I was supposed to be actually involved on this board when the 3DS version came out, but I suppose later is better than never (not that I need to support Shulk, we already have awesome players like Jerm and Trela for that.) so here is a few of the matches I've had.

Le Troof Vs Goof/Nero :4bowser: - Crazy I found a S@X player on For Glory. Blast to play, even if I only won one match.

Derbear Vs Goof/Nero:4pikachu:

2.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS-esVo06aw

Random For Glory guy "Manny" Vs Goof/Nero:4falco:

Just for silliness:

Any tips/critiques anyone has are welcomed. Sorry about not having 1080p, my computer can only handle 720p60.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on how to get better with Shulk.

Stop using USmash
. Use Utilt instead. It allows for more strings/combos and is quicker whereas USmash doesn't have side effects (like it doesn't have a vacuum effect to pull opponents in) to make it better and has so much ending lag.

Learn what each of the Monado Arts do. Then think about what you want to do before you select one. Jump for instance makes you take more damage, but your jump and fall speed are increased. So starting a match with Jump doesn't make too much sense unless you've got something mind that requires the pros from Jump. Likewise, using Defense at around 69% doesn't make too much sense either. Smash when the opponent is 39% doesn't make sense either.

Back Slash should be rarely used to fall quickly. If you want to get down to the ground quick, press/hold Down on your controller. That's Fast Falling.

You have an addiction to rolling. Try to do spot dodges on the ground instead. Or just blocking. There are multiple times where you rolling away after a successful block, when you could've punished instead. Rolling makes more sense when you've got Defense MA because you're decreased mobility.

I'd watch Jerm/Distant Kingdom's videos on youtube. Those videos show what combos/strings there are with Speed and also that UThrow is should be used for combos/strings or until the opponent catches on. DThrow is to kill near an edge with Smash on and they're at 90%ish. If you like Twitch, follow DistantKingdom's channel.

FSmash and DSmash generally aren't good edge guarding tools. The end lag will get you killed more times than it will succeed. I recommend either ledge trumping them or even Vision if you're really close to the edge. Or better yet, when they show a pattern of attacking on get up.

Also, quit using dash attack and Back Slash altogether. Approach with fairs and nairs--much safer options. I noticed that every time you switched Arts, it put you at a disadvantage in the battle, and would get you rekt by better players. Read the Monando Art thread for some advice on that

Looking for advice on how to improve my Shulk. I posted this before already, but got no advice like I wanted. Also, this tournament set I played last Saturday against another Shulk. Technically, I wasn't Shulk this time, but I thought the guy was a worthy opponent and I think he placed around Top 15 out of 42 people:

I'll bite. Watching these one at a time.

vs. :4peach:
Shulk's jab combo connects better against light characters if you delay it a bit (particularly the third hit). Peach was popping out a lot, and I think that'll help. I think that reducing the number of hard read smash attacks is something that every Shulk needs to work on - they feel so satisfying to land, but they're just not worth it outside of specific situations. Go for smashes when you see they're airdodging into the ground or rolling on getup, but don't just throw them out. Try switching to jump mode pretty much every time you get knocked off stage. You can switch during hitstun, so no danger of backslashing to your death, and the increased air mobility and jump height make recovering high almost 100% safe.

vs. :4lucina:
Similar advice re: smash attacks. You had a few this game that you were really just hoping Lucina would run into. You spent a lot of time this match in Vanilla mode. Generally speaking, you want to consistently make use of Jump or Speed to beef up your neutral game, or throw on buster if you're pressuring them well. I like the use of backslash to punish charging shieldbreaker, but I don't know if that's actually safe before she releases it? Try using tilts a bit more in the neutral game. Dtilt is very good for spacing in particular.

vs. :132:
A big part of the ditto is the Monado Art countering game. You should be responding as much to their choice of mode as you are to their moves. Shield hard counters smash (or would've, if your opponent knew how to cancel it when he went off stage) so switch over to Speed when you see that come up. You used this well with Shield vs. Buster on stock 2. I'm noticing here that you barely use Bair at all. You really want to get good with this move, as it's one of Shulk's best kill options outside of gimping. You had a couple times where you threw out Nairs with your back facing him that missed where Bair could've hit.

vs.:4sonic:
Good use of tilts this game. You didn't use Speed mode at all this game which I find important for applying any kind of pressure, but you can see how well my own match versus Sonic went in the post above. You had some trouble dealing with homing attack from the air: the Shulk player commentating my Sonic match said that you can shield this and respond with Up B every time, so try that out. Speaking of Air Slash out of shield; learn it, love it, get free kills. Oh, and work on teching! You didn't manage to tech any of Sonic's down throws, which can be very dangerous against a player who's looking for that. I know it's tough online, but it can be very important.

I don't play Greninja at all, so I'll leave it there. Hope this helps!

Realized that capturing with a phone just leaves the middle of the screen captured in phone-shaped form while the sides are pitch black after I finished recording and uploading the following videos on YT. Regardless I hope they don't get in the way too much in watching the fights. I'm "Melia" Shulk in every single one of these videos:

Starts at 3:10:12, broke out Shulk for grand finals and had a **** load of fun. I did a lot of stupid stuff on purpose but I don't discourage critique. The game on Orbital in specific was extremely fun.

Edit: Oh,and there's quite a bit of swearing. I can't tell if it's just on my end, but the stream also seems to be skipping frames.

This match is from Winners round 3 of the Smash 4 Worldwide Online Tournament.

