Lol, lots of people have messaged me saying that they want to do something like this in different parts of the US. I don't have a problem at all, not at all.

Lots of people are going to be holding Brawl tournaments. But Wait, What? is going to be offering the first full professional tournament experience for brawl. This isn't going to be some poorly run tourney in some guy's smelly and hot basement. It's going to be big, for money, and for first bragging rights!

Minor Bump

What do you think of the signature? I made a request to the artwork emporium and a very nice artist made this for me:

Thanks to Dizzynin.

Samus + Naked = Better.

And after playing MP3, her final smash should have been hypermode... oh well. The banner looks nice.

Well, I think if we want this to happen we should advertise in a lot of places. Posters in game stores and stuff. Attracting as many casual people as possible can boost the attendance level significantly. And room won't be an issue; the only problem might be with setups. We'll need lots of those.

Basically, everybody who owns a Wii will need to bring one.

Agreed Rob. Once I get the venue locked down I was going to start on the marketing crusade. It's still really early. More than 3 months away. Once I have a venue to advertise, there'll be fliers up at ASU, stores, etc...

I can put stuff up at ASU West, if you'd like. Unless you've got that covered somehow. Also I can get some high school players to come.

I got an SD card, not like I don't think you guys don't, but we can use that to transfer data if one person's Wii doesn't have the game or not everything unlocked by then.

The data of the winner of Race to the Finish is going to be used for the tourney. Should I rephrase the first post? Was it confusing? (Not sarcastic, actually want to know)

Also, we're going to need to find ways to secure the Wiis. They're pretty small and easy to walk off with, and even without they cords they would sell nicely. Or somebody would just keep them and buy the cords on their own.

And the remotes are incredibly easy to walk away with... they would fit neatly into a pocket alongside a cellphone or something, and you would never notice until afterwards.

Normally I wouldn't even think of bringing this up, but if the event is big and has a lot of fresh faces, that means a lot of people none of us know. That means no accountability, and that means higher risk.

Agreed.

One solution for the wiimotes could be that Alt. keeps them all inside a box/back pack that he (or someone trust worthy) is near/around at all times. This may be a problem because if someone decides to steel the bag/box itself...then we're out 20+ wiimotes...not good.

Another solution could go like this --- if you bring a wiimote...keep track of it. Treat it as if it were your own GC controller. Everyone needs to be responsible for their own stuff, especially during a tourny.

ALSO - I'm not sure if this will work, but would it be possible to use a single wiimote to turn on all the consoles, one by one? If this is the case, than Alt only needs to have one or 2 "master" wiimotes to run the tourny. If this is NOT the case...obviously, it won't work out that way.

Good point Rob.

The Wii's will be of great value. So I will make a formal announcement at the tournament that nobody is to be messing with (especially not disconnecting) the Wii's. If anyone sees anyone else doing it, turn them in. The TV's are going to be used pretty fully, so I don't expect any of them to be left unattended for any long amount of time.

But what I will likely do is make labels for the Wii's noting who they belong to. Alicia already said that she wants to make name tags for everyone. (Isn't she cool like that) So if anyone sees somebody messing with tournament devices, but your head in and make sure the stuff belongs to them. If everyone keeps half an eye out, then it'll all be okay.

About Wiimotes- I'll just use one. Gamecube controllers only to play with. No Wiimotes. Of course brawl isn't out yet, but I anticipate not needing a Wiimote once the game is on. Just like using a Wii for Melee. If that is the case, then it'll all work out nicely.

Well, it's just that we'll be in a crowded convention center. Somebody could throw out any number of excuses to passersby and be happily ignored, and it doesn't matter what they do. If you saw somebody unplugging a Wii and then putting it in their backpack, and they just did it in the middle of a large crowd, you wouldn't assume they were trying to steal it. You'd think: hey look, there's a guy unplugging his console from the TV. Alright.

The volunteers and tournament directors wouldn't ignore it, but most people would just assume there was nothing fishy happening.

My suggestion is to appoint a bunch of our AZ regulars as console watchdogs. If everybody has a nametag and the Wiis have tape with corresponding names on them, then the volunteers will just keep on the lookout for people unplugging stuff. If somebody starts trying to unplug a Wii, these people are appointed the responsibility of stopping them to make sure things check out. The announcement would also help so everybody would keep an eye out, just in case volunteers who look for that sort of thing don't miss out.

Also, just to make sure there can't be any inconspicuous Wii snatching, I think we could duct tape Wiis to the top of each television. That makes it pretty much impossible to try and

I know I'm seeming a little draconian about it, but really, I just don't want to see some guy come to the event only to walk away minus a multi-hundred dollar console. Especially when all it takes to prevent it is a little bit of effort. And of course, I wouldn't be saying this if the event was people we know; but if we put up fliers and advertise and it's for this brand new, incredibly popular game... well, we're certain to see new faces. And there just might be jerks who see this kind of thing as an opportunity to steal ****.

It's pretty nice that we won't be using memory cards though; those are just too **** small to keep track of.

Also: because the event is going to be big, and we're going to see new faces and names and people won't know or care about the rules we set up, I think we'll need to have volunteers patrolling the venue. There are tournament goers who don't even know the rules at particular events; I thinking having official staff members who know the rules and are easily distinguishable could really help out. In between their matches--assuming they entered the tourney--they could just sort of patrol the floor and make sure nobody was playing on a banned stage or with improper settings. They'd have distinctive badges or whatever so people could ask questions about rules and settings, and they would be on the lookout for suspicious Wii-snatchers.

Having the rules posted around the venue would help as well. That way nobody can use the excuse: "I didn't know."

This tourney is going to be pretty interesting, both in area of management and competition. I do hope the tourney is organize and actually happens. No one wants to pull another oc3.........hahaha...but seriously, if Dan is managing it then i have no worries. Do your thing Dan the Man.

Hah, thanks for the words, Oscar.

Your logic is undeniable, as usual, Rob. I'm willing to bet that Sam would want to be a designated "enforcer". Especially if I gave him a name tag that said "enforcer".

Security will have to be of high priority at the event. The phoenix convention center has security guards that you can rent out. (For a rather reasonable rate too) They wouldn't be able to help out with game settings, but I could rent one out and tell him "Absolutely nobody but me is to be disconnecting or taking anything from the setups" And it'd be his job just to patrol around and stuff.

On that note, the Phx Convention Center is rather slow at responding to emails. I'm going to have to be more assertive pretty soon here. And by that I mean making phone calls. :)

I can see Dan being like the new nealdt for Brawl tournies. Plus you could make a case that they look somewhat similar. Although you could make a case for anyone really, like for example B-Will always gets me and Dan mixed up lol.

Possible venue???

The Glendale Recreation and Aquatics center (located on 57th Avenue and Union Hills rd), they have some decent sized rooms that can be rented out from about $20 to $40+ an hour (depending on the size). Now, I'm not sure how that fairs against the prices at the Phoenix Convention Center, but I wanted to give you the heads up anyways.

here's a website if you want more info

hope it helps

Sorry if I sounded dismissive. The stupid boards have been acting up all day. I wrote a longer response 3 times but it disappeared magically each time. I'll look into any possibility. Thanks for the suggestion.

OMG, this is such a great concept for a tournament. I'm in, definately.

I'll be running Mia.

Cause she'll be in Brawl.

...you're not going to contradict me, now, are you? *hides chainsaw*

Well, if not, I'll try my hand with Snake or Samus. Most likely Snake, but you never know. I'll try my best to be there.

I don't play Yoshi.

That is the first time I picked the guy up. It's sad really. Didn't I beat you with Bowser? And DK? I believe it was a three stock. Good day, sir.
