very nice

on the subject of the "leak" how credible id its source?
The initial leaker(not the gamefaqs copycat) has managed to get some bits right in the eshop and online service department right if I recall correctly, but still take it with a pinch of salt.

Still I think this is the first leak to have a Toad in it ever outside the Melee shoot the credits rumour?

I was thinking the same thing.
For YEARS I have seen popular leak/rumor after leak/rumor and none of them ever had Toad! The shoot the credits one that I fell for when I was like 10 (just because I wanted it to be true so badly lol) is the only rumor I can think of that has Toad in it. (At least any rumors that were popular.)

It's kinda nice to see people talk and speculate about Captain Toad! And it's kinda cool that some people accept Toad, but they are skeptical when it comes to Crash and Spyro.

My theory on the "leak" is that the leaker learned about the online services part early and thought if they posted that info online we'd believe any other wild claims they made.
So... I don't believe it. Even though I wish it were true because of Toad. I just think they got a tiny bit of info and decided to run with it!

I would rather have Captain Toad than regular toad. Captain toad just looks more unique.

Anyways, I see Captain Toad as the next likely Mario pick and character I would like to see in Smash.

I support!

I feel that maybe Toad / Captain Toad might be the Mario newcomer for Smash Switch. They seem to be the most relevant non-Smash Mario characters between Smash 4 and Smash Switch development time (2014 to 2018).

Brawl to Smash 4
2007 - Super Mario Galaxy :rosalina: (first time Toad called himself Captain Toad but it was also the debuts of Rosalina and the Lumas)

2009 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii :4bowserjr: (first time Toads are playable in a main Mario game since Super Mario Bros. 2 but it was also the first time Bowser Jr. was in the Koopa Clown Car and it marked the return of the Koopalings since Super Mario World)

2012 - New Super Mario Bros. U :4bowserjr:

2013 - Super Mario 3D World :rosalina: (first time Toad is playable in a 3D Mario game but it was also Rosalina's first playable role in a main Mario game)

Smash 4 to Smash Switch
2014 - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Toad's first own game since Wario's Woods 20 years prior)

2016 - Super Mario Run (Toadette's first playable role in a main Mario game but it was also Daisy's first playable role in a main Mario game and it marked Daisy's return to the main Mario series since Super Mario Land)

2018 - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Toad's first own port)

Interesting. I've always seen it as 'who was important last console' but I guess it could be the period.

For example: After we got the always relevant Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser, Wario got into Brawl due to WarioWare debuting on GameCube and being a massive hit.

Rosalina debuted on the Wii, as Galaxy was the breakout hit Mario game.

Bowser Jr. was held back a console generation from his debut, but during the Wii period he became a much more important and involved character(although that has died down a fair bit of recent; no Odyssey appearance and skipped over in MK8 for the Koopalings).

We look at the Wii U period and as you said Captain Toad, Toadette(and Toad) have been very busy with 3D World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker clearly marked as the breakout star from 3D World.

I guess time will tell but I genuinely don't think there's been a better time to add our shroom boys (and girl) than right now.

If we are talking relevance it's also worth noting just how persistent of a presence Toad is, especially in comparison to Jr or Rosalina.

I mean Rosalina has become a regular in spin offs, but that's pretty much where it ends, outside of a Battle Card cameo in Paper Jam, a Mystery Mushroom costume in Maker and a 8-Bit Sprite cameo in Odyssey she really hasn't show up in any significant capacity in any of the non-Kart/Party/Sports/etc. titles since 3D World.

Jr by comparison is still a big part of the series, but even then he still occasionally misses out on major titles, such as Color Splash, Super Mario Run, the ''3D Duology'' or Odyssey or has no plot relevance in something Like Mario & Luigi Dream Team or Minion's Quest.

By comparison Toad is pretty much always around, Treasure Tracker being an obvious major sticking point, especially since Nintendo seems to hold it in pretty decent regard, given that we are getting two ports of it. There's also Run and his escort missions in Mario + Rabbids, not to mention his supporting appearences in Color Splash or Odyssey. Even before Smash For we also had things like Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, where Toad appears, when even Peach is absent, plus even Sticker Star or Paper Jam, which don't have a ''The'' Toad, still feature Toads as the main NPC type.

If we want to talk other Toad characters then I'd also argue that Toadette is probably the biggest breakout Mario character in recent times, given that she was a spin off created character, who didn't even get any appearences between 2009-2012, so she had a lot going against her, even with the appearences in TTYD or her intro cameo in Galaxy.

And now look at her, she came back in 2013, shows up more then ever before and get's roles in non-spin off games left and right, including Paper Jam, a costume in Mario Maker, Mario + Rabbids, Super Mario Run, Odyssey and even getting to be the co-star of an entire game with Treasure Tracker, which is something that Rosalina, Waluigi or many others can't claim.

Long story short: the Toads are a huge deal, there is really no excuse for them to still lack playable representation in Nintendo's biggest crossover series.

i think cap toad is the only star of a spin off not in smash yet

better double check
Certainly for Mario, although you could argue the Toad has also had several of his own spinoff games with the most famous being Wario's Woods.

Zelda has Tingle and Tetra who have had spinoffs(albeit Tetra's was a one off that was pretty forgettable and Tingle's aren't high profile thanks to America hating him)

The only other I can think of is the other kind of Toad; Slippy Toad who had Star Fox Guard last generation.

To be fair Wario's Woods was a puzzle game. And if Nintendo/Sakurai wanted a puzzle game rep back then, they'd probably go with Lip. (Though I suppose technically Dr. Mario is the puzzle game rep though he certainly doesn't use any puzzle game inspired moves).

