They weren't when I was growing up.

Our only participation rewards were the orange slices the team mom would bring for half time.

Honest answer?
  1. Because human beings are sexual by their very nature. We're hard coded to want to reproduce and make intimate connections.
  2. Western culture has forcibly censored discussions of sex, particularly for minors, to the point that such topics have become needlessly taboo and spark conversation far faster when they're brought up in spaces where you're allowed to discuss it.
  3. This is the internet. You know what the internet is primarily used for.
  4. I'd wager more than half of the active users on this site are single. So. Y'know. Gotta talk about it with someone.
