They're literally just <li> elements and the site scales as needed. As seen here, I just added 2 more <li> elements and the site adjusted as needed. It scales and adjusts the grid as needed when resizing the browser, no matter the amount.
Not that I think they specifically set the site up to add echoes (responsive design is a good thing to do), but, in theory, they didn't design the website to not accommodate additional fighters if needed.

We're getting more than the 5 fighters. That's a certainty based on general milking of Smash Bros and just from the Smash team being open for more characters.
Hmm... maybe Fighter Pass 2 in the future?
They’re currently only planning for one fighter’s pass, but they’ve left the door open in case the pass is really lucrative and Sakurai is up for it to make more.
Sorry to disappoint but, I believe this is basic stuff with Javascript, CSS and HTML aka basic Web Development. Heck, even I think you only need CSS and HTML for this. The way it is created, doesnt mean you actually have to put a limit.

I'm down for more Smash content. I probably wont hold the new team to the same standard as Sakurai because I'm pessimistic like that. However, if we're gonna get more bang for the buck with Ultimate, I'm definitely down for it and we can criticize their mediocrity so they can improve worse case scenario.

i feel like the characters would probably be a bit less detailed in terms of representation

They could add more DLC stages if they wanted, obviously, but it's not quite as easy as just popping in a new <li> element and having everything cleanly scale. It actually seems that this layout was designed with only 5 stages in mind, for the time being.
I definitely think so, while Sakurai is creative, one creative mind can only produce so much. Though I hope whoever new is brought on can capture as many details in the characters as him.

Do you really think they would actually leave though? Like, he said that the team would shrink "over the course of the DLC Development". If there's more than 5 extra fighters, and they had that planned from the start, then why would fighter 5 be the day they leave and not fighter 15?
