True, but I don't view the species thing as anything too against Toad, hell Yoshi got in. And Yoshi isn't even the same Yoshi as the one that appears in the spin off series (correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty sure it's not the same one)

So who knows, Toad might one day be in smash.
Then everyone will probably be treating him like Yoshi, an allstar who they don't want to be removed from the series.
I believe there actually is a "the" Yoshi. Not positive on that, though.

And yeah, if he was ever included, he'd be there for good.

Yeah, there is one if you take Yoshi's Island DS seriously. That makes me wonder what a Baby Toad would have done in that game.
Spawn mushrooms to let those other Yoshi's(not THE Yoshi mind you) gain additional platforming...or I dunno; constantly supply you with eggs like the merchant he would inevitably have become.

Yoshi's Island DS spoilers hidden here;

There is technically a The Yoshi, but he was born after the events of Yoshi's Island, according to the DS version; thus he is not the one who eventually defeats Kamek and Baby Bowser.

The only thing we've been told that allows us to tell the hero who saved the Star Children from "The Yoshi" is "The Yoshi" is capable of speaking human language, and is the only Yoshi to be able to do so as seen in SMRPG, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario World.

Taking that on board; SSB Yoshi is ironically NOT "The Yoshi" as he doesn't and can't speak merely spouting his name, grunts and making other assorted noises like all his kin can do.

So guess what kids? SSB Yoshi? Not "The Yoshi". Possibly Yoshi's Island Yoshi, but there's no way to tell.

For me Yoshi in SSB is that Star Child Yoshi + he's also the Yoshi we saw in Yoshi's Island. He talks in Yoshi for representation only though: I think the timeline would be this:

Yoshi's Island -> Yoshi's Island DS -> Yoshi's Story -> what all other Mario-games follow.

Baby Toad? Hmmm...

Well, you know how Toads always give out items at Toad Houses... well, if Yoshi has Baby Toad on his back, holding Down on the + Pad while pressing the Y button in front of those red tulips... see the picture...

Baby Toad shoots spores at those red tulips... and they become Fire Flowers... like those Fire Flowers that were found on Dinosaur Land...

They turn Yoshi into Fire Yoshi and he throws flaming eggs that melt ice... now, if those tulips were blue... they become Ice Flowers when Baby Toad shoots spores on them... they turn Yoshi into Ice Yoshi and he throws eggs that freeze enemies, including the Nep-Enuts, turning them into temporary platforms.

Remember this pot of flowers?

If Baby Toad shoots spores on them, they grow into a beanstalk flower like this...

And Yoshi can push potted beanstalks around.

Remember this plant that shoots out eggs?

If Baby Toad shoots spores on them, the Egg-Plant starts shooting out giant eggs!

No Fat Guys required!

See that mushroom?

If Baby Toad shoots spores on red mushrooms, they turn into Super Mushrooms... when Yoshi grows bigger, he can actually eat Piranha Plants, Boos, Tap-Taps, Bandits, and other normally inedible enemies. Yoshi also lays giant eggs.

If Baby Toad shoots spores on green mushrooms, they turn into 1-Up Mushrooms.

If Baby Toad shoots spores on mushrooms with different colors, they grow into mushroom platforms like these mushrooms...

Hahahaha Arcadenik, you have just proven why Baby Toad wasn't in the game. He is too good, and too useful. They'd have to severely up the level difficulty.

You know... I was just looking through galleries upon galleries on MarioWiki... looking for ideas how to make Toad stand out... how to make Toad unique in his own game... and I realized that maybe what Toad's own game should be... is an adventure game... kinda like Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis) and Super Adventure Island II (SNES)... those two are some of my favorite Virtual Console games. Check out the videos to get an idea of what I am talking about...

The reason why I think Toad's own game should be an adventure game like those two games instead of a traditional 2D platformer like the New Super Mario Bros. games is because of the Toad Brigade. In Super Mario Galaxy games, the Toads showed us that they have shields and spears, pickaxes, and headlights. How could they function in an adventure game? Well... Toad could equip a spear for fighting enemies and a shield for deflecting fireballs and other projectiles. Toad could equip a pickax to break rocks that are blocking his path. Toad could equip a headlight to navigate through dark places.

Toad could even obtain more abilities during his adventure... the ability to pick up vegetables like in SMB2... the ability to pick up and carry enemies like in SMB2... the ability to dig through sand like in SMB2... the ability to charge and jump very high like in SMB2... the ability to stack blocks like in Wario's Woods... the ability to walk on walls like in Wario's Woods... it would be a nice refreshing change from the traditional 2D platformer games like the New Super Mario Bros. games... and it would finally give Toad a well-deserved time in the limelight.

Unfortunately can't check out the videos until I get home, looking forward to seeing exactly what you think would suit Toad.

From some of your description, I just thought of Link level of preparedness. Also was reminded a bit of the Oracle games (seasons and ages, action and puzzles respectively), just with a few more tricks up Toad's sleeves or vest. Also enjoyed the fact you'd include all of Toad's abilities.

