Why do you play Brawl competitively?

I wanted to get some insight into why people actually consider playing Smash Bros competitively. As a long-time casual player of Smash Bros since 1999, I never found any reason that makes competitive Smash worth playing.

No I'm not trolling, and I expect people to bash me. I just want people to give me a better understanding of the competitive circle surrounding Smash Bros.

I think the real question is why not?

Everyone has different reasons. You can make some money, have fun, meet people, and basically have more fun with the game.

No one should bash you, you haven't said anything controversial to anyone amiright?

For me it just gives me something to do that is interesting. Going to tournaments is really fun/interesting because you meet people from all over the place (and country). Looking back 10 years from now most people will probably not remember that they went to [insert random party #100] but I will remember how I traveled from Maryland to San Fransisco to Las Vegas for tournaments, staying with and meeting other people, having fun not-even-playing-the-game.

Basically its more of an extra - ordinary life.

Oh, and its a nice way to see the country. I've been to like every corner of Ohio/Maryland/Virginia for tournaments and been to every major region of the country. You know those movies about how a bunch of highschool/college type kids go on a road trip and have the time of their lives? That's basically what its like going to some of the Smash tournaments I've been to. Crazy adventures.

I think if you have to ask the question then it isn't for you.

As for me I love the people, my crew and some of the other players in this region have become good friends of mine and I've enjoyed being a TO and running events. It is a blast. I want to be better. So I play for tons of different reasons. It isn't solely because I like Brawl.

I hate brawl as a competitive game, but I love the community, especially my crew. I'm primarily a melee player, but I still enter brawl tournaments for that reason.

I got into it because I moved to Australia for a few months, so in order to meet people and to get a chance to continue playing these games I started going to the local meets and tournies.

Well, I haven't gone to any tourneys yet, but I play competitively because I want to be awesome (top-tier) at something in life, and (hopefully) the Super Smash Brothers series is/will be one of these things (along with academics and being very creative :chuckle:)

I don't play Brawl competitively because it's terrible.

Melee and 64 on the other hand...

I think the question you meant to ask is why play Smash Bros. series competitively, not just SSBB.

While I devote more of my time for competitive puzzle and racing genre games, I play the SSB series competitively for a variety of reasons. I enjoy the Nintendo series, makes the game more fun and meaningful (the better you get at something, the better you still want to be), gives me goals to strive for, provides new experiences, and is a game me and my friends and want to enjoy to its fullest.

...

melee gets me wimminz true story
The wonders of SSBM. :)

I brawl competitively because I want to play good people, lose to good people and win against good people.

Video games are something that I've always really excelled at. People who are better than I am at Brawl inspired me to become better and I hope that I can do the same for other people I play with. I love games in general. Poker, video games...anything that gets me to think strategically.

I love going to tournaments. I had the jitters at first, but I've learned to chill and just learn as much as I can in order to win. It's helped me make friends I would never have met and it has allowed me to get out and see the world...like central Michigan and a few other places in Toledo.

I regret being so young during the Melee days though. >.> I do play Melee at a higher level as well, I just didn't get my first car until I got Brawl. lol

I hate this community.

I hate all of you.

My ego, like in most games, is to beat all of you. Not for money, just to beat all of you.

I play Brawl competitively because I don't know how to comprehend other fighters. ^^

Honest.

The game is very simple and works at the speed level with which my mind can work with. x)

For the same reason people play sports:
- Passes the time
- Competition
- Representing your region/area
- Money
- Recognition

Smash is something to compete in and if you're good at it, why not?

I used to play Melee only, but since there's been Melee/Brawl tournaments in my community, I've made a few friends who only play brawl so I ended up going to more brawl events so I could hang out with them and stuff.

AZ just ***** this topic, i agree wholeheartedly even tho i don't travel for brawl per se. In the melee years driving to maryland from maine 9 hour road trip lol, going to every state on the east coast etc are probly the strongest memories i have of the last four years of my life. Huge trips with friends to see all my other friends from around the country. No one else I know outside of smash knows as many people as I do from far out areas of the country and world.

Of course this applies to a bunch of different games you could travel for, but idk if any game has the underground scene down like smash does.

LoL your sig is amazing Banks.

I'd write my reasons for playing competitively, but i'd get so entranced in what I'm saying that I'd stay up for another hour writing it down perfectly.

Playing this game competitively has honestly been one of the best things to ever happen to me. And I'm not joking.

Probably going to agree with HugS on this one.

Also.. I almost cried eating dinner with "the gang" from my last tourney just on Sunday... the community are about the only people I can call anywhere near being my friend besides 1 single friend I have outside of the community....

But crying at dinner would've been bad...

EDIT:
$447 in that pile OS? :p

Dunno, don't remember. I posted the same thing in the back room when Mew2King asked my why I played Brawl last year, and when I saw this thread I couldn't resist doing it again.

(this time I didn't post 7 repeats of the initial picture before the final one)

I missed a $20 I think and it's $467, either way it doesn't matter. (I also edited because I missed a $10 to make it $447)

:p still doesn't matter, we can see you play for the money.. lol

I don't live there anymore.

That was the semester of my student teaching, so I didn't have time to do things like eat or clean or sleep.

Money, money, money, is there any other reason to go a tournament?

>.< getting 400$ bucks in a day just playing is the best.

Because I suck at Melee.

Duh.

(But I am trying to play Melee competitively now, Brawl is getting way too boring.)
