I think it's dumb that in the year 2012, WoW still costs $15 a month (slightly less if you buy in bulk)

That's just ridiculous at this point. I shudder to think of how much money I've spent on that game total.

I would go look it up, but my account is still frozen/banned from when it got hacked and I was too lazy to recover it, so even after I log in I can't look at my payment history until I unfreeze it -_- good enough incentive to not start playing again I guess.

Sometimes I think how much fun it would be if I could play Vanilla WoW with my friends on skype that have never played the game. Using you know, illicit methods. It's never gonna happen though.

WoW has the content to back up $15 a month though, the fact that SW:ToR is 15 is hilarious.

neither of them can justify $15 in 2012 actually. maybe that's just my opinion but damn it's needlessly expensive. i know i'd consider playing again if the price wasn't so outrageous. i can technically afford it but i dont want to.

i thought 15/mo was standard for mmos.

at release WoW had more content but most of it didn't work correctly (at least for me) for months.

There was barely any cohesive story at all in Vanilla until 60. What there was pre-60 was heavily split up in terms of levels, etc generally, and took you to half the zones on both continents, and post 60 BRD AGHHHH MAKE IT STOPPPPPPPP

ha. cataclysm looked soooo good to me at first, but they took too damn long to release it that i lost all my hype and quit forever :bee:
i was really looking forward to playing during an expo release, for once. i've never done it before. even though the servers always suck.

also yeah vanilla WoW had no story to speak of

It's funny that MoP is gettin' so much hate because a lot of the changes they're making are drastic improvements to the way MMOs should function in general.

i really dislike what theyre doing with the talent tree system
Why?

As somebody who spent most of his time theorycrafting, the new trees are in every way an improvement in freedom from the old trees.

The resistance to change from people on this is really bizarre, because the old trees only gave the illusion of choice.

At some point they do actually have to manufacture new lore

It got one hell of a ride from WC3, though.

All I've heard about MoP was "LOL PANDAS LOL 12 YEAR OLDS"
I know practically nothing else. I don't know how Monks will function (I'm sure they'll be blatantly OP on release, knowing Blizzard)
I heard something about a pet battling system that resembles pokemon, which just sounds silly to me. Probably a good way for ActiBlizzard to make money, again knowing them.
The actual expansion sounds good from the tiny bit I remember.
edit: also does nobody remember that Vanilla WoW technically had no "big bad guy"

I don't know how talent trees changed. Didn't Cataclysm talents change drastically from the previous expansion, anyway?

FROM WHAT I REMEMBER:
Vanilla WoW: 51 talent points total. 31 points to get the final spell of a tree, 3 trees per class.
TBC: Same, but 61/41 respectively.
WotLK: Same, but 71/51 respectively. I think.
Cataclysm: I don't quite know. I seem to remember you had to spend x points in a tree before you could go to a new one. It sounded constricting in a way, but they were talking about how it was better. I also remember "MASSIVE" revamps, with stuff like Paladins getting Holy Power (how does that work btw? Is it good?) and Warlocks getting major overhauls, as well as hunters with focus.

You are aware btw, that the prices for pretty much everything have risen over the last 7 years?

Haven't read too much into it, but healers use mana while the tanking/dps trees use an energy like resource, as well as not having any auto-attacks, and using their weapons for finishing moves (I guess like rogues)

It's more to placate the people who reach end-game and after having cleared the current content raid/capped VP/earnt their conquest points for the week having nothing to do. A lot of people collect pets, so this seems like a smart addition. Not to mention capitalising on Nintendos failure to make a pokemon mmo. I can finally go and catch rare critters, train em, take on whatever the equivalent of Gym Leaders are called and then fight others with a battlegrounds-like queue system.

If you can't tell, I'm really looking forward to this. My latency (average is 300~ ping) as well as class choice (Balance Druid) rule pvp out, and timezones and free time make me only really able to do pug raids, so this is really welcome, moreso after their decision to remove separate lockouts from 10/25 man raids. I miss the days of 10 mans were for guilds, 25s were the pugs.

The cata trees basically removed and made baseline a lot of the 'trash' talents (1/2/3/4/5% more damage by X) trying to make the ones remaining more 'meaningful' but instead most specs still use cookie-cutters with about 4 talent points to put in 'optional' talents. You also had to reach your 31 point talent before you could stick some in other trees, and due to the smaller number of talents, got a point every 2 levels from 10 onwards (except from 81-85 where you got one each level)

MoP is just adding almost all of those talent abilities and stuff as core skills when you pick a spec/class and just making the talents utility spells (Like druids at 75 can choose from an aoe disorient, a 'vacuume' like spell that pulls people to a spot, or a 5 second stun)

Personally, I'm glad there's no 'big bad' this time around. I know it's silly to say this, but it doesn't seem realistic that the world's going to be doomed every week. I'm going to enjoy the less 'working together' and more faction fighting.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the DotA styled BG should be interesting

If there's any silver lining pertaining to the plot of this game, it's this.

