I'm not really sure what the 'Smash' part of the Nintendo fanbase really is expecting out of this supposed Direct to be blunt.
We know Joker's coming, so the most we can really hope for is to see him in motion since he apparently wasn't ready to be seen in December.
I'm 50/50 if they're going to show off Brave.
I can't imagine Joker not being out(Or at the very least, close to release) before they tease Brave. If Joker comes out this month(Highly doubtful), or next, I 'could' see a Brave teaser.
We still have an entire 12 months until Feb 2020, the supposed end date of the DLC, we're in the for long haul this cycle.

TBH, I don't even care if we don't get Joker footage. (Though I still definitely want it)
I'm more hoping for:
More Luigi's Mansion 3 footage
More FE: Three Houses footage
A Pikmin 4 announcement (Doubt)
A Pokemon announcement (DOUBT)
Whatever that thing they teased that "Fans want to know about" is. (Sounds more like an E3 kinda thing)
More Ports (PIKMIN 3 PLEASE) [Probably not]
I mean, Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta all released within the span of about 10 months, so it's not like this has never happened before.
How many of you seriously think that they're going to leave that single spot on the stage select screen blank by the end of the DLC cycle?
Considering it looks like there's been a ridiculous amount of time and effort, and forethought, gone into planning the layout of the SSS, and we did get 7 DLC characters last time...
I still expect around the middle of the year they'll announce an extra character who's not part of the fighter pass. There's just no way we're going to have 108 stages+Random+one empty black square.

Either way, having a single blank square would at least look better than having six, like we do now. Though I agree that it would be best if the final square were to be filled in as well.

On top of that, Mewtwo, Lucas and Roy all had Smash movesets to reuse and tweak. They never had to take time to brainstorm how characters would play. They just tweaked a template that was already there.
5 stages and 6 newcomers make take longer than Smash 4's DLC campaign.

I could totally see it happening. Uneven roster/stage select screens happen all the time in fighting games, and people always try to predict how much DLC there's going to based off of it when in actuality those spots were left blank merely because that's just the number of fighters/stages they ended up with.
I guess there's the argument of "why wasn't it centered then", but to that I'd like to point out that base Ultimate is supposed to be a complete game on its own so not having it centered doesn't really make sense anyway.

It definitely will, but we've also been given a cut-off date.
We KNOW Piranha Plant was weeeeeeell into development by the time that he got leaked via Reddit, and the datamines show that Joker and Brave at the very least have very basic ground work down behind the scenes.
Theoretically, depending on how close to being done Joker and Brave are, there really may only be about 3(4) characters left for them to work on+stages.

Let's be honest, DLC was already planned well into Ultimate's development cycle, or else they could have adjusted the stage select screen into a perfect box, they left the room because they knew they'd be using it.

I don't think that blank indicates anything. And even if we do end up getting more stages out of Fighter Pass, they don't have to be attached to a fighter or limited to one.
I do like that Ultimate killed the "Sakurai doesn't think about DLC until the game is finished!" mentality though. As much as I love Sakurai, he's not a saint, he's a business man.
Piranha Plant was in development for a LONG time, and Joker/Brave had very basic data on the disc on launch day. Not only that, but they had their DLC plan roadmapped before the game even came out.
I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I'm just glad that train of thought is dead. Too many valid arguments got shot down
This 'is' true, but it's also unlike Sakurai to not try his hardest to 'center' his menus, the only exception being the DLC section of the 3DS SSS, which is a visual eyesore.
I just think we're either getting a stage ala Miiverse 2.0, or a surprise character/ballot to strike up hype like 6 or so months after release.

...I was just about to make the counterpoint that 103 isn't divisible by 4, but then I realized I was forgetting to take into account the random button. Huh. I guess they could have made a perfect box with the base stage roster.
I could still see them leaving an open space though, since sometimes games just do that.

I don't really care what they show off, they need SOMETHING to sell people on. ****, I'd be happy if all they announced was a release date for the Skullgirls port

