre lucky to have been ***** by players of high calibur.
I was super nervous during my first real tourney. I lost 1-2 first round, but I was more than happy knowing i took a match :)

After that I played lots of friendlies and tried to get many tips on how to improve. I like to think that tourney jitters dont affect me as much now.

the first tourney i went to was don't choke in march

it's been a while so i don't remember it TOO well but i remember playing a handful of people around my skill level and me and a friend taking turns being destroyed in friendlies by colbol (he went like 5 different characters that weren't fox) and playing a ganon main (spider_sense i think) and he was 3 stocking me while having a conversation with this one other dude. i also remember seeing dashizwiz wrecking people with fox in 1$ moneymatches. it was crazy

didn't end up entering the tourney but had loads of fun.

My first tournament was BEAST 1 in January.

Got destroyed by Amsah in pools, which felt awesome. Then he wanted to play a couple of friendlies, which felt even more awesome. The fact that I was spending most of my time getting tossed around only made me more hyped.

Did better than I had expected in pools and won 2 sets.

Didn't play quite as many friendlies/against as many players as I may have wanted to, but I was sleep deprived and didn't know anyone there (some of my friends were supposed to come with me, but they bailed out last minute). Didn't really mind, though, because I got to play a lot against a few players that were around my level.

Overall a very fun and memorable experience, especially since my improvement rate started to skyrocket afterwards.

my first tourny was @ Connecticonn 2008, i really don't remember how it went (I did poorly i guess).

The first real tourny i went to was a mass madness in '09, been going on and off ever since, been to one national.

I don't seem to do good at tournies if there's pools tho :/

My first Real tournament was actually Revival of Melee 2....I was attempting to be a techskill-less fox Main. I was nervous and very excited...I came very close to making it past round 1 but I lost on a technicality. the other person 2-0'd someone that I 2-1'd...yea. Still I played a few friendlies I got 4stocked by Hbox and decided Fox wasn't for me. I won 5/7 MM's with My alt and I've been a Marth Main ever since...good times.

I haven't been to a tourney yet...I'm hoping to at the end of my 2nd semester. I'll probably go to some Toronto tournies or some ****. I'll have to save up some cash as well.

My first tourney was STYC 1, july 19th, 2010.

It was so cool to play lots of new people in a single day.
I thought I was gonna do really bad, because the only people I've been playing with were my one of my friend nicknamed SSF, and with PKMvodka and Bam.

Since PKM and Bam are top players in my region, me and my friend were just getting destroyed all the time, this lead me to think I wouldn't even get out of pools.

I quickly realized I wasn't too bad since I was playing friendlies with a lot of new people, and I could beat them kinda easily even with my secondaries. At this point I understood how good pros really are.

Turned out I got 2nd seed in my pool, behind PKM. First and 2nd round of brackets were really easy. Then met Kage in Winner's R3 and he destroyed me, oh god it was funny. Then in loser's I don't remember much but I later lost to a Samus player and finished 5th in brackets.

This tournament motivated me to improve a lot.

My first tournament was ECSS2. I remember that one of the first friendlies I did, I was four stocked by a roy player. I was dumbfounded at that. I didn't even make it past the first round. It motivated me to get better though. :p

My first tournament was at a kumoricon, in 06, I placed 2nd out of ten I believe. in my second and third tournaments I also placed 2nd, those were locals though.

My first tournament with serious smashers though...That was horrible, I did awful, got nervous, screwed up and went home with my head hanging.

Cool Thread. Looking forward to read more stories bout everyones first tournament.

My first tourney was back in 06 called X-TC3 in Europe, Holland.
I was aware that the best player we had was called Amsah. The only thing I knew about his looks was that he was black.
So after an hour since I got there 2 black dudes entered the room.
One with short hair ( Adam )
The other with these loooooooooooooooong rasta hair ( Amsah )
I didnt realised that he was the dutch finest ofcourse.
Followed by them ****** everyone in the building.
In tournament I got 3 and 4stocked, 2-0ed, by Remen. I liked it

My first tournament was STIIG, a Swedish chillfest. It's a week-long vacation for smashers.

Things were awesome. I got to meet people from all over Sweden, I played lots of folks and me and my teammate almost took a game out of Calle W+GsE in pools :D Mostly though, it was such a relaxed atmosphere. We had loud music in the background and a few songs became smash memes.
Good times.

To set the scene: I had done some smaller local tournaments in high school/college (which I usually got 1st or 2nd in) and I had been on a 18 month smash hiatus in college (involuntarily, people start refusing to play me at semester my sophomore year of college :().

Some of the guys I used to smash with had been practicing (and learning advanced techs) the entire year that they were not to playing me and managed to get good enough to beat me ~50% of the time. We started playing regularly again and they invited me to come with them to a tournament that fall.

That first big tournament was SMYM7 in 2007.
I ended up in pools with Eddie, which was my first good Gannondorf player experience. I think I managed to take a match off of him with my Ness.