Just got Cata yesterday.
Feels good to know that it only took me about 2 weeks to get back in the game after about a year and a half hiatus.
Lvl 83 atm and back on top of the recount chart ;)

Just sad that they nerfed DragonSoul before I got to try :(

bought Cata within a week of release and had the opposite experience. Was really turned off by all the changes. I missed my Old World. I remember being so amped for TBC when I got it, undecided about WotLK but in approval of the achievement system, and just straight up pissed with Cata after I finished all the new quests. Didn't even bother with the first tier of raids.

Just really broke my heart that they trashed so much of my old world.

Imagine you were married to the perfect person for like 6 years and then she gets eaten by a bear and you know the rest of your life will never get any better. From her, it's downhill. Every other woman is now second-rate. And you can't have first-rate anymore because she's gone forever. You want to hate and forget about her but you wished that ****ing bear would've lost his job.

that's me and wow. true emotional attachment.

But achievements are one of the worst additions to WoW and gaming in general :(

I said I only played the beta, but what I did play I enjoyed. The starting areas for goblins and worgen were MASSIVE improvements over other starting stuff. The landscape was... different, but quite beautiful and interesting to explore. I can understand your sentiments though, it sucks being unable to go back to your favorite old place once it's changed.
It also sucks that I deleted all the screenshots from beta that I took >_<

I never did much in the new zones... I did a little questing in Vashj'r and it was ok. I'm sad I never went to Hyjal (I remember going there when it was off-limits by jumping over a wall in winterspring... with a guild... fun times) and the twilight highlands were blocked when I was in beta.

What's wrong with achievements, exactly? It gives a lot of people new things to do that they might have otherwise not done, promoting general interest in the game.

Most of those reasons are user-specific. If you choose to use guides to find out item locations, etc, whatever, that's your choice. You can't blame the system for the laziness of the user.

i only read the subtitles of the sections actually, and only agreed with some of them.
my point really is that i enjoy achievements that i feel like i achieved without the system holding my hand and telling me EXACTLY what to do. it doesn't even have to be anything specific. for example, one of my favorite "achievements" when i think of WoW memories was "survive gank attempts while leveling in STV"

i asked google http://www.msxbox-world.com/features/article/452/top-reasons-why-achievementstrophies-are-bad.html

but for me, personally, I can't remember a single achievement that I cared about after completing it. I can, however, remember things I've done pre-achievements that felt like actual "achievements." You know what I mean?

At best, all achievements were to me were occasional distractions if I was really bored. I realize some people might like them, I guess.
One thing I agree with in that article.

Achievement points should be able to be redeemed for something. Otherwise, it's just a meaningless number

Well some achievements do give out a reward...
when i started the game i glanced over them and saw that you could get "the Explorer" title if you explored every single area in the game so i made sure to do this...

also you get the albino drake for collecting 50 mounts...

so yeah most feel meaningless, but others actually have a reward

EDIT: and it kinda shows how much time you've wasted on WoW

Why? If you don't care about them ignore them. Its not like Blizz/MS/Sony are FORCING you to go after achievements. At least in WoW some of them give you stuff. Although I wish that they would attach more titles to more achievements.

I said I only played the beta, but what I did play I enjoyed. The starting areas for goblins and worgen were MASSIVE improvements over other starting stuff. IMO the Alliance got ****ed with the Worgen. Yeah, the new starting zones were great but the racials were terrible, you have to roll a Forsaken if you want the rest of the worgen story and to top it all off instead of getting their own district in SW like they were supposed to they got a ****ty tree in Darn.

Actually, I feel like Cata was on big middle finger to Alliance players in general.

I never did much in the new zones... I did a little questing in Vashj'r and it was ok. I'm sad I never went to Hyjal (I remember going there when it was off-limits by jumping over a wall in winterspring... with a guild... fun times) and the twilight highlands were blocked when I was in beta.
I never played beta but in the final version of Cata I found the questing in the revamped zones to be much more fun than in the old versions of those zones. The quests were all story driven instead of grind driven, the changes encouraged exploration and everything had a sort of newness combined with nostalgia feel to it.

And don't worry about Hyjal, you're not missing much. IMO it was the most boring of the new zones. The best was Uldum.

I feel like the only thing that sucked about Cata was the end game which was recyled content after recycled content.

What are your thoughts on transmog?

I feel like its been a great addition overall. It encourages running old content and ensures that your character doesnt look ugly

Right now I'm playing Old Republic so I haven't done transmog yet, so I have no idea how they handled it. I like the idea, though.
