I feel like it could be related to how easy or harder it is to get specific properties, as you say in the first paragraph. It's only an assumption on my part, but I assume he means something along the lines of getting the game rights easily. I mean, some series like Megaman, Street Fighter and Castlevania definitely make it look easy to get them when you look at how much content they have, next to Final Fantasy which hardly has anything else. We might be looking at some other franchises and say it would be easy, but it may be a different story altogether from Sakurai's and Nintendo's POV.
There is also the assumption of Sakurai being humble and underestimating just how much power and influence Smash Bros. has. Tons of people know about Smash Bros. It has a huge following not just among fans, but developers as well. A character getting into Smash Bros is treated as if they won an Oscar or Big Leagues or whatnot. And even characters without a big following in their own games reach the ears of even non-players.
That's not even counting it's influence for Platform Fighters, including Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Smash Bros, all-in-all, is a very influential franchise.