Gotta say, Toad was legit in that video. I never cared for the propeller hat, but it was actually pretty cool for his upB.

SPECULATION TIME!

There's a new Nintendo Direct today.

Pic of the Day shows a new or redisgned Peach move.

Ahem.

(Don't get your hopes that high though. Just saying.)

If only that rainbow move was Peach's new B move...

A Toad & Toadette team? Yeah, no... I believe we might get a Diddy & Dixie team today.

I think Little Mac's reveal has raised Toads chances. Sure, its unlikely Mario would get 6 reps, but think about it. Sakurai had the boxing ring stage appear generic, but revealed its true form as a Punch-Out! stage. Isn't it possible that Peach's B could be hidden the same way? Toad is revealed, and Peach's B is changed to Toadette or Toadsworth. Its not far-fetched at all.

Still up Peach's dress.
Theoretically possible.
Hugely and highly unlikely still.

Not that I'd be disappointed to be wrong and see a gleaming snowy moustache on the Toad counter, but I can't see it happening even with this.

I am feeling triumphant as a pre-Melee Little Mac supporter... I finally got one of my most-wanted characters in Smash... all the feels I am experiencing right now... that's what I want to feel for Toad.

here's a thought (joking mostly):

as nes remix 2 features wario's wood perhaps in future smash games they'll represent the nes remix games with characters like toad

I love that NES Remix 2 got both Super Mario Bros. 2 (the USA one) and Wario's Woods.

I think Toad is probably gonna clear up viruses by picking up and carrying pills.

Yeah... it would also be cool if we could play as Toad and Peach in Super Mario Bros. 2 (the Japanese one) and Super Mario Bros. 3 in NES Remix 2. :awesome:

Comparing the Kinopio model to the players shows that it wasn't finished. He's also hinted multiple times, with captions like "Four characters.(?)"
It's certainly possible, and has a bit of a chance.

Ugh. Don't remind me. If Toad was really playable and Sakurai was hinting at his inclusion with "four people?", he would have shown Toad instead of Rosalina. I know, I know, he could be unlockable... but I'm not hoping for that. I'm wishing for that (there's a difference).

Captain Toad, reporting for duty. (Been busy so rather far behind)

You and me both. I was going to join this site that day but after seeing that picture, instead I had that gutted stage that I'm sure other supporters went through. / ramble

As you linked a video of Crusade in a previous post, I have mixed feelings with it. On the one hand I love playing as the little powerhouse...

On the other, it just confirms that Toad could easily be a legit addition to Smash.

Little Mac being in is cool. Thought he might have been after the boxing ring, but wasn't 100% convinced because I've not got the best rate at being correct. (Toad and Isaac, I thought naively might be actually playable in Brawl.)

You know, Wario's Woods really isn't that obscure anymore... Nintendo seems to be bringing it back over and over lately...

Post-Melee and Pre-Brawl, Wario's Woods (NES) was one of the first NES games to be available on Wii Virtual Console... and it was one of the NES games available in the original Animal Crossing...

Post-Brawl and Pre-SSB4, Wario's Woods (NES) is now available on 3DS and Wii U eShop... and it is one of 12 games in NES Remix 2.

Maybe we need to take this as an opportunity to download Wario's Woods and NES Remix 2... so we can register them in our Club Nintendo accounts and fill out the surveys... and in those surveys, we could tell Nintendo about Toad... and that he should have his own game.

Been a while since I've been here but I came to think about something that might explain why it is actually more sensible to not feature Toad in this game. Call me getting very early on this and I might be proven wrong for good if Toad's locked in the future as a special, but hear me out.

Now I know that Toad has started to get more publicity during all these years, but now that I look back on what systems are being exactly represented in SSB4, which are Wii & late DS + 3DS, I can't help but think that Toad not being featured as a playable now (probably) make now sense considering those systems.

Rosalina comes from Super Mario Galaxy, which is the core Super Mario-game series we got on Wii, and one of the most critically acclaimed Mario-games of all time. Now I know that Toad was also in NSMB-games, but around then it was more about Blue Toad and Yellow Toad (Buckenberry and AlaGold, were they those names?) and he was also being played around with a new kind of identity ala Brigade Captain in Galaxy. In anycase, while NSMB-series sold so much more than SMG, it still pales in comparison to how it impacted on people and Nintendo itself.

I think we're not entirely able to get Toad and Rosalina to be in the same game this time, especially if you consider how just recently Toad got one-upped to playable status that wasn't restricted to multiplayer Mario skin. (SM3DW) . From the uniqueness and representation standpoint, Rosalina made more sense to SSB4's Mario-representation from mainstream-games of the Wii + 3DS-era than Toad.

Anyway - when some years pass on and perhaps one day we hear about new Super Smash Bros being made, let's consider that the games represented on that will at least feature Wii U-games. What is the current big Super Mario Wii U-game then? Super Mario 3D World, of course.

