Hahah! Nickelcade would not be the prime choice for tournaments. Fests, could probably pull that off (weekly Tuesday night smash fest, anyone?). Tournaments need a lot more room than Nickelcade could provide. It'd be a good roomy venue that I'd get for the monthlies. This weekend can be considered a "trial" of how things go, and if I'll need to break these things up (like, every other week flips between teams and singles, or maybe one week Melee, next PM, then Brawl, then off a week for my own sanity. Only if this doesn't work out as I'm anticipating).

Lists based on tourny results are the ONLY way to have any sort of rankings whatsoever.

Player 6 might be better than Players 1-5, but if Player 6 never shows up to tournaments....what do Players 1-5 care? They don't have to worry about him ever being in the bracket so he's irrelevant.

Edit: Tsu start hosting monthlies at NickelCade? Good for business and good for the scene.
I never said they shouldn't be based off tournament results and I agree you can't have rankings without them. And I also agree with you that someone inactive shouldn't be in the rankings because they never show up. I said solely off rankings, and I mostly just posted that cause support resorted to calling PC a douche and getting defensive about it while ignoring the valid points PC made. PC shows up to events and does well and anyone familiar enough with the scene would put him easily in the top five. So that's what I meant by that being an example of rankings solely on results not being accurate. I agree they are usually a pretty good indicator of what they should be, but I don't think they should be the only factor going into a ranking. Especially considering there have only been 4-5 melee tournaments in the past year. Results should play a bigger role only once there are consistent tournaments over a considerable amount of time. Even then though there are other things that might have to be taken into account that could affect the accuracy of results-only rankings like if the 5th place only lost to 1st and 2nd and might be a better player than who placed 3rd and maybe they even beat them earlier in the tourney before getting bracket *****.

The crew battle should happen though, that would be awesome. I think that would be more exciting than the actual tournament.

Kinda are facts! Please read the pervious posts before being a douche. K thanks
Your "**Based off tourney placing" isn't even on the same post that I quoted. It was on the a different post listing PM players only. You can assume other people will take that to apply for all of your future posts. And your tournament isn't the only one with Melee. I've missed both Melee tournaments you hosted for various reasons, but in the other two previous Melee tournaments, I placed in the 3rd and 4th*.
PC is definitely up there but I guess he hasn't entered a tournament recently to show it in that way. Yaz is a super big wild card for both PM and (I think?) Melee
I entered the Cafeneio tournament (and this is definitely considered recent), and got sent to loser's by Jekyll. I beat Tuesday by a good margin, but then had to leave early so I forfeited my match to Yaz, *getting 4th. Tsuteto ended up letting Tuesday play in my place, and Yaz, despite playing Peach, lost to Tuesday's ICs. Yaz was the highest placing Utah Melee player at last year's Salt Fest, so I'm sure he would have won if it wasn't for his rust (although that's just me john'ing for him). Who knows how my match against Yaz could have went, but my main counters his, so especially given the circumstances, there was a good chance I could have won. Then I would just have to play dumb-Sheik against Jekyll (which I don't like doing), since that worked really well against Jekyll earlier (I just switched to dumb-Sheik way too late in the previous set to make a full comeback XD).
BTW, Yaz is definitely better at Melee than P:M, ATM. He barely got into P:M recently, so that's why, but he seems to really like it, so I'm expecting him to get up there in the rankings soon.

PC is obviously a top 5 Melee/PM player. Tournament results probably back this up.

Im pretty sure Support didn't take into account the Kafenio tournaments, if he did his rankings would be different.

Bracket **** rarely happens outside of Regionals/Nationals and if it does happen its not gonna happen every tournament, if you're good as you think/say you are you'll place where you should most of the time.

Also, just because someone wins the head to head matchup with someone does not automatically make them a better player. take ISee for example, he beat Chris a couple of times. Ice Climbers wreck Sonic. Me and you beat Samson whenever we play him pretty handily. Is that bracket ****? Nah. Does that mean Samson is a better player than us because he beats the "best" player? Nah. That's why tournament data is the only solution, it doesn't lie, it isn't biased, it is what it is and you cant argue with it. Also the fact that tournament play is everyones highest level. Someone might be an amazing player, but if they cant perform when the pressures on it doesn't matter, they're irrelevant.

I don't belong on any list. Tomacawk, Jekyll, PC, Yaz, and X are all better than me. Kenny, Sinz, Meleeruler, and maybe someone else idk could also be, but those other 5 are objectively better.

And for the record, PC, our set was 2-1=P

These guys just seem to think I'm good because I'm more active up North.

It's relevant because you're posting stuff to make it seem like it's fact, despite it just being based on a limited scope of data.
I was posting stuff based off tourney placings alone. In my head its facts, in yours it's not. We have different opinions on what should define skill. But Marz is right you can be good all you want but if you dont go to tourneys theb how are people to justify that you are? Word of Mouth only goes so far. Regardless of what it is everyone knows who is good who isn't. So henceforth, it's irrelevant, we should all get hype for this weekend!

P.S. I apologize for calling you a douche.

So I got one of my old League of Legends partners from Provo to pick up Melee! He has a Gamecube but needs a game. If anybody in that area has one for sale PM me. He'll be at the tourney on Sat. I also found out I don't go to San Diego till weekend after next so Clokwork and I will be there as well!

Let's just ignore the list for top players atm. After Saturday, we'll most definitely have stuff to talk about.

hey, everyone! i'm new to smashboards, so i hope i'm posting this in the right thread (also, are all the utah people just supposed to add on to this one giant thread as opposed to starting a new thread?). anyway, i live around byu (provo) and have started playing smash again with my roommates and friends, and we're looking to find other smashers in the area.

on friday, march 21st (8pm to whenever), we reserved the FLAC (foreign language activity commons) which is room B003 of the JFSB (joseph f smith building) at byu to play smash. we have one wii u which will probably be set up to play project m, a wii which will be set up to play melee, another wii which will be set up for 64, and a gamecube for a backup melee system. and as a fyi, melee will probably be set up with hitboxes turned on. depending on who shows up to play, we may switch things up if people really want to play something else :-p. anyway, we'd love to meet other smashers in the area, so feel free to join us. thanks!

p.s. this is byoc since we don't have enough controllers :-p.

Good to see a new Smasher in the community. For your first question: yes, this thread is to talk about all things happening in Utah relating to Smash (and to socialize with other people in the scene in general). If you host a tournament, you can make a thread (in its appropriate section, which you can research for yourself to know where it should be) and post about it here, but if you host just a casual get-together, then don't make a thread, and just mention the details here like you already have.

Also, if you don't already know, there's a big tournament being held this Saturday, March 22, relatively close to you. You can find further details HERE. Make sure to mark yourself as going if you plan to, and invite your friends to mark it as well, since if we get 80 people marked as going, the venue fee will be $5 cheaper. (And I just realized that if everyone on the "maybe" list is marked as "going", we'll already be at 80... <_<)

Also, if you are going to run P:M on a system, don't do it on a Wii U, since that won't allow GameCube controllers, which the majority of players use. Wii U's are just bad to use for any current version of Smash in general, for the same reason.

I know this.
Well, your lists only seem to reflect your tournaments.
