I think he was just a character without any backstory, purely added because he was silly. You could ask the creators and they wouldn't even know.

For the thing of the moon not being alive. Doesn't a character in the game comment on how it's eyes are different? That it's usually blue?

I read somewhere that he was shiggy moto. But I think that hes most likly just either an ikana or a shiekah. Or if you rele wanna start theoryorizing, he could be a dark spirit messanger from "down there"
Where ever that is in zelda.

Those "theories" are all pretty much garbage too.

The HMS is a Sheikah because he has the Mask of Truth? Or maybe he just has it because... he's a collector of rare masks, as stated in the game?I mean, by the Mask of Truth->Sheikah logic, the HMS is a bunny because he has the Bunny Hood in OoT.

Also, the HMS is part of the ancient tribe of MM because he has knowledge of how Majora's Mask was created? By that logic, the Great Deku Tree and Sheik are Goddesses because they have knowledge of the creation of Hyrule. As a collector of rare masks, it's expected that the HMS would have special knowledge about rare masks, don't you think?

(There was also no explanation on that page about the HMS being a member of the Ikana race or a messenger from hell, two theories of yours in your original post. I'd like to know what parts of MM give credence to either of those ideas...)

Has no one taken into account that he could be a descendant of the tribe that performed hexing rituals with the mask. He did know that knowledge and I'm pretty sure their werent any libraries back then. It mustve been knowledge passed down. Either that or hes just a salesman spewing nonsense.

I've thought on this for a long period of time before. I think it's important to remember that Majora's Mask is highly metaphorical in many elements. I think that it'd highly possible that parts of the HMS are independent of the lands and legends of Hyrule and Termina. Being that a large element of the game was composed of messages that the game conveys through the trading of masks, and the idea of happiness associated with masks in general, I think that the theme of him being the "Happy Mask Saleseman" is a precursor and metaphor for other themes and messages in the game. I think there's a lot more that could be investigated into this approach.

However, I think that, in his canonical actions, he plays another role. It is certain that he is a magical person of some sort, because (if you believe the Message of Majora's Mask) no mere mortal would have been able to get Majora's Mask from Stonr Temple Tower where it was sealed away. But he's certainly not some incredibly strong mage because if that were so he wouldn't've gotten mugged by an imp so easily. With that said, I think that he has some connection Majora's Mask and its origins, possibly as a guardian. Notice, that to other characters the mask acts as a corrupting influence, almost always prompting the user to wear it (I.E. the Skull-Kid and the kid inside the tree.) However, the Happy Mask Salesman resists this temptation while being fully aware of its power. He actually fears the mask's power and is deeply distraught when it is stolen. Therefore, I think that he is someone with extensive knowledge of the mask, with extensive training on how to resist its power. This is an ability which I would attribute first to the people who created it, or to the people who sealed it away, and I think that he is affiliated with one of those groups (if they are not the same group.)

Ultimately, I think that he is the person who originally sealed the Majora with the Song of Healing. However, his seal was not strong enough to fully subdue Majora's powers so he took it upon himself to guard it. Consequently, I also think that he obtained immortality in order to be able to effectively do this.

In his eternal guard, he decided to pass the time with a passion that he could enjoy for eternity: Selling Masks. Being that he is a Happy Mask SALESMAN and not a COLLECTOR, I believe that he spent his endless life traveling from place to place, easing the sorrows of people with his song, making them masks, and then selling those masks to others in order to make people happy.

Of course, there's several flaws with this theory. The HMS is an enigma.

Here's something interesting I've noticed while listening to the zelda music that constantly plays at my job (My co-workers all love Zelda, so they listen to it a lot :D).

How strong really IS Majora's Mask? In the world of Termina, it's no doubt that it is pretty much all-powerful. But suppose that Majora's Mask happened to make it's way to Hyrule. What do you think will happen?

My theory is that all the supreme power in the mask would completely cease to exist if it ever made it to Hyrule. Why would I say that? Well, lets look at the the beginning of MM. We begin the game with Link trotting through the Lost Woods to heaven knows where in search for his "Lost friend". Enter stage right, Tatl and Tael. They sneak up on Epona and knock Link off his horse and rend him senseless. And here appears Skull Kid, wearing Majora's Mask. Do you think Skull Kid was under the control of Majora's Mask at this time? No, I dont think so. If you notice, he actually takes OFF his mask to get a better look at Link and Epona. He doesnt do anything that the skull kid didnt do in OoT. He can appear, disappear, play an instrument, and jump really high! In fact, the stealing of the ocarina and the kidnapping of Epona plays off as only a really mean prank, which is exactly what the skull kid does. Only after he enters Termina did this prank get out of control.

Once entering Termina wearing the mask, he instantly became possessed by it's power. All of the sudden, the Skull Kid has terrible new powers: such as transformations... and flying.

This could explain why the Happy Mask Salesman came to Hyrule in the first place. He's not some kind of demented creep with the need of super-powers. In fact, he might have come to Hyrule to keep Majora's Mask out of Termina, so that it can do no harm. In Hyrule, it is worthless: simple face-wear. Only when you enter Termina, does it have it's power. The Happy Mask Salesman is a protector of the mask, much like Link is the protector of Master Sword. Suppose if Link took the Master Sword into Termina. Do you think it would have the same power it did in Hyrule? Perhaps not.

Perhaps the reason why he's smiling all the time is because he has a lot of **** to worry about. He DOES seem to have a pretty jumpy dimeanor.
