Because I feel a need to convince people to play the game:I've sometimes thought of trying out Gaiden due curiosity (and it's just so unheard of anyway).
The big difference for the game comes from the fact that item management sucked in FE1, so to solve it they did the simplest thing, remove items. This results in all units having permanent weapons that you cannot unequip (not that you need to change them).
Magic now works like magic spells in regular RPGs in that you can use them at any time but since there is no MP stat, each time you use them they cost you some HP (don't worry it's not as broken as it sounds), ironically healers can attack in this game.
You can pick up items like a "Steel Sword" or a "Dragon Shield" but you can only equip 1 item at a time and like in regular RPGs they mainly just boost some stats for you.
Promotion and Stat Up items are regulated to special Shines placed along the world map/in small dungeons. Each shrine offers the chance to give you up to 3 boosts split between 2 different stats, once used they cannot be used for the rest of the save file.
There's also a world map like in FE8/13, the main feature of it though, are various towns and dungeons you can visit as well as randomly spawning enemies. They act like they would in other RPGs (although you don't fight random encounters in dungeons, more like you walk into pre-set rooms of enemies). They mostly just help move the story along and the dungeons aren't very long or complicated (usually 5-6 different rooms with 2-3 pre-set fights).
Other than that classes often have a lot of gimmicks to them (ex. Bow Knights can attack from 1-5 spaces, Saints heal 5hp each turn to adjacent units, Falcon Knights attacks are always super effective against monsters). Certain classes can also promote twice.
wut? Also I've imagine Alm and Cellica being long-time friends with Princess Daisy.
The game also has better graphics than FE1 (not every level is green) and the music has a lot more variety so you won't be stuck until the Final Chapter listening to the same music over and over again. The story is also much more well done than FE1 (and arguably 11), you can actually get a feel for Alm/Cellica's personalities.
If you do play the game though, I'd recommend playing it on easy mode. It doesn't do much other than give you double EXP, but considering the majority of the game will have you grinding enemies that only give you 1-3 EXP it's definitely worth it. Also lets you trade items freely between the two groups, but it doesn't do much since you unlock the function late in the game and the same amount of items are available for each group.
