These are early returns on information that will be more fully released at a later date (when subsequently the second annual Smash Tournament Year in Review will be released). Before a more in depth analysis is presented though I'm releasing some of the larger numbers that many will likely find interesting.

So, between May 31st (when Ankoku started taking data) and April 11 (the last recorded date) there have been at least 572 tournaments held in 316 days. That is a whopping number, that is only dwarfed by the fact that probably 20% of the tournaments that occurred fell through the cracks and weren't recorded. This means there was an average of 1.81 tournaments per day over this time period with an average attendance of 37 players. In turn, roughly $1,380 is spent per day on Brawl tournaments.

The Month with the highest attendance average was February 2009, with an average attendance of 45.53 people. The second highest average attendance currently looks like April 2009, as midway through the month it is at 45.11 people per tournament (out of 17 tournaments). The third/forth highest are June/August at 41.29/40.29 people out of 51 and 65 tournaments, respectively.

The two lowest averages were July and September, both with 32 people averages out of 67/43 tournaments. I believe the reason July had a low average was because there were no large national tournaments held in this month because FC got canceled. There were a lot of tournaments, just no large ones. As per September having both low average attendance and the lowest amount of tournaments (for any month with complete data) I think we can put the reason squarely on the start of school for most people. The third lowest month was December with an average of 34.2 people and a total of just 46 tournaments in the month.

Grand Totals:
Number of tournaments: 572
Number of entrants: 21,500
Average Attendance per tournament: 37.585
Singles Entrance Fee Total: $198,355.30
Estimated Total Prize Money (singles X 1.8): $$357,039
Estimated Total Entrance Fee (singles X 2.2): $436,381.70
Per day entrance fee average: $1,380
Per day tournament average: 1.8

The information comes from using Ankoku's tournament data, which can be found here:

Further, if you have attended a tournament and you would like to report the results of said tournament, then please post in Ankoku's thread located here:

Good stuff.

It's amazing how large this community is considering it's almost all just grassroot :).

Wow, insane stuff.

Some of this can really be used to legitimize Smash as a real competitive game.

Can we compare this to other gaming communities?
Good stuff though. Must have taken a lot of effort to get those numbers.

We can't really compare to anyone else because:
1) No other community is as organized as ours and records these types of statistics
2) No other community is likely of a size anywhere even close to this (meaning data would be...less than stellar for determining averages)
3) This is the first time this type of data has ever been looked at by anyone in any community

So what about SSBM tournaments? The total is probably much smaller, although I am still curious.

I never even thought about anyone compiling these statisitics, though. This is amazing!

To determine money that doesn't go straight back to the players take the estimated total entrance fee - the estimated total prize

$436,381.70
-
$$357,039
=
$79,342

How that money is then split up is hard to say. There are multiple practices, not the least of which being:
-Some TO's put extra venue fee money back
-Some TO's use the venue fee to pay people who helped run the tournament and themselves
-Some TO's rented a venue and need the money to repay upfront costs
-Some TO's give the venue fee to the organization who held the event (LAN center) and for them its profit

Let's assume that the profit for each tech lounge is made by door fee. If you multiply the average door fee (5 dollars) by the average number of attendance rounded up to 38, that's 190 dollars in profit from door fees. Tournaments of that size are generally held bi-weekly. 190 dollars for 24 tournaments a year could equal around 4,500 in year, on top of other profits.

Of course, this would not be the tech lounges main method for profit, but everything revolving around the tournament would be pure profit. The main issue, however with a tech lounge still remains in the start up, having huge cost in providing games (50 dollars each for Wii, ), and consoles.

Let's assume that the tech lounge must have, in order to begin its business, for a tech lounge to have 10 of each system, Wii having Brawl, Mario Kart, Guilty Gear, and Call of Duty, World At War, Xbox having Gears of War, Halo 3, Street Fighter 4 and Call of Duty Modern War Fare, and PS3 Having Grand Teresmo, Street Fighter 4, and Call Of Duty: Modern War Fare.

The total cost for this would be
For just Wii Set ups: 4450
For Xbox: 4450
For PS3: 5800

Total Setup Cost: 14700

This does not include PC set ups, nor providing any other games but essential competitive games listed above, as well as leaving out television sets.

However, well run tech lounges often have larger audiences than house tournaments, which also figure into the stats listed above. Gigabits, a monthly brawl tournament in Florida, now averages around 140 people per Brawl tournament. If gigabits went the route of the door fee, they would make 700 dollars, and they also run a melee tournament of a slightly smaller size of 90, granting them 450 dollars. This gives them a yearly average of 315,000 from JUST smash tournaments. If we assume that the same organization runs a Halo and Gears of war tournament on separate Saturdays, then the profit goes up to 630,000. Subtracting the base start up cost, rounded up to 30,000 thousand to include televisions, bills, and mortgage for venue, the organization is still left with 600,000 profit, just from tournaments alone.

NOTE- I was VERY conservative with the start up cost. I seriously doubt you would pay 15,000 on bills and mortgage for a venue this large for your first year. I also assumed that Halo tournaments and Gears of War are the same size as Smash.

Man that is some crazy numbers. Almost 2 tournaments everyday. Tons of money being spent on smash. It would be awesome if we could get statistics on the average amount of money matches and how much was spent that way.

I hope MLG and EVO get a chance to see these numbers.

I always pull up this thread when people say that playing Brawl competitively is a joke. People in Louisiana that are members of scenes for Street Fighter and other traditional fighters or even FPSes are consistently shocked by the draw of our tournaments and the raw amount of events that we have.

Alphazealot, I gotta say, your are pretty awesome. I was trying to guess how many per day, I guesses just one. But almost two per day, that is shocking. And your right we do have one of the best communities.

Good job
