For me, It'd have to be the fact that they put so much emphasis on character reveals instead of going into detail with new game mechanics.
Doing the latter helps alleviate spoiling the entire game while still squeezing out bits of new information with something to actually discuss about, and help reassure people's qualm on how the game is gonna be played.

Runner up is the lackluster title... coming from something like Super Smash Brothers then Melee then Brawl to just....for Wii U/3DS is just lazy imo. Mayhem or Rumble are better choices than "insert console here tm"
"Man I got in a melee last night"
"I was in a brawl"
"Oh yeah? I was in a for Wii U/3DS. That s**t was rough"

I have a new worst part:

The possibility that Gematsu had a negative effect on the game's quality... or that Sakurai let it.

You probably heard by now that Lucina was meant to be a Marth costume, changed to a new character slot possibly to replace one that was cut mid-development on short notice.

I don't know who I'm more angry at - Sal Romano, for making Sakurai feel the need to make a cut and add a complete clone, or Sakurai himself for carrying it out.

Note that I know this is just a possibility and not certain.
Sakurai wouldn't cut a character in the middle of development because of a leak =/.

I don't blame your disappointment, but you have to understand that Other M is current with the series. So they pretty much based most of the references from that game. Not that it is a bad thing since Other M as a game was still pretty decent and the character model wasn't all that bad (I don't think Ridley was too atrocious in that game, but I'm not going to argue about it). The storyline itself is what kill the game for most people (assuming they actually played it and not just watch the heated videos about it). Like it or not, seems like Sakurai/Nintendo having a hard time adding in a playable Metroid character. I'm not saying it's not possible, but just very unlikely for any more to pop up in the direction we're going for new characters. Don't forget we have Mother Brain as an AT as well, so it's just one more in the Metroid rep box and we still haven't seen all of the stages yet. Dark Samus would've been nice, but I guess they didn't have a solid moveset to work well with the physics for this Smash Bros. If it doesn't work out well this game, then there's always next time.

If Baby Ridley was playable, I would laugh my butt off but would be totally invested in the idea. He's so cute.
This might be a bit of a tangent, but I don't think that Other M was ruined because of story. The story was obviously a huge flaw, but for me it was the way that he game was designed that ruined it. Plus the awful art and music...

Back on topic. Sakurai didn't really base much of the brawl material off of Prime. Sure there was a stage, but samus didn't change designs, and it just seemed in general that he was ignoring those games. Then Other M comes out, and everything in smash 4 is based off it. It makes no sense to me.

hm! don't like the mii fighters as characters, no falco yet, unfortunate physics, sort of wish shine didn't look as bad as brawl's but w/e

[would really rather not have captain falcon either but that's obviously not a huge deal since he's been in the past three games]

I will let you know which ones I hate. They are the following Pit, Wii Fit Trainer, Peach, Rosalina, Marth, Zelda, Lucario, Greninja, Zero Suit Samus, Shiek, Palutena, Lucina, and Robin. These characters just represent bad traits and I would go in an explanation of each but I am afraid I can't due to the rules being strict. However the characters I want in Classic American Sonic and Dr Mario.

But that's the thing. It's mainly the plot and presentation that made it iffy, not the game itself. For most people, the game would be a lot more decent if the plot was better. It's that part of the game you can't really dismiss since the gameplay can only take you so far into it. There was some material he place in Brawl with Prime series. However, it seem like it was shared with 2D Metroids at the same time. Which would make it seem like it was overshadowing it. And obviously Other M is being used because it's current. Not the best idea since Prime series was clearly better than OM, but I guess he's choosing recent versions than pure popularity this time.

I don't think that is the case. Sal Romano had outdated information from the source. I think last month when Sakurai was asked about Greninja's inclusion he responded with saying that there was always going to be a new Pokemon representative reserved as the roster was finalized in 2012. This puts a lot of weight on the second round of information Sal Romano held onto that had "Pokemon from X/Y". While a lot here are saying "LOL GEMATSU DECONFIRMED!", that report last month, confirms that the leak is indeed real or more like the person who's feeding this information was involved with the development of game long ago.