Frankly put, to me at the very least, the reason why I've never considered Resident Evil or games like it for Smash is just due to how niche of a market Horror games are in general. The market is incredibly small, and, iirc, they don't even make it into the top 10 best selling game genres.
I don't mean crappy FNaF games or the "OOGA BOOGA BOO!" at your screen kind, I mean stuff like Resident Evil or Silent Hill.
We got Fatal Frame in Smash as an assist trophy, which is a huge start, but the day we get an actual 'horror' rep in Smash will be a very shocking day for me.
Resident Evil is only the highest selling game franchise Capcom owns. More than Mega Man, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter or Devil May Cry. Up until Monster Hunter World was released, Resident Evil 5 had been Capcom's best selling game for nearly ten years. It's still number two. Numbers three, five and six all time for Capcom are also Resident Evil titles. As of 2014 (couldn't find something more recent than that in a quick search) Resident Evil in total has sold more than any of Capcom's other franchises by an incredibly wide margin; it nearly doubles second place (Street Fighter). And this data is from before RE:Revelations 2, RE7 or RE2make were released. (Keep in mind RE7 is now Capcom's fifth highest selling game of all time, and RE2make has officially shipped over 3million in its first week.)
Further, as of the end of 2018 and before RE2make released, Resident Evil has sold 85million, and is the 20th best-selling games franchise of all time.
Here's the list:
Mario/Super Mario
Pokemon
Grand Theft Auto
FIFA
Call of Duty
"Wii" branded games
The Sims
Tetris
Minecraft
Need for Speed
Final Fantasy
Mario Kart
Madden NFL
Sonic the Hedgehog
Wii Sports (because it was packaged with Wiis)
Lego
Assassin's Creed
Pro Evolution Soccer
The Legend of Zelda
Resident Evil
As you'll probably notice, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy and "Wii" are the only franchises in the top twenty represented in Smash. The others are annual sports games, annual action games (GTA, AC), The Sims, Lego, Minecraft, Tetris, GTA and Need for Speed.
Resident Evil is also a multimedia powerhouse with nine motion pictures, comics, manga, books, toys, etc. As a total franchise, Resident Evil has a higher estimated value than Mortal Kombat, Halo, Skylanders, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed and the goddamn Legend of Zelda. It has had bidding wars by console publishers to be system exclusives on five different occasions, with Sony buying the rights to Resident Evil 3, Sega buying the rights to Code Veronica, Nintendo buying the rights to both Resident Evil 0 and REmake and Sony and Nintendo fighting in historic fashion over RE4. When RE:Revelations came exclusively to the still flailing Nintendo 3DS, it was one of the first real system sellers for the console and helped it emerge as a must-own handheld after its price drop.
But yeah. Niche.
Also, thank you Scoliosis Jones
for @'ing me. I love barging in on any RE talk.

I mean, I accept your facts, but I just personally see the horror genre as Niche. The market for actual horror games isn't anywhere near as big for something like Sports/Racing/Platformer/Puzzle games.
I don't deny RE to be a successful series, but the fact that we've only now gotten a legit representation of the entire horror genre in Smash via the Fatal Frame assist to me backs up that the genre of horror is a niche market compared to the other, bigger ones.
In my opinion at least.
Besides Resident Evil, how many "Triple-A" horror franchises are even left? Silent Hill is dead and Evil Within is a whole lot of meh from what I've heard, so Resident Evil is pretty much 'all' there is anymore, no?

I mean, doesn't Resident Evil's success mean it's enough of an exception to join Smash if you're right? Also I thought it was an actual game with Leon doing roundhouse kicks and shooting an RPG at Terminator Wesker

I'm not saying Resident Evil shouldn't be in Smash, this entire convo started because I told Scoliosis the reason I never speculated on a Horror representative was due to the Horror genre of game being relatively niche compared to others.
It's literally just my opinion, and it's not even 'that' wrong with genre juggernauts like Silent Hill being all but dead at this point, leaving Resi kinda alone in the market with no 'real' competition(No, I don't consider crap like FNaF horror).

I mean, what happened with Silent Hill is Konami having no ****ing idea what they were doing for a while and when they had something that looked like it worked, they canned it much to pretty much everyone's dismay
Also while I highly doubt FNAF is really competition, it's still horror and I'd honestly say it's well designed as it knows how to properly use jump scares instead of "Haha you succumbed to the human reflex we got you"

And how many other big budget horror franchises are even left in the current gaming scene?
Fatal Frame hasn't had a game going on 5 years now.
Clock Tower is old and very dead.
The Evil Within and its sequel got a whole bunch of "Ehhhhh?" from what I heard.
I know there's some game with a night vision camera I'm forgetting but I think that's old as dirt by now.
Resi kinda stands alone as the only 'real' horror game nowadays.
And, I really 'hate' FNaF, but that's it's own story. The last thing I'd call it is having "Properly used jumpscares(Granted, I don't find LOUD AND NOISY jumpscares to be scary, if you want GOOD jumpscares, you do the silent ones like in Ju-On).

I'm not disagreeing that there's not many active big names, it's just that I feel the horror is getting what classic video games got, corporations have arbitrarily decided there's no money to be made off of it and the people who'd actually buy it are left waiting for something new, which is the story of 2D games and as of Hat in Time possibly 3D ones.