Unless Sakurai agrees still on that Toad is best being a special to Peach and/or finds some other Mario-newcomer or none, we might perhaps get to see Toad playable as a dedication to Super Mario 3D World-representation. After all, he's still something along the lines of it's missing link.
What would even more help this is that if Nintendo keeps on promoting Toad on more solo adventures or being more than just the multiplayer skin or mere helper along with many of his look-a-likes, this would make Sakurai consider him in a new light, and perhaps hatch up a way to make him a very uniquely crafted fighter and thus do more justice to the recent Mario-games featuring Toad (in similar roles to SM3DWorld or more).

I just say, this is just the beginning guys. We might have missed the ship but this isn't the end.

I am not convinced that Toad for sure didn't make the roster. I'm sure it's been speculated a thousand times in this thread but this is Sakurai's reveal of Peach:

"Pic of the day. Peach joins the battle! We've added 10 pictures of her on the website, but keep in mind that the game is still in development. Her moves may be refreshed by the time the games are released."

And yes, he's shown Toad as Peach's move multiple times; I am aware. What I would like to point out is.. how many times did we see the Smash Bros. themed boxing stage before Little Mac's reveal? And when Little Mac was revealed, the stage was shown again, updated, with Punch-Out!! graphics and logos/labels. I don't know why he would specify on Peach's reveal only, that her moves could possibly be refreshed... unless he was hinting at something? She wasn't the first returning veteran revealed outside of E3 either.

Plus, what in the world is this:

I don't believe this is her replacement B move, or anything.. but we've seen a lot of moves that this could be replacing already, which could mean her moveset isn't finalized. (Granted, this could realistically be a taunt.. but my point still stands).

Sakurai likes to pull our legs, people. Don't give up hope yet lol.

I would not be surprised at all to see a post-release reveal of Toad as a semi-clone of Mario as a secret character.

*sigh* Toad as an unlockable semi-clone of Mario? I don't want another Dr. Mario situation... I suppose he could be a mix of Mario, Luigi, and Peach to make him a bit more distinct from them.

B: instead of throwing fireballs like Mario, Toad throws iceballs that freeze enemies in blocks of ice

Side+B: instead of launching himself like Luigi, he tackles across the air as if he is under the effect of speed-boosting mushrooms from Mario Kart games

Up+B: instead of doing jump punches like Mario and Luigi, Toad wears the propeller hat to fly and he floats down slowly like Peach... he can do "Toad Tornado" when the controller stick is pushed down.

Down+B: instead of pulling out small vegetables like Peach, he pulls out giant vegetables from Super Mario Advance (superhuman strength, remember?)

Final Smash: let's just have bombs fall from the sky just like in Wario's Woods, considering Nintendo seems to keep bringing that game back over and over

Yes. This would be the hope.. I would rather have semi-clone Toad than no Toad at all, again.

Oh, wow, this thread is still alive? I gotta hand it to you guys; you got more dedication than I do.
I have always had Toad on my mind ever since Rosalina's confirmation. Toad is my number one most-wanted character. All the other characters I want, they are very unlikely... Meowth, Duck Hunt Dog, Tingle, Impa, King Hippo, Medusa, Simon Belmont, Wandering Heroes... and I feel that Toad, Dixie Kong, Little Mac, Pac-Man, and Palutena are fairly likely... but of the likely ones, Toad is the character I want the most but now it seems that he is probably unlikely since Sakurai showed Toad as Peach's B move three times before SSB4 is out (when in the past Sakurai showed Toad one time before Melee and Brawl came out)... and in my mind, when I see a roster without at least Toad, I don't like it very much... and then I look to see if any of my other most-wanted characters are included (to compensate the lack of Toad)... if I don't see five of them, well, you guessed it. I have not been active in this thread since I'm preoccupied with schoolwork so I'm just casually posting random stuff all over the place on my free time.

Poor Waluigi fans. Even Toad wasn't directly decomfirmed yet.

Not saying he won't be, though. And am I the only one kinda counting on that rainbow move as Toad's final chance in as a playable character?

This! It is frustrating that Sakurai had to point out that Waluigi, Ashley, and Skull Kid are 100% deconfirmed since they are Assist Trophies... and all Toad gets is "keep in mind that Peach's moves may be refreshed when the game is finished", "four people? Super Mario 3D World is out!", and an arrow to the heart. Why did Sakurai give these characters a quick merciful deconfirmation but teasing/trolling over Toad's role in the game with ambiguous comments? Toad may be popular but come on, he's not Ridley.

Weeellll...

In Japan Toad is pretty much more popular than Ridley. Toad's one of the most popular characters from Nintendo not in Smash over in Japan, and they're not really that heavily into Metroid. So technically he is way more popular than Ridley in Japan at the very least.

But well placed cynicism stops them requests as we've previously discussed in this very thread.

Keep in mind that Starfy wasn't acknowledged to be Assist, he was just mentioned under a wierd tag of "yellow things". I know we might be toyed around but it might be the matter of time before we see Toad finally deconfirmed for real for the most stubborn fans out there.

Though really, I had dropped the balls already since Peach's reveal.

Unlike Waluigi, Ashley, and Skull Kid... Starfy didn't really have that big of a fanbase... so Sakurai probably doesn't really need to put it bluntly that he's an Assist Trophy.
