When I look at character choice I look for the qualities about the character that sit well with myself. I ask myself,
1. Does this character play in a way that sits right with me?
2. Do I like this character?
3. Am I having fun?
Nothing about tier positions comes up, nothing about how good the actual character is. Why do me or others do this? This seems like it's an odd thing to do if people are playing to win. I try to use Link in tournaments, yet he is the second worst character in the game for many reasons.
When people are playing to win they should aim to use the character that is the best possible chance of winning. From this people tier ***** to aim for the best character in the game and only play them for being the best character in the game. I should feel as though this is a legit tactic and I should expect people to do this, but at the same time it doesn't feel right with myself.
I guess they main reason this doesn't appeal to myself is the fact people really don't care if they are having fun or if they like the character at all or his/her playstyle, they just want to take a path to victory that seems to be the easiest method. If people are playing to win I should expect people to do this, yet I see people around me playing characters that aren't the best possible choice to victory some even that have questionable viability.
I should be able to accept other people's choices in character even if the reasons are not ones I can personally accept, but it just doesn't feel right to me. There is no reason why I should be Playing Link in SSBB or even SBB64, he is inferior to so many other characters in so many ways, but I still play him due to my liking of him as a character and his play-style. If I want to win I should play Snake who has a simular play-style but is much more viable, but I don't because, well I'm not entirely sure myself outside of my personal fanboy inside of me.
The same thing can apply to me playing Sakura in Street Fighter 4 or Full moon Len in Melty Blood.
I try to play competitively in anything I play, but at the same time I try to play what is the most comfortable with myself, even if the options have limited viability. I play to win yet I go for options to win that aren't the best course to win. I love to play competitively, it's not like I'm a super casual trying to shove morals into places it doesn't always belong. I understand this even if I do believe knowing that I'm having fun is more important to me than making money.
I guess this whole rant/blog is mostly me saying, I play to win, but I use options that are very questionable. I want people to do the same, but when I see people play a character that is top tier only because they are top tier or the best character in the game, it feel dirty when they don't really give a **** about who they play.
Illogical thoughts of my own in a nutshell.