I'm sure Shulk is safe and that there is another 1 or 2 other characters that the insider didn't know about. I suspected we would have gotten another unknown newcomer and that turned out to be Robin. Lucina- well, apparently there is a magazine that will go into detail as to why Chrom wasn't chosen but definitely shows that he was considered. I'm not worried about "slots" because it is limitless in this generation. It's the willingness of Sakurai to add more characters post-launch and I think Nintendo might want to cash-in on a popular game and have other character join in as DLC. Just don't expect more than 5 DLC characters.

The game itself was a huge problem for me and many other fans though. There was no exploration, the environments were boring, samus was awful to control with a dpad in a 3d space. The first person segments were disorienting, and dumb. Combat was repetitive and easy, no sense of isolation or wonder, music was god awful, etc. The story was just an extra kick in the crotch after all that.

To be honest, revealing 90% of the newcomers before release. What I loved about Melee was that the only veterans unlockable were Jigglypuff and Luigi, I was curious when I first played Melee because I was wondering were the hidden characters. Brawl ruined that when they went overboard on revealing new characters before release and most of the unlockables ended up being veterans. I kind of wished Pac Man was the last newcomer announced before release and the only one at e3 and every other newcomer was secret. Although the internet would ruin the surprise anyway.
I understand what you're saying and agree with you in a sense, but I think the problem is that in this day and age, the communication era haha, revealing newcomers is what hypes us up for the game and gives us reasons to buy it. Back in the day, it was just "oh I loved Smash 64, I'll get this one!" Unfortunately it doesn't seem like we can have that sense of mystery anymore, unless we go back to being casual players and just getting the games without paying attention to any news or anything. But that's impossible! We love these games and want to know as much as we can! How can we resist?! haha

As for the worst part of Smash 4 for me.....hm, I guess it's the anguish I feel for this game. I know I will love this game, but I also want it to be good competitively. Every time I look at videos, I constantly switch from being optimistic about the game, to being hopeless and thinking "well, Sakurai isn't gonna change that.".........But the good part is that the more I look at the game, the more it really does seem like they're trying to make it in between Melee and Brawl, in terms of the effectiveness of offense vs. defense. Considering some of the mechanics, it seems to me that Smash 4 may be like, heh, Street Fighter 4. By this I mean, it seems overall defensive, but once you get a hit, you can get some good damage in, whereas with Brawl, you'd hit someone once or twice and they'd just airdodge out of it and you're back to neutral already...Smash 4's mechanics kinda points to this mix of offense and defense by having better rolls and increased landing lag, yet also having increased hitstun, no more hitstun canceling, and getting knocked back farther and at lower percents than Brawl. The better recoveries are also in a way like saying "I'm still in it!" but opponents recovering are still at a disadvantage and can get edgeguarded, albeit not as effectively as Melee. You could even be potentially caught off guard in terms of edgehogging if you try to sweet spot the ledge. I saw a video where a Pikachu tried to grab the ledge, and the instant he did, Greninja jumped in and trumped his ledge grab. If your timing as an edgehogger is good enough, you could probably catch the player off guard and then hit him further away from the stage. Meteor smashes also seem to be buffed considering the new ground bounce mechanic that'll help you either get follow-ups, or even KOs. It'd be cool if you were like really high up in the air, and you could meteor someone, have them bounce up, then meteor them again as you're falling. The user Venks7 also wrote a lot about his demo impressions, and according to him, Shield Breaking seems to be more prominent this time around. All this stuff gives me hope, but I still can't help but sometimes doubt Sakurai, considering his design philosophy!

.......well then.......other than that........I would have to say that I don't like how ZSS is looking....in terms of playing against her. Maybe when Sakurai said Samus is the best, he actually meant ZSS, cause what the HELL is with her mobility. Way too good. I think maybe they should make her helpless after Down B or something, or less air-speed, cause otherwise I feel like she'd be broken. No disrespect to Zero, but I hope his stalling opened Sakurai's eyes to how annoying camping as ZSS could be for another player, and he'll reduce its effectiveness somehow.

You and the "many fans" must be the minority because all I heard was "the story was bad; Samus is too [insert emotional adjective here]!". Don't get me wrong though. The game did had some short-comings across the board for "many fans", but clearly the plot for it was the driving point for most people who heard or even touched this game. And even with all the bad publicity/press, it still glue itself to SSB4. Not much can really be done here since the game is practically set in stone for Metroid representation.