While Treasure Tracker is also a puzzle game. It has alot more movement (There is certainly some movement from Toad in Wario's Woods but still limited comparatively) and interaction then the dropping of blocks and/or grabbing and moving enemies.

Timing screwed up Daisy. September 2017 is too late for a roster decided in 2016 but will probably be overshadowed by 2018 games for DLC.
That said, the timing very much aligns into Captain Toad's favor and the fact that Captain Toad did not get a "proper" trophy in Smash 4 actually shows Sakurai didn't skip over the game, but just that the game released too late for a base roster, decided in 2012, consideration. Which puts him in a prime spot for Smash Switch.

Although, I'd mention Paper Mario also had a pretty swell generation behind his back

Captain Toad along with Toadette also have the benefit of their game being ported to BOTH the 3DS and Switch markets granting them quite some exposure in the near future (in addition to the game's existing Wii U base - 3 systems as a whole). While his character identity has been even more confusing as of late, Toad is no slouch either as he was also playable in 3D World and SMR (along with Toadette in the latter) with his defined high speed trait - something I hope Captain Toad can maintain while having a worse air game (however way Sakurai can implement his aerial gameplay).

Going by this, Toads in general have quite a good resume right now. Certainly a whole lot better than the days of them being only simple NPCs that run like headless chickens (the GameCube era truly didn't do them any favours). Least now, some of them are ready to take up the fight as major characters. What better way to rep the series than to have a literal charming and walking mushroom?

Also any ideas about what Captain Toad's possible entrance animation can be? Perhaps crashing a minecart onto the stage? Or perhaps a more fun idea of the Starshroom literally dropping down Captain Toad in a comedic way?

Personally I like Captain Toad hanging onto a Power Star that Wingo has got a hold of until he falls off.

I like the idea of Toad being dropped off by the Toad Brigade and he waves at them as they fly away.
But I also really like the idea of him being clumsy when he enters the stage. Like falling off of Wingo.
Or like tripping over something while he is walking and he realizes he has opponents and is like "Oh guess I'm in a battle now."

I'm pretty against the 'leak', actually.
I don't think it's very credible, but while I support both Ridley and Captain Toad, Ridley has FAR MORE support from me than Captain Toad. And I want Ridley as an E3 reveal.

Fair enough, and I can't blame you for wanting Ridley to have a big reveal as he too has been waiting for years.

Imo, I don't believe the leak either; however, it's quite nice to see Toad (or rather Captain Toad) getting more attention to being a candidate in the new Smash Bros, and I certainly do hope it's time for a Toad to finally become playable in Smash Bros title this time around. Personally, I find the Captain best suited for this role with his relevance and charm (who can also bring along alt costumes for Toadette and some of the abilities/traits that Toad himself has in addition to Captain Toad's own abilities).

The only reason why its talked about is because the leaker at leat guessed when Nintendo was going to reveal information on May 7th, and theres also not really anymore news about E3 from nintendo.

Nintendo has been really tight lipped about their E3 conference and on Smash, its really building up hype. And we’re also just one month away too.

to be fair nintendo are usually quite tight lipped, i can think of many an e3 conference with "leaks" before hand but none that turned out to be true

i guess we'll find out a month today

Quick question for you all; we often discuss having Toadette as an alt for either Toad, but how would you feel about having Toadsworth as well for either Toad? I imagine pickaxe attacks for the Captain would be reskinned to his walking cane, but obviously he wouldn't need such tweaks for regular Toad...

The more the merrier! I would not be upset if they added more alternate costumes/skins for Toad!

Toadsworth has been out of the spotlight for a while now, Aside from cameos (Mario Party Top 100), appearances via remakes (Superstar Saga remake), and trophies. Toadsworth hasn't appeared since 2013 for Mario and Luigi Dream Team. So I really doubt he's getting in as anymore then a trophy again. I do think Toadette will most certainly be an alt should Captain Toad make it in though. And that'll be pretty cool for her fans on it's own.

Though tbh I can see Daisy and Waluigi fans getting upset that Toadette got in over those two. :p
I mean, as an alt I doubt the salt would be that high. As otherwise they'd already be super upset about all the Koopalings coming in as alts for Bowser Jr. It'd exist for sure, but not as much as if they made Toadette a Toad/Captain Toad clone ala Dark Pit.

Having Toadsworth as an alt wouldn’t make sense imo, especially when he doesn’t appear in CT: TT or any other games that Cpt. Toad appears in. Captain Toad and a Toadette alt would be enough for me.

A Toadsworth alt would be brilliant if possible though I'm fully expecting Toadette alts akin to :4robinm::4robinf::4corrin::4corrinf::4olimar::4alph: as it would literally be a killing two birds with one stone scenario where players can choose to play either Captain Toad or Toadette like in CT: TT.

Toad Brigade alts for the Captain himself would be nice as well (wonder if they can sneak in the glasses for Hint/Blue Toad as well?).

Also a Mummy Me alt! Could certainly be a neat throwback too.

I don't really see Toadsworth Alt as being super Likely. but I could definitely see Toadette happening. and the other members of the Toad Brigade for his palate swaps.

Just want to say that Toad is quite probably - barring a few of the more popular Pokémon - the most iconic/well-known Nintendo character not yet playable in Smash Bros. I fully support his inclusion, particularly "normal" Toad. Nothing against Captain Toad specifically, but I think just "Toad" as is will always be more iconic and recognizable due to his history and presence in things like Mario Kart/Party/sports. Captain Toad and Toadette could very easily be alternate skins, though. Toadsworth could replace Toad in Peach's Neutral Special. That's how I'd divvy them all up, anyway.

Bonus points if they base his values on his properties in games like SMB2 and SM3DW: fast dash speed but with mediocre jump and air momentum but high gravity. Could be an interesting set of values to have on one character.
