I want to use the Highscore feature from older games but in a way that would be of interest to non competitive players. Reaching certain scores would unlock some different stuff, like:
- Different cutscene after a Boss is defeated, which gives some interesting information
- Beating the highest score before defeating the Final Boss unlocks the True Final Boss
- A new item/move is given to the player when a certain score is beaten
- A secret area is unlocked on the world map if a certain score is beaten
Players obtain score by defeating enemies, clearing a stage in less time, taking less damage in a stage, performing an specific feat, etc. The scores on the Highscore board would be quite high when compared to the usual base game scores from old games, which would require actual skilled play in order to be beaten. The high numbers would also incentive the player to try harder and try to find a way to beat the stage more efficiently. The more competitive players could also share their final score once they beat the game in order to see which player performed better in the game, this way people could make an online leaderboard to see who's the best player, like how people try to speedrun games, but this time they're playing for the highest score.
I also came up with a few ways to avoid the score feature being exploited:
- Once a stage is beaten, the player can not play it again in the same run. That way people can't farm for score, making them need to actually get better for higher scores.
- Losing all your lives would penalize the player, taking away a certain amount of their score.
What do you guys think? Is there something you recommend me changing, removing or adding?
