Now that I'm thinking about it, which characters will actually appear in the movie? Yoshi seems very likely to appear, but could DK or Wario show up?

Great, now I can't stop considering all the different variables in this movie... :bobomb:

They'll show up at the end for the obligatory dance party scene set to a terrible pop song.

jessie eisenberg's dr. eggman

also a scene where samus checks her email to set up sequels
Except he starts out bald but grows a giant mustache while in jail.

They'll show up at the end for the obligatory dance party scene set to a terrible pop song.
I hope animated movies start bucking that trend.

If I had to rank the which characters had the best chance of appearing it'd be

:ultmario::ultluigi::ultpeach::ultbowser: 100%
You literally need them for the movie.

:ultyoshi: 98%
He's got a huge chance of appearing, but Illumination could decide to be stupid...

:ultbowserjr::ultlarry::ultroy2::ultwendy::ultiggy::ultmorton::ultlemmy::ultludwig::ultdaisy::ultrosalina: 70%
It'd be cool, but I wouldn't count on it.

:ultwario::ultdk::ultdiddy: Waluigi 47%
Maybe a cameo or a reference.

Anyone else
lol

:ultpiranha:
He appears after the credits to set up the Mario cinematic universe.

Don't forget Toads. They're going to be in.
Toadsworth and Toadette, seem like low-maybes.

And once the universe is established, Smash Bros. is just its version of The Avengers.

rock pikmin
i mean richter has one difference, why not make it for this one too?
Rock Pikmin requires a new model, animation, and physics...Holy Water being Aura Damage instead of Flame Damage is an easy change..even changing Chrom's Up Special to be Ike's with slight differences is easier then giving Alph Rock Pikmin just to make him a little different enough to be an Echo Fighter instead of an Alternate Costume.

Not to mention, every single one of Olimar's animations still works fine for Alph, this wouldn't be the case for most of the other Echo Fighters that have more distinct differences in their personalities and styles then Olimar and Alph do.
In games where there's not a lot of voice acting, that is fine. Plus he does talk, but only in text so far...
Even in Super Mario Sunshine, a game that did have a lot of voice acting, Yoshi still only said 'Yoshi'.
Also, while not a main game, Super Mario RPG had given Yoshi a unique way of talking, talking like this (Hi, Mario!), which highly implied that he wasn't speaking like Peach, Bowser, Toad, etc talked but rather Mario was just able to understand him..yet for some reason needed Yoshi to be an interepter for the other Yoshies..which implied that he was still saying just 'Yoshi'..or the sound effect equivalent used from Super Mario World to Mario Kart 64..

Funnily enough, Yoshies only being able to say 'Yoshi' even predates Yoshi's Story, being how the Yoshi's talked in Super Mario Adventures, a comic/manga that was in Nintendo Power Magazine between January & December in 1992 before being released on its own in 1993 as a Nintendo Power Catalog order (though I found my copy at a Wal-Mart in 1996) and recently in 2016.

As such, if Illumination features Yoshi and has him just say 'Yoshi' over and over again, its not their fault but rather Nintendo's for making it fairly clearly that Yoshi can only say 'Yoshi' and make other non-descript noises.

Olimar's down taunt hip swivel suspender dance fits the fact that he's a middle aged family man who's going through a midlife crisis.

I wouldn't say it fits the bright-eyed young engineer, Alph.

Olimar is a middle aged man just trying to provide for his family.

I love that.

Yes, but he also speaks intelligibly in games like Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy 2. There's also multiple Yoshis that speak in the Paper Mario games, most notably the Baby Yoshi in the second one. And this is not even including Super Mario Kun which is still running to this day...

So long story short, Yoshi speaks when he needs to in certain games, and I could just as easily see Nintendo allowing him to talk in the movie...

Let's be real, most of us probably haven't even played Pikmin 3.
Pikmin 3 is genuinely one of my favorite Wii U games, I loved playing through it so much that I did it a second time.

It’s why I really hope that Pikmin 4 is a real thing, and not Hey! Pikmin. Pikmin for the Switch would be awesome.

One of my favorite things to do is sequence break with flying Pikmin.

There are ways you can finagle yourself around in Pikmin 3 that allow for some really cool skips, it’s honestly a blast.

Are they really talking or is it just that Mario can understand them? Without it being vocalized, its hard to tell since there have been various cases where characters commented on Yoshi/Yoshies not being able to be understood.
It also doesn't help that an English voice would..honestly..sound a bit odd if they don't voice match Kazumi Totaka.

As for Super Mario-kun..that is a really, really strange manga..the less I see of it, the better..but could still be a case of Mario can just understand Yoshi.

Honestly, would Yoshi just staying the same as always and just saying 'Yoshi' and communicating with pantomime/gestures really be that bad? It'd be a lot better then Minions I'm sure considering its worked fairly well in the games.