Its the way he presents them in the pictures that is disturbing but also with Peach and Rosalina being cartoony mario characters but then they get hentai overhauled in this game which is just an eyesore. Also we don't need this many female characters they are annoying as hell.
I dont think you understand what hentai is young man.

It was mentioned here already, but it's the division caused in the fanbase by the Gematsu leak (or leaks in general). It was a fun thing to aid in speculation about the game, but it stopped being fun when others started picking on each other about believing and not believing. I won't say the name, but I left a certain forum because of it, heh.

Otherwise, I pretty much have no complaints about the game itself. I'm pretty optimistic about how the game will turn out!

The fluctuation of quality in new-commers: From megaman, one of the highest points in the series, to 100+ FE characters almost no one cares about...so bad

Also no combos = No fun
100+ FE characters almost no one cares about...
Fire Emblem: Awakening lifetime sales.
Fire Emblem Awakening - Metacritic
Only people who don't care about these characters are people who don't care about Fire Emblem, and you shouldn't be not caring about Fire Emblem in the first place.

Worst part for me.

Waiting another three more months until the 3DS version comes out and not sure whether specific characters would either be in or not in the final roster.

There was a post on gamefaqs a few days ago that said the Gematsu leak was right except for two characters, that instead of Chrom it would be Lucina and instead of Chorus Men it would be Marshal.

I think we will find the answer by the time the 3DS version comes out in two months time to see whether Shulk and the Chorus Men are in.

Also was that post related to someone named Garfield64?

That just might be the case. The information appears outdated and Chrom was obviously considered earlier on but they went with Lucina. This might play a part with Marshal- with the change of not allowing players to switch between characters through gameplay (Shiek, Samus, etc). Whatever the case is, the Gematsu leak is legitimate- or more like the person giving out this information.

Haha thank you. Even after all this, what worries me is ZSS. Watching the grand finals of the invitational, she's so damn fast so she's hard to hit, and then Hbox couldn't even get any good follow-ups because of how far grabs sent people, so I'm really hoping they refine throws and/or make ZSS less mobile. When I say that I think you could get good damage in, I don't mean big combos. I mean more like a simple 3 hit combo or something that would rack up damage, but it may also put you in an advantageous position compared to your opponent. I REALLY hope Sakurai was taking mental notes from that invitational because I would be unhappy if the final game turns out a lot like this invitational final. It was very drawn out. I'm up for the game being Street Fighter 4 esque in terms of it being overall defensive like this, but when you get a hit, you can get a short combo going, or like hit them off the stage, or something rewarding.

The physics engine that made throws launch so far has been tweaked a lot since the demo, especially with damage scaling factored in. So she won't be AS OP in the final product.

I guess Sakurai's trying to make up for having to use her most sexist design by making it perfectly clear that she's a skilled warrior.

I had a feeling. Maybe the mods should know about this.

I think what's most disappointing for me thus far is the roster in general. I know I'm going to get flamed for my opinion most likely, but it is just that, my opinion. As far as newcomers are concerned, none of them really feel that interesting. I mean, so far we've gotten a walking manikin who is not even a real character as far as I'm concerned, a blue Peach (looks wise, I know she'll play much different), a guy whos "unique" quality is...punching? An obscure and irrelevant Pokemon, Mii Fighters (just...no), Marth with longer hair (at least Roy was a cool clone), and to top it all off, we have good ole' Palutena. Again, this is just my opinion, but seriously, we get a character that looks like Zelda with a staff, and is part of a series that has spawned a whopping two games. If you didn't think Sakurai was biased before, think again. What bothers me about having some of these characters is that it means they're taking away roster spots that could go to more established characters who are a part of more deserving franchises of representation, such as King K. Rool, Ridley, or bringing back Mewtwo. Then as far as veterans are concerned, I'm really disappointed that we're bringing back characters such as Toon Link, Lucario, Ike, and Zero Suit Samus. I would've liked Toon Link being back if they actually made him, ya know...different. But oh well. Zero Suit Samus is the character I didn't want back most of all though. Talk about slapping the Metroid franchise in the face. The fact that they think the same character in different suits is deserving of two different roster spots is asinine. Especially when people have been begging for Ridley's inclusion since what, Melee? We mine as well bring back Dr. Mario if we're going to have characters like her. Again, this is just my opinion, so please don't bash me for having it.