There were some other mid-level smash dudes (whose names escape me) there who all managed to beat my *** pretty soundly. I did not make it out of pools.

First one was Beauty in Gothenburg

We were about 50 ppl there (I think) and I made bracket even though I only won 1 set
In bracket I got ***** by Calle W, something I was very happy about.

Should've played more friendlies

I played 100% Falco, even in friendlies. I wanted to get the most out of the time I played.

My first tourney was a small one in the backroom of an arcade in Youngstown. Didn't really know what to expect, so I was kinda just standin around with my friends that came with me. Figured out I was standing next to VaNz for like 20 minutes, had no idea.

Got into pools, played dempt and Abate, got ***** both times. That was the first time I experienced a pro luigi and it was super overwhelming. Either way it was super fun, got to meet some cool people and watch some great matches.

Also learned that The Lake is the coolest mother****er around.

then got utterly destroyed by Redd.
had some nice matches vs BigWenz, but I lost that one too.

overall I enjoyed being man-handled all around stages by multiple people.

shout-outs to everyone who ***** me.

My first tournament was Super Champ Combo in 2007 (?). I had started playing with a group of friends months earlier and one had the chillest parents ever. So we drove for 7 hours and got hotel rooms and smashed all night. In the morning we went to the venue and got to see all the legends in person. Ken, Isai, M2K, PC, Azen, Chillin, on and on the list of pros went. I think I beat two people in pools and a few more in friendlies but for the most part I got ****ing *****. I remember Falcomist and Lunin (lol I went to socal to play norcal) especially whomped on me. The best part was definitely watching and talking to people. I even met some of the troll buddies from gamefaqs. And I distinctly remember two up and coming players who came back on ken and isai and one even beat PC chris in singles...little did we all know. Oh and M2K was still the best....lol good times to be a marth main, he was untouchable at this tourney.

Totally unforgettable experience, and it solidified my position to keep playing this game and wanting to be a part of the community.

My first tourney was P5. Didn't get out of 1st round pools, and SW 4-stocked me twice on DL. My only win was from timing out a Peach main on Rainbow Cruise...that he CP'd.

Also, everyone at UMCP housed a bunch of European players along with M2K, so needless to say I learned a ****load.

I've only been to small local tourneys since but I definitely feel better going into Apex now.

March 2004.

It wasn't a dedicated Melee tournament, but rather a Nintendo event with a bunch of competitions, including Melee. The rules were pretty crappy. I don't remember the details, but I think it was something like 4-player free for all with all stages or something like that, possibly with a 1vs1 for the finals. It was probably done in tournament mode too.

No one really played Melee seriously at the time, and I can't remember how the tournament ended, except for the fact that I didn't win. I did win a Mario Kart Double Dash!! competition, though.

I won the Melee tournament in the following event in 2005, though, which had much better rules as I recalled. They were actual 1vs1s, but it was still done in tournament mode and with all stages on. I think it was something like 5 stocks, 5 minute matches or something like that. Best of 1s. The finals were played on Hyrule: My Young Link vs. a Sheik player.

It wasn't until 2009 that we got an actual, "proper" competitive Smash community though.

hmm... my first smash tournament was a brawl tourney at a library in a suburb near me.
We did tournament mode, 6 stocks 6 minutes (like every game went into sudden death, which we counted)
got eliminated in my first (and only) match, which was against my friends brother...
Overall, we were pretty pissed at that tourney (this was in summer of 2009 I think?) we quit brawl like a month or two after that lol.
Later found out that the "organizer" was in my graphics class (like a year later), we play melee all the time now :\

My first real/melee tournament was OSI 1 in the spring (?). Didn't win a single set that day (although I got close a few times, was the first Pichu player most of them had seen). Went Pichu the whole time, except for one match I went Roy for teh lolz (and got 4 stocked).

sadly, I don't have the ability to travel and am not able to attend many tournaments and there aren't any up where I live so yea... I guess I'ma start organizing them up here :3

Entering in tourney will always be a good experience. It is worth the 10$ you may lose. My first tourney was Apex and it was amazing. It made me really try and go out of my way to play, I got so good in those 3 days. I mained Falco back then. Before Apex i didnt know what shien OoS was. The 2nd day I was doing it on reaction, second nature. the third day I was shinegrabbing and Usmashing OoS no problem. I met so many good friends those 3 days. And plan to meet much more this Apex <3

my biggest advice, enter, get your *** kicked, pay your dues.

British tournament in 2006 called Anarachy Rules.

Pretty much lost to every one. Managed to beat two people in friendlies, one of which could not L-cancel.

First tourney was Carrollfest 2 here in Pittsburgh (I think it was May '11?). Didn't play in doubles and got beat pretty handily in singles. To be expected, as I had zero training. But it made me want to play and now I'm semi-competitive and try to go to as many tourneys as possible, so it's all good.
