What do you think they did wrong?

I think the whole Move Decay thing was a good idea, can keep yourself alive much longer against people who are less experienced because they continue to overuse certain moves.

No hitstun, low gravity, reverse edge grabbing, no directional airdodging were all terrible...

That's really about it though... No hitstun, low gravity, reverse edge grabbing, no directional airdodging were all bad...
no wavedashing, l cancelling, slower gameplay, tripping bad too..

but still pretty fun game

Turn off tap-jump, smarter AI, made the good people from melee bad and the bad ones good, Move Decay, Footstool Jump, and Assist Trophies

Oh yeah,
No Crouch Cancelling really hurts and the lack of DI really irritates me.

Yeah, controller customization is great. Finally, I can turn tap jump off and reassign the R/X buttons.

They were smart enough to kick out Roy, Dr. Mario, and Pichu.
...but weren't smart enough to keep Mewtwo which was a BIG mistake in Sakurai's part

anyway the only thing right about Brawl would probably be a better charcter selection other than that, all it's modes (except vs.), AT's where rather useless

I second that.
Darn, I was trying not to mention any negatives while entering this topic... :p

Good points, I guess would be easier grabbing of edges (though the computers abuse that a LOT), a bigger roster, and characters that are actually not so broken against each other (as in, they're all fun to play with... compared to Melee, where you'd be juggled around as Bowser. Here, he's actually very fun). A lot of great music, that's good... a grand adventure mode (I don't understand why everyone hates it; it's the closest to a great Game-collage movie experience we'll ever see)... Sonic the Hedgehog, FINALLY... and that's really about it.

Sure, there may be more trophies and stickers and whatnot... but I believe Melee is the best of the Smash trio thus far.

Better graphics (duh), epic music list with customizable settings, new button configuration, an actual story mode, better roster, better? AI (Godly reaction times anyone?) Sonic (his inclusion opens new boundaries for smash), bringing back character openings (i love this feature), better character taunts( 3 for each character except Snake), replay feature, better snapshot options, stage builder, coin launcher, better color(sometimes costume) swaps, and online

There are many good things in Brawl:

- It is a more balanced game than before.
- They fixed many moves that were too weak ( Ness moves, Dk moves, Kirby moves, etc).
- They nerfed characters that needed to be nerfed.
- Gliding is nice.
- Final smashes are awesome.
- I like the new Items.
- Assist Trophies are fun and diverse.
- The online mode is a big plus.
- Huge and well balanced roster.
- I think L cancel had to be removed, or else everyone just used air attacks with power and no lag. That was boring. A game is not balanced if a single tactic (L canceled air attacks) is always better and you don't use the rest (ground combat).
- Stage Builder is a dream come true, even if it is not that good.
- To be able to record battles is something I dreamed since Smash 64.
- The game OST if the best of all time.
- I like footstool jump.
- The new air dodge, grab item, power shield system is better.
- The game is better at this speed. As a 4 player game is less confusing and friendly to new people. What I call "Smash Moments" when a sequence of things happen (and people die in iinteresting ways) are more likely to happen with a lower speed. They used to happen in Smash 64, not in Melee.
- The characters entrance are back.
- I love how they integrated all characters and their personalities in SSE.
- Crawl is a nice addition. And it allows crawl-dash.
- Wall cling is good.
- Super armor on moves is nice.
- Declonification.

Things I don't like:

- I loved wave dash. It had a nice feeling and was a nice way to approach.
- I think the big shield (Z shielding ) is missing. I liked that option.
- I don't like that missiles (fireballs, lasers, etc) are often too short in Brawl.
- I guess there should have been a system to grab your opponent toes when he grabs the ledge so you cannot grab it.
- Chain grabbing is detestable.
- Too many glitches.
- Similar Final Smashes.

Turning off Tap-Jump is great, as well as using the C-Stick in 1P Mode.

The music is the best part of the game. One of the coolest soundtracks I've heard.

Oh i forgot to mention final smashes, footstool jumps, final smash trophies, crawling, more balance?(i think), toon link (i love this character), gale boomerang (i love this weapon), more declonifixation, wall cling, easier to short hop (a little too hard in melee), and assist trophies

The Right:

Balanced the game and its characters and movesets in general, for the most part
Less Clones
Extra mechanics (footstools, crawling, smoother aerial combat, similar fall speeds, improved air dodging, etc.)
Added "My Music"
Kirby and Yoshi are finally good characters
Made stages more fun
Balanced the game
Eliminated wavedashing
Removed useless characters
EEPIIIIC WIIIIIIIIDESCREEEEEEENNN!!!!
Added a control customization
Made the menus more attractive
Made music WAAAYY better
Allowed GCN controllers =D
You can now grab the edge with your back
Balanced the game

The wrong/The left:

Didn't add a Castlevania character.
Got lazy with Star Fox characters' Final Smashes
Falcon Punch takes too long
Added odd choices of music (WHERE'S THE FIGHT WITH CYRUS!?)
Added stage buttcracks (Even on FD AND MELEE POKEMON STADIUM?!)
Got folks riled up for an Animal Crossing character and let them down (me not included)
ROBOTNIK'S NOT IN THE ****ING GAME, NOT EVEN AS AN ASSIST TROPHY!!!!!!!!!!
Nerfed Jigglypuff a bit too much
The Stage Builder, although neat (and obligatory) leaves much to be desired (I want to make the Balloon Fighter fish come out of the lava!). The textures and backgrounds for it are pretty bland, too, so they all look similar.
There is no explanation behind tripping, not even on the official website!
Removed Marth's third downward Sword Dance strike's spike
NO JAPANESE OPTION MY BONY ***!!!
On the subject of Japanese voices, Jason is still doing Sonic's annoyingly goofy voice
Snack doesn't have any guns... why?
Snack only has one taunt
Some taunts are really dumb/weird (Wolf's side taunt for instance. He just gets ready to barf)
Wolf is in the game
Everything about the SSE (aside from cutscenes and the Great Maze)
No DS connectivity with Pictochat stage
No analog detection with GCN controller's L and R buttons
No downloadable content
Online is (near?) impssible to get to be perfect
Zamus' emergency pistol doesn't charge by itself over time like it's supposed to
You can change to Zamus without FS (with too much difficulty), but you can't change to Samus without FS
Pit and R.O.B were annoyingly random character picks (their game aren't even that good)

With all that said, nothing about it (save for the tiny details about characters) is inferior to Melee.

The good:

Slower speed (More people can keep up now)
Lower hitstun (prevents the first hit meaning the game)
Controller customization
Music
Online play is there
More chars
More than one taunt
Character entrances are great
Super Armor
Every character can do good (But i have yet to see an epic falcon)
Random, Best character in the game

The Bad:
Did they test the characters?...the heck is up with Snake's range? It's inhuman (not complaining about Snake, just did nintendo purposely make Snake with that much range o.O)
No Mewtwo (.......fail nintendo, big fail)
No Isaac (Golden Sun WHICH IS SO BETTER THAN KID ICARUS, Pit -_-)
No Pulse and Minon(We need more than just 1st gen pokemon and a duo character like IC)
No Roy... (He could have been decloned)
Robotnik should be in Green Hill stage as a hazard/background and secret boss in SSE
Tripping (As bad as taking Mewtwo out)
When nerfing characters, they buffed Marth (his buffs > nerfs)

Good:
Speed is better
Awesome music (Bramble Blast, Dedede's Theme)
Melee clones are more "Luigified"
Buffed lower characters (Kirby, Bowser, Luigi, Zelda, Game & Watch, DK, etc.)
Nerfed better characters (Fox, Falco, Sheik, Peach, etc.)
Assist Trophies are a cool addition
Final Smashes are a great original concept, and help balance some characters
New techniques (crawling, gliding, footstool jumping)
GCN controllers
added back features from 64 (entrances)
actual random button
3 taunts
Online Play
Bigger roster
David Hayter as guest VA
Larger Adventure Mode

Bad:
Online play is BALLS
random tripping
focus on casual audience
the axing of an original moveset (Mewtwo)
lack of new series (Golden Sun and Nazo no Murasamejo could've worked great)
12 to 26 characters is much better than 26-39, despite clones
Lack of Ridley, Bowser Jr., K.Rool, Krystal, and Isaac
Overrepresentation of Kirby, Pokemon, and Star Fox
Underrepresentation of Mario and DK
No new DKC stages, but representation of classic games and crappy bongo spinoffs
Biased on Kirby series (menus look similar, subspace is focused on them, 5 items, more trophies than anyone but Pokemon, etc.)
Nerfing of characters who didn't need to be nerfed (Falcon, Ganondorf, Jigglypuff, etc.)
Overpowering Snake and Meta Knight (Kojima and Sakurai's mascots)
Cloned Final Smashes
No Ryan Drummond as Sonic's VA
repetitive adventure mode, with no Nintendo worlds, and only Mario enemies
Chaingrabbing
Few original bosses
Less ATs
Sakurai focusing on distilling gameplay instead of adding features

Right:

adding characters
adding stages
adding a stage editor
adding wifi
adding pivot grabbing, boost smashing, and other wacky physics stuff
changing characters' attacks so everyone has more than the same 3 kicks over and over

Wrong:

making it possible to do other moves out of an airdodge
dropping Mewtwo
nerfing C. Falcon/Ganondorf
adding ROB
lowering hitstun
tripping

Wow. Good job. Because Cloud is deffinately Nintendo's original character, right? And Sonic NEVER EVER was on a Nintendo system, no sir-e.
[/sarcasm]

There are many good things in Brawl:

- They nerfed characters that needed to be nerfed.
- I love how they integrated all characters and their personalities in SSE.

Things I don't like:

- I guess there should have been a system to grab your opponent toes when he grabs the ledge so you cannot grab it.
All things I quoted I will reason why I do not completely agree:

Certain characters were a little too good, yes, but they heavily nerfed some characters that needed no such thing... *cough* Captain Falcon... They need to stop making characters so **** good, because this is what creates obvious tier lists.

I don't really disagree on the SSE thing, but just a little arguement: when Link sees Mario pick up Zelda's trophy, he runs f*cking fast!

Was there ever a system in SSB where you could grab onto the leg/foot/toes of a character hanging on a ledge? Or is this just your idea?

They did everything right except for the Great Maze.
Heh, the Great Maze...

Under the ground.
Good additions:

-More characters
-More stages
-Better music
-Perfect shielding is actually learnable
-Kirby got buffed
-Coin Launcher replaces that Melee thing.
-Smarter AI
-Online play

Bad
-Attempted to decimate competitive Smash
(--Lower hitstun
--new airdodge (by itself good. With lower hitstun STUPID!)
--removal of L-canceling
--character balance is relatively the same as Melee
--easy, yet devaststating chaingrabs.)
-SSE isn't worth a second playthrough
-SSE took too much development time
-Online blows chunks (lag, no communication, FC#.)
-More glitchy then Melee (lol slight rhyme).