Zero Suit Samus is getting a noticeably critical eye today.

Just my observation.

My only problem with her is hardly the unpopular opinion; the heels. Not only are they obviously horrible for combat and to wear in general, but they directly violate her original design intention in Zero Mission (which specifically said "ATTENTION! Don't give heel too much height!").

I'm an author, so I mean it when I say this: Don't. ****. With canon.

I feel the same way.

I can understand your frustrations, but allow me to maybe help you see things from a different perspective. I don't want to change your opinion, but this is what I think. While yes, maybe in terms of "content" and actual recognition, the newcomers are not all that spectacular. The thing with Sakurai is that, well, his philosophy with characters this time around is that he only wants to add people that he thinks would bring something new to table, that no other character can do. I think an exception here is Lucina, but that seems to be for the purpose of fanservice. Anyway, while yes, people like Rosalina may not be quite as well-liked or known as K Rool, or other classic characters, but I think that this time around, the newcomers are truly amazing in the different playstyles and abilities they offer, possibly even unlike any Smash before.

Megaman is almost entirely projectile based, and while Snake had a lot of projectiles too, Snake operated more on placing traps, while Megaman seems to be more of a zoning character. He has a projectile he can throw in all directions, a bomb he can stick onto people, and he can then rack damage on his opponents before the detonation by keeping them away with his unique jab, Metal Blade, or Charge Shot. Leaf Shield doesn't seem very good atm, but it's a protective shield that he can, again, use as a projectile if he wishes. So he has a lot of unique, awesome potential, and I didn't even cover all his moves. Villager is unique for his Pocket ability, and his Tree. His Pocket is like a reflector, but the awesome thing about it is that he can "reflect" it whenever he wants. Not to mention his unorthodox down smash that traps people, and his forward smash which can drop bowling balls off ledges. His dash attack is also a projectile. Then there's the tree. The Tree can be placed in about 2 seconds if you mash Down B, but it also gives you access to other moves while you prepare it. You get a watering can that you can push people away with, and the Axe is a really powerful attack, but lags after. So Villager seems to be all about patience, who has a lot of options and you gotta pick when is the right time to do what, while you keep opponents away with your Lloid Rocket. Little Mac is a character who has probably the best ground game of anyone in the series ever. As your opponent gets knocked further away, you'll have to think about if any of your air moves are worth throwing out to juggle or to keep the opponent on your terms. More than ever before, you have to think about risk vs. reward by playing Little Mac. Can this ground game make up for his air game? It's kinda like a reverse Melee Falcon in a way, b/c Falcon players usually stay in the air in Melee. I personally am looking forward to trying combos with Mac like Down throw, jump, nair, nair, land, and then maybe an up smash or something.

Since you mentioned her, look at Palutena. For starters, she is unique in the sense that she has 12 entirely different special moves! So right off the bat, you're bound to customize her to the point where you will find which of her special moves you like, and you can even change her moves based off of your playstyle! We haven't seen enough of her, but she has a humongous up smash like no other character, a shield bash move, I don't think we've had a character before that uses a staff, but her abilities look amazing! Then the Mii Fighters......dude.....c'mon.....so again, like Palutena, 12 unique special moves......x 3, but past that, how awesome is it you could potentially fight as and customize your Mii enough to fight as a character you never even thought you'd see in Smash? I'm already looking forward to playing as Walter White and kicking some ass, or Barney Stinson as a gunner, since he loves laser tag so much?? (How I Met Your Mother) The possibilities are endless.

My point with this wall of text is, I understand your frustration that maybe some cool characters you want aren't in the game. But Smash has always had an unpredictable roster, which is part of the beauty of it, but now, more than EVER before, it seems like Smash is taking inspiration from other fighting games by making these newcomers all extremely unique and offer something no other character can, just as Sakurai wanted. So, don't just look at the characters. Look at what they bring to the table!

I'm most disappointed by the lack of excellent sword sound effects that were present in Melee. Marth's tipper will never be as satisfying as it once was, and even missed swings sound as if a hollow or blunt weapon was swung, rather than a blade. Minor, but still pretty disappointing for me.

I agree. Especially with sound effects, more realistic doesn't always mean better.

Super Smash Flash 2 even still uses some sounds from 64 when they're the most crisp and satisfying for the situation. Progress ain't always good.