Another great video, Jerm! Very educational, but also really fun to watch.
I usually don't watch a lot of Smash videos, but your combo videos (and the Shulk guide) got me hooked.
Great commenting, and the slow-motion highlights at the end were brilliant.

Dope games, I find the Captain Falcon MU to be quite difficult for Shulk when speed art is unavailable. Wish I could play you with no lag!! Was the venue in a church? lol

Oh wow this is a nice find. The question is if it's reliable enough for us Shulks to consistently use it against these types of recoveries.

Indeed, I'm testing it with more characters as I'm playing in FG, so far Captain Falcon's up b recovery falls for it too.

According to @Lavani , Kirby's up B animation isn't really done in that video so if you manage to push him off stage, he'll enter helpless state. Some other recoveries are like this too

Yeah. You can push the kirby off normally by just walking or running into him, but it doesn't have enough pushing power to get the kirby far enough from the ledge. I wonder if the Dair gives Shulk enough pushing power or just the jumping into the opponent.

Yep. If you look closely you can see that Shulk just lands with d-air while conserving a bit of his forward momentum, causing him to slide along the ground and send Kirby over the edge.

After that, things just weren't the same for that little puff ball.

Attention fellow Bronados/ Branadas. For the next instalment of the 'Really Feelin' It' combo video series I want to include you guys-the community! Just PM me if you are able to record some clips (I will only accept high quality video recordings e.g gameplay captured with a capture card). I will look around this thread as well to see what I can find!

Edit: I will most likely be looking for clips all of February and I want to have Really Feelin' It 5 out by early March.

Edit** Also, when you guys send me the clips please try and record it without the background music so that I can throw some sexy beats over top :p And no Apex today whaaaaaat! This years Apex is nothing but craziness xD

not sure if you're including matches with customs but...http://www.twitch.tv/hiyashaya/b/621026112
at 3:36:29 Sync's had a nice one that leads to a ko
at 3:40:21 I have a crazy 101% combo (; leads to a ko
at 3:50:59 I have a nice 0-109%
at 3:54:38 Sync has a good one
at 4:03:16 Sync has another good one
at 4:19:44 Sync has a great 0-74

Also have a (imo) highly entertaining custom sets between two houston players, shulk v shulk: Sync and KJ (me)
http://www.twitch.tv/hiyashaya/b/621026112 starts at 3:03:37, we dittoed for about 2 hours ;P
Customs were hyper monado, advancing airslash, power vision, and back slash charge(? not sure, the one with superarmor)
hmm seems like the stream glitched out for a little bit, actually starts at 3:05:24

The first matches start off pretty meh...but about 30 mins in things kick up to high gear. For example I think 4:19:43 was a pretty entertaining match

can anybody confirm if 4:09:08 was a monado cancel? seemed like it but im no shulk main so not sure ;/

Twitch destroys my computer with lag, so I can't really comment on the above videos. Sorry to just throw out videos without input from my end. Here's some from last Saturday, in chronological order. Turn off the volume if it desyncs; the laptop was doing multiple things, and this happens in some of the fights I'm posting all around.

vs. :rosalina:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffVN3S7sm_w&t=2m25s - I don't know what possessed me to pick Battlefield against Rosalina. I was really sick of Smashville. I honestly think Shulk is a good counter to Rosie.

vs. :4link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhxbsClzpow&t=8m23s - I was in this guy's head by this point, as he had yet to take a stock off me. Maybe not the best showcase, but it felt good.

vs. :rosalina:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fInkA5I9mGY&t=3m55s - Rematch against the guy from the first vid. Nothing much to say here, I believed in my (crappy) Shulk. Totally didn't use the Jump art when I should have, that was a slip of the mind. Used fsmash waaaay too much, hoping he'd run into that. He was more patient than I expected. I have to learn not everyone will run into my attacks.

I know people will bring up the lack of arts, but I felt scared in some matches. It's terrible to switch to Buster and eat 40% for nothing. That's a psychological block I need to get over myself.

In what case would you ever take that much damage solely because of Buster? If things get hairy just switch the art off and equip a different one if you have to. You'll have it again after ten seconds anyway. If you get the upper hand within that time frame you're good to go.

Yeah, I need to hit Buster when they get into that 50-60 range. And smash for the endgame. I'm just too afraid the drawbacks will punish me massively. Especially on Smash.

The conclusion of the first game you linked demonstrated that well. I get the anxiety of the art drawbacks, but in that particular situation I don't see where your fear came from. At 5:48 you had Rosalina offstage well into kill percent, in a favorable position for you to close out the game, while being at a relatively very safe percent to use Smash (54%). The f-air edgeguard you got shortly after would have ended the game in fact.

If you're worried about drawbacks so much from Smash or Buster, just don't switch to them until you gain the advantage, with or without the aid of a different art. Like, if you get the opponent offstage or in the air, you can just take the opportunity to switch to either of these arts for your big punishes or kills. Then just deactivate it if it's doing you more harm than good or if you don't think you'll be able to benefit from it while it's active.

Yeah, I have to make a more conscious effort to think about arts instead of just what button to hit next. The Rosalina matchup is probably my least favorite in Smash 4. As I get more familiar with it, I can think more proactively versus re-actively.

SuperDavio, pretty good but one rather large thing. Is it worth the disadvantage at the beginning of the match (switching to the right MA or actually having movement) to do that? NEVER. Those aren't friendly matches and you don't get back the damage you get or the advantage you lose when you do stuff like that. Especially against a damn Rosaluma, losing whatever advantage you possibly think Shulk has over Rosaluma isn't worth the taunt.

Yeah, that was a goofy thing of mine. It was FG butting it's way into my local play.
