Reaction to a character is really dependent on context
Isabelle got it badly in some quarters cos the direct was delayed and people's expectations were going haywire
Meanwhile Chrom could have got it worse, but it helped him a lot that he was revealed in a direct that also revealed 2 Castlevania characters, Dark Samus, K Rool and a whole lot more

Very good, although I would have had the Smash end screen hit at the exact moment of the last beat of the song.

I don't think a Direct is coming.

i find this hard to believe when they still need to show off:

• joker's tagline, trailer, and gameplay demo
• joker's female skin
• 3.0.0 additions (home run/stage builder)
• mii costume montage (we know these are coming from leaked price listings)
• at this point while there's still some reasonable time left before e3, probably erdrick and his gameplay demo

they shadow-dropped piranha plant, but that was because we'd already seen him and there was nothing else added in 2.0.0 save for balance updates and small things like multiplayer spirit board

man i didn't know **** about cloud or ff in general but when he was added i was hyped af because he looks so damn cool

also it's pretty ****ing rad to have an ff character in smash just because of legacy ngl

In my case it happened with Duck Hunt Dog.

I actually liked that reveal a lot. I already knew Cloud because of Projared and Kingdom Hearts.

You mean two characters that a lot of people were really super hyped for? I admit I was in a different corner of the internet when they debuted so I probably had a very different experience with them. But they were only characters people started hating after they came out, from my perspective.

Both of them has loud detractors for being "not Nintendo" and "too sexy/niche for Smash" respectively. But in the end, they both brought more hype than salt.

I imagine same would happen if Erdrick gets revealed.

Cloud is the first reveal that I can remember watching the direct for live and going insane levels of hype. Even if the FF representation is **** because of Square, it still will never go away for me that ****ing CLOUD STRIFE is in the game. I really hope the DLC brings along more characters like Cloud and Joker instead of a character more predictable like Banjo or Steve that, well cool as hell, won’t give me that absolute mind**** while watching the trailer. (That’s way I really, really don’t want both Banjo AND Steve. That would mean only one character is left to predict, assuming Erdrick gets in.)

The best reveal for me was Megaman.
That one literally made me the person invested in gaming I am today.

The only thing I don’t like about Bayonetta is that she gets to use guns and Snake doesn’t. Seriously, I never use Snake’s grenade, but I used his tranq all the time in Project M.

In fairness is his own character.

Though to at least was pushed hard enough over the line so you wouldn't feel like an ******* for buying him.

Never bought Though. Becasue at the time I was so pissed. Not at But by just in general.

I bought 'em all. They all gave me something new for Smash 4 even if I stopped picking them after a while.

As disappointing as Corrin was, I was still pretty hyped because:
1) I'm a Fire Emblem fan and I was interested in Fates
2) I liked how they played from what I was watching.

The only thing I don’t like about Bayonetta is that she gets to use guns and Snake doesn’t. Seriously, I never use Snake’s grenade, but I used his tranq all the time in Project M.

I'm okay with it. Snake's whole thing in Smash is using heavy weaponry, I wouldn't change grenades for a Paralyzer knock-off, as annoying as they can be.

we all tend to forget that our little echo chamber doesn't seem to reflect how characters are actually received

like just by bouncing between here, gfaqs (yeah yeah i know), and reddit, the reception to isabelle was heavily varied from "she stole isaac's spot" levels of salt to "holy **** this is the best character reveal" levels of happiness. or when bayo was revealed the reddit smash community had a large "meh" response but tumblr ****ing exploded in hype

subjectivity just be like that, i know, but don't think that you know how these character picks are gonna be received outside of your own personal smash community that you frequent because i guarantee you there's a lot of people who are gonna love that character

To date, the most hype reveal for me was PAC-MAN. It always felt odd to not have him in Brawl. So when it was announced that Bandai Namco would be working on Smash 4, I got pretty hopeful,

When he got revealed at E3 2014, I screamed.

The Smash 4 character I was most hyped for was easily Mewtwo. Ultimate is tough, but I’d have to say Simon/Richter, just because that trailer was sooooo amazing.

Why? We have a huge update and a character reveal all dropping in April! Why wouldn’t there be a direct for it?

Outside of Joker, Home Run Contest, and Stage Builder, I don't think there's gonna be anything too shocking in 3.0.0. I don't think the previously mentioned 3 things are enough to warrant a 10-to-15 minute presentation, either. E3 is also just around the corner, it makes way more sense to hold off on Erdrick for then IMO.

Also, I don't think we're seeing Joker until the end of the month. Atlus has yet to formally reveal P5R, which means the new girl who is an alt for Joker's role isn't supposed to be known yet. I don't think Nintendo is gonna reveal info about an Atlus project that probably isn't coming to their system before Atlus can.

I really loved every reveal for Smash 4.
At first I had doubts about Piranha Plant, but ended liking it a lot.

The best Ultimate reveals for me were Richter, Ridley, K.Rool, Dark Samus and Ken.

If we”re talking Ultimate reveals? Easily the veterans reveal. For newcomers, probably K. Rool just because it was so surreal seeing him in game after so many years and years of people talking about how he’d be.

The colours probably had an effect on Goth's reaction too.

Outside of the internet, I would probably never know someone hated a character in the roster.

100% agreed. I really wish they would represent more through PAC-MAN’s history as opposed to the miscellaneous 80’s Namco games.

I mean, that’s a valid argument, but Joker is still being released during April. And it would be weird to just drop an update that adds whole entire modes without some sort of announcement

Pac-Man was close to Megaman yeah.
But tbf, I can't say that Pac-Man's reveal was as huge as MegaMan's since the latter is literally the reason I am even on the internet.

Eeeeehhhhh maybe? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I personally just don't see it happening when E3 is that close at that point.

I would love to be wrong, as I enjoy Directs a ton and getting one more before E3 would be nice.

the character i was most hyped for in ultimate was probably inkling tbh. i didn't really particularly care about any of the other newcomers besides like isabelle, incin, and joker because i don't really care about them but they were all good additions

He loves Animal Crossing, and was hoping both for a new title and her in Smash.

For reference, they made an 18 minute direct out of mii costumes, a new stage, and two DLC characters.

They also made a 40 minute direct talking about online mode options, deconfirmations, and spirits.

A direct is looking feasible given how long they typically present their content.