Mario has no idea what they're saying, he just guesses and has been very lucky thus far. Source: Mario is my roommate. My phone's camera is broken so I can't show you guys, just take my word for it.

But even if it was a case of only Mario understanding Yoshi, they could still have him verbally speak as internal dialogue between characters isn't a new concept in cinema. And having a voice that doesn't match Kazumi Totaka isn't the end of the world since it's happened before in commercials, OVAs and the cartoon (even if people complain about it, which I don't). I honestly don't know why it's Totaka or bust for some people...

And no, it's not a matter of "only Mario can understand him." It's a matter of "Yoshi speaks this game, Yoshi doesn't speak in this one." Miyamoto always says that there is no continuity between games, and to me this is a point in that ring...

And it worked in the games because they were games focused on gameplay and not dialogue, and even then mostly text (including Sunshine). This isn't a game though. This is a movie.

Star Wars can get away with people understanding droid noises and wookie growls. I'm sure a Mario movie could get away with him understanding Yoshi gibberish.

I meant that little to no speaking and pantomime/gestures has worked phenomonally in movies before as well, so there's no reason it wouldn't work for a character like Yoshi. I mean, Pikachu in the anime and the anime movies very, very rarely gets to speak in a normal sense yet has a distinct personality shown just fine despite only being able to say 'Pi, Pika, Pikachu, and Chu' along with more nondescript noises, along with the Star Wars Droid Sounds/Wookie growls example above. Yoshi would work in a similar fashion. For whatever role Yoshi would get in a Mario movie, this would likely work out just fine..and it'd be a lot better then them possibly screwing up and giving Yoshi a very unfitting voice and/or dialogue that doesn't fit the character.

I don't see many other IPs that made it work like Star Wars, and Illumination ain't proving to be the company to do so, especially with the Minions.

Yoshi isn't a character known to be annoying and weird though, so Yoshi wouldn't work like the minions did..not only would it not fit his character but I very much doubt Nintendo would let it happen.
Whether Yoshi talks or doesn't talk, I'm sure it'll be fine.

What's an "unfitting voice" to you? Because other than Totaka, I know of two other voices.

Female voice actress (including Pikachu's voice)

And SMW cartoon

And even if the latter is the most calm performance, I'd argue it still fits. Like I told Platinum earlier, if he talks a female voice actor is the best case scenario. If he talks he won't sound like Totaka.

Spirits, Pikmin and the Illumination's Mario? Why does all the good talk happen when I'm asleep. ****ing timezones.

What would you say is the hardest Spirit Battle?
Baby Bowser. I've seen his spirit pop up in the shop a few times so I think I'm going to cave in and just buy the damn thing.

Olimar is a middle aged man just trying to provide for his family.

I love that.
And this is why Olimar, IMO, is the greatest Nintendo protagonist.

Is he a hero chosen by the gods? No. Is he an indestructible super soldier? No. Is he an unstoppable cartoon force? No. Olimar is just a middle aged guy with a wife and kids trying to provide for his family, not die (Pikmin) and not lose his job (Pikmin 2). The fact he has these basic, non-altruistic goals makes him a whole lot more relatable than many other protagonists who go out and save the world cos I guess that's what heroes do.

His personality is also reflected in his ship logs from Pikmin and his comments on the various treasures in Pikmin 2. These detail his aspirations, fears and simple opinions on things, giving him an internal monologue of sorts which many silent protagonists otherwise lack (though Olimar ain't silent despite what Smash would have people think - his baritone is glorious).

Finally, the thing I like about Olimar is his abilities or, more accurately, lack of them. He doesn't have any magic powers or OP weaponry. In fact, in terms of canon power levels, he'd probably get stomped (literally) by every other character on the Smash roster. But that's not a bad thing - again, it makes him more relatable.

tl;dr is Olimar da best protagonist

.... though :ultwario: is definitely number two (WA HA HA)

where is all this coming from

Oh of course, the Toads will be the Minions of this movie.
A rather popular Youtuber known as Hbomberguy announced he would do a livestream of a complete playthrough of DK64 half a year ago, a while ago, a transphobic person was given a platform on the UK TV networks to be a sack of ****, out of protest, Hbomberguy decided to make his DK64 stream a charity stream for trans people by donating the money to an organization trying to help trans people. They got Grant Kirkhope, multiple other youtubers and John Romero for some reason to show support. I even saw an American polititian show support for it by tweeting about it
EDIT: OK SO THAT POLITITIAN ACTUALLY JUST WENT ON THE STREAM WHILE I WAS WORKING

Good to know.

Where were you in the story when you stopped, anyway?

We’re talking One Piece?

Why the crap is it called “One Piece,” out of curiosity. xD

(Also if you split it in half, do you get two pieces?)
