The N64 was an odd duck because it was hard to code for in comparison to disc-based consoles, it had a weird controller they had to design games around using, and developers were still in the early stages of figuring out how to make 3D games work.
The N64 has the smallest number of games for any of Nintendo's home consoles for a reason. As a result of all these negatives, Nintendo played it safe with their first party titles-- essentially making 3D versions of already existing properties like Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, etc.-- while most of the interesting third party titles moved to Playstation.
It's why I don't have much N64 nostalgia. All the concepts that came to the console were better executed on the Gamecube.
