You left yourself off!

This was the point I was disagreeing with. Everything else you said I mostly agree with, however. I did mention that tournament results are used as a reference.
You said they were used as "a mere reference." Of course, the semantical argument can start, but it's clear your entire argument was "tournament results aren't as important as subjective analysis."

Though my argument carries over to your Spike vs Jamal example. Obviously Jamal has entered a lot of tournaments and Spike has entered virtually none. I don't care if it isn't fair or not, but I'd still think that Spike is better than Jamal (hypothetically; I used to think Spike>Jamal 1-2 months ago but now I wouldn't be able to make a judgment call). Of course there is gray area. Usually we use tournament results to differentiate between those gray areas, but when there isn't tournament results for Spike, that doesn't mean we automatically give the benefit to the person who goes to tournaments. This is a mentality that a lot of you have: reward those people that enter tournaments. Of course there are various valid reasons to do so, but keep in mind that that shows bias to how you're comparing Spike and Jamal. I wouldn't disagree with ranking Jamal over Spike, but at the same time I wouldn't agree that Jamal is better than Spike at playing the game. Does that make sense?
If Spike is obviously better than Jamal, then we're not going to rank Jamal higher because he's entered tournaments. On the other hand, when there's a grey area (Jamal and Spike are close in skill level, and I'd wager Jamal is better), you have nothing to fall back on but tournament results.

In other words, when there aren't tournament results for a player, he doesn't get ranked. There are rare exceptions to this (for example, when Mitch came it was pretty clear he was better than everyone, so we rank him first), but in the case of Spike vs. Jamal, it's not clear who is better, and so we place Jamal higher due to his tournament record.

This is especially important when trying to figure out who is better amongst the worse players. It's difficult to place Rohan above Carl since they're about equal in skill and both have no tournament record. And this is why I said "meaningful rankings past top 4." It's hard to accurately assess who is better between Jamal, Clay, and Spike, because they're all close in skill and there aren't any tournament results which suggest who is the best player.

I wouldn't place myself above Carl either, although the one tournament we faced each other I beat him, but that's not enough justification, or simply beating him in a crew battle.
Going on a match to match basis though, I think I have a slight edge.
Same deal with Sharif.

Basically, I feel confident I could beat both of them in a real tournament, but I'd actually have to consistently to place myself above them.
Dean is definitely better than me though.

My main argument was that you don't need tournament results to have meaningful rankings. I did throw in that my personal belief is that "direct insight" is more important than tournament results, but that was far from my main argument. In any case, I get the feeling we are arguing the same point anyways.

This summer I'm going to go back to Houston and **** sauce in the Houston melee scene. Then I'm going to come back after summer and **** sauce in Austin. Beware.

Am I allowed? lol

Depending on when I get back from Houston on Sunday it should be fine for me. I think I'll probably be back late afternoon or early evening.

Jake, I'll see what I can do, but I'm probably gonna be busy. Only reason I'm there is for my sister's graduation from Rice. Kal, I take that as a yes. :)

I'd be happy to help, but I have a final that I need to study for, but i'll see if i can write up a mini guide pretty soon (Saturday maybe.)

Definitely worth it if you haven't modded your Wii at all (free games sound good?)

Also, it seems like i'll be in Austin for the summer for anyone who wants someone to play. I'm a bit of a scrub, but at least I'm someone to play~

All right douche bags, smash fest tonight at my place at 6:00 PM. I have one TV that doesn't lag, so I expect whoever's coming to bring the remaining TVs.

Well Matt, I'm afraid my Luigi is just that much better than ur Jiggs.
:p

Dean beat me in a Luigi ditto, I'm still tortured by that!
But I also did a successful manzana combo.

Don't post the one where Rohan beats me! That never happened!
I'm about to upload a sh**load of vids from that smashfest in my dorm on my YT account and that's one of them. Gotta upload it now that it's been so hyped up. I mean it's just so amazing that this relative unknown, Brown Link, beat MT's jigglypuff, which is at least the 2nd best jiggs in TX. :p

Also uploading crew battles and yu/jf friendlies from last meeting on Smash Club YT account.

hiiiiiiiiiiiii
OMG Reqy just posted in our thread! That's almost as awesome as Scar posting in our thread that one time.

Just made a huge discovery.

I know why Michel is so ****ing good at this game.

Think about it.

Best player on the world: Mango

And now think about Michel's #1 catch phrase ever.

Cookies to whoever makes the connection.

Any UT smashers in Houston this summer?
I hope we can meet up at a tourney in Houston or even someone's house so we can play, b/c I don't go back to "suck" status when I get back from break =/

Basically you're just going to be downloading a file pack that goes onto an SD card, then opening up the files from the Wii menu. To get the right file pack for you though, I'll need to know what version of the system menu you're on (eg. 4.2, 3.1, etc). It should say in the menu somewhere.

From there on, you'll just be downloading more stuff (the USB loader/GC loader etc.) and putting it on. I can direct you to the right links after you get homebrew in.

@Kal
What did you need help with again? The program I used to extract the iso was gcrev (gcrebuilder). I can't exactly remember where I found it, or what version it is (as my computer with all that stuff is still down), but a quick google search came up with this download link: http://www.romhacking.net/utils/619/
I'm pretty sure you can extract the iso with gctool as well though.

After I extracted the iso, I took all the files I wanted and just copy-pasted them into the iso folder. I had changed all the names of the files going to be copied to the originals (eg.Twilight LINK]lknrnr ->lknrbr) so I would get a replacement confirmation to make sure I was doing it right (and it makes it easier).

After that, I used gcrev to rebuild the iso. It also scrubs the extra junk so it becomes a smaller sized-iso. IMG burned a disc and I was good to go.

As for the files, I just took them from the Melee hacks thread or looked at Steelia's site here: http://illusorylabyrinth.wordpress.com/

There was a directory of a ton of textures, but I can't seem to find it. Once I get back in Austin and replace my power supply on my computer I'll be able to link it for you.

You guys suck at riddles.

Everyone knows that Michel's catch phrase is "mang". That's like 80% of "Mango". So that is obviously where he derives his skill level from.
