Hey guys, I haven't forgotten about you.
Smashboards seems to be down most of the time I check it.

I've made notes of how many people each of you thinks is coming, and what equipment you've all offered to bring.

Just trying to get a final word from the Vaticon organisers about all this, and then I'll let you know what I expect each of you to bring and how much this will all cost.

Feel free to e-mail me in the meantime if you get stir-crazy.

If you come here. . .
You'll find me.

Sorry, got a bit carried away. But it should be nice to get everything finalised, and thanks again for doing this, I appreciate it

VIII, actually, from the opening, and then later on in the game aswell

I can bring a Wii, 4/5 controllers, Melee, and a memory card. . . possibly a TV, but don't count on it. There's another guy who might be coming who could potentially bring another everything - Cube, Melee, controllers etc. not sure really, but I can't bring a whole lot

Well, I'm 15. I'm very inexperienced with the tournament scene, I've never been to one, howewver, I like to play competitively as well as for fun.

I'd go to the next one if this was a success.

Tenner bets someone gets into a row with another person.

Yo JO3 and COEY, glad to hear you're interested, and if you get lodging you both should definitely drop by. 'Bout the date, all the info's in the first post, just give it a read

And it's over the weekend of April 4th (if you're both really that lazy)

Oh and Kone, try to let me know if you and GAWes are coming for sure, cheers

Ah man, that sucks, no chance of pushing it back either - not up to me at all, we're using UCD's Vaticon event so the date if very much fixed I'm afraid

That's a shame, but hey, I'm sure we'll get something else up and rolling soon enough, hope you guys can make it next time

And Kone, who'd I insult?

Gentlemen Gentlemen.

Sorry I've been quiet, I took Paddy's week off from work and the internet. T'was fun.

Since we're all introducing ourselves, I'm 24 and not from Dublin originally, but I moved here after I got a pretty sweet job. My tournament experience is next to nil, but I believe having fun is more important than winning, and that playing people who can kick your butt at a game is the only way to improve. So I do genuinely look forward to playing people who are better than me.

Back to business though.

The con-director of Vaticon has informed me that a day pass to the convention is €5 and a weekend pass is €8. I think this is very reasonable indeed.

I'd just like to correct an earlier error saying that this thing is the 4th, 5th and 6th of April; as far as I can tell the 4th is some late-night LAN party held at a Net Cafe; which while you are all free to attend, won't take place in a large room with TVs, and is therefore not conducive to playing Smash.

So to clarify this Smash tournament is JUST the 5th and 6th of April, not the 4th.

So my suggestion for events is that the price of entry into the singles tournament is €2. This means that the entire weekend doesn't cost any of us more than a tenner, which hopefully will incline more people to come.

For anyone hoping to win a huge pot of cash, keep in mind this isn't a huge dedicated official Smash tournament. This is Ireland's first effort at organising something, something which as far as I can tell hasn't ever materialised in the past.

Also, practically speaking, someone's going to have to mind the money. Since I've given my details to Vaticon as the person throwing this together, that person will probably be me. I would rather (and you should all too) if this sum was not massive.

It is regrettable also that Kone and Co could not attend. My plan for this tournament was basically to enjoy myself as much as possible, and get trounced by Pikaville. It would have been cool to get trounced by someone else.

I will actually be in Woking, Surrey for the first few days of April for meetings, so if any of the pro-UK crew want to meet up and play, it would certainly be more interesting than watching hotel tv.

Anyway, my proposals for the tournament are as follows:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Irish Smash Tournament at Vaticon

Saturday 5th

All day: Smash (free to all)

All day: Register of interest for doubles tournament

12pm: Singles tournament sign-ups begin (Cost €2)

2pm: Singles tournament

Sunday 6th

All day: Smash (free to all)

12pm: (If there is sufficient interest) Doubles tournament sign-ups (Cost €2 per team)

2pm: Doubles tournament

Rules: Don't be a jerk. All tournaments will have a lot of losers, and one (or two) winners, I want the winners to be classy, and the losers to be gracious. The more sportsmanlike we are about this, the more inclined we all might be to do this again sometime soon.

---------------------------------------------------------------

My only question with regard to the tournament scene is what the rule is regarding the pot. Does the winner take all? Or is there a split between first and second?

If you guys were willing as well, since I travel a lot, I'd be quite happy to print out some leaflets and pass them out to game shops the two weeks before the tournament. This might help generate some interest outside of the internet, but I would have to take some of the pot to cover printing expenses. My girlfriend also suggests that she could whip up a batch of cookies/cupcakes etc for cheap, if we wanted to have some refreshments in our little area. (1st prize = 60% 2nd prize = 30%, expenses = 10%, or something?)

If you guys aren't cool with that I understand, this is the internet, you SHOULDN'T trust strangers with money, but I thought I'd bring it up for discussion.

Hello, I'm a terrible but nonetheless enthusiastic smasher. Is it alright to show up with an unofficial controller and just join in for the friendlies?

Absolutely fine.

Keep in mind though we're holding this at the Vaticon convention itself, so you need to pay either €5 for a day entry or €8 weekend to get into the convention which then also allows you to participate in the many non-Smash related activities that will be occurring).

I myself am decent enough at Smash, but I have no illusions about the fact I'm going to take a hammering in the tournament.

The tournament is intentionally cheap at €2 to try and encourage more people to sign up (about the price of a bottle of Coke). So if you want your first (and probably final, what with Brawl on the way) taste of competitive Melee play, you might as well give it a go.

Entirely up to you though.

We encourage people like to come to the tournament. I myself am very sloppy at the game, so I here for the fun as well as a bit of competition, like as DeadEyeDave said, to improve myself.

It'll be wierd seeing everyone there at the tournament... when putting down our names, do we put down our forum name or our real name? Or both?

And if anyone has an imported copy of Brawl, please... leave it at home!

Nah just kidding. Please, by all means, bring it in, but if you are bringing it in, you are at VERY high risk so keep a good eye on it.

I can't wait for this tournament, just to let you all know

Oh and about the printing leaflets and stuff, I think that's an exceptional idea. I'll see if I can get around that, thugh I doubt there are any proper Smashers around my area...

And shall we put this tournament in the Tournaments Section on the boards? And if so, what'll we call it?

Here's to hoping this tournament goes very well!

(And apologies for such a long reply...)

Actually I was impatient, so I already printed up a few dozen and began handing them out in game stores. You should see them on the counters in a few stores around the city centre and dundrum so far.

I expect to get Tallaght, and the rest of the city centre stores at least done before next weekend, but being in England next week will put somewhat of a cramp on this.

If you think you can get a few more out, by all means pm me your e-mail address and I'll send you on what I've currently been handing out.

We're already technically in tournament discussion (under Europe), but I guess sticking it in the official tournaments discussion board wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I expect to hear back from the Vaticon director today about getting us on the official website. Once I'm satisfied all is well and good I'll make a post in the tournaments board.

With regard to names, a few passing puns appealed to me:

Tir na Smash, Smash Na nÓg.

Short snappy names that only Irish people would really get, and only really need to.

about the price of a bottle of Coke
When you put it that way, yeah sure why not.:bee:
Was in a low-key college Melee tournament before and got destroyed.A good time had by all tho!
Nice to see a a proper Irish contest being held at last, kudos organisers.
Is there much of a smash scene in Dublin at the minute or is everyone just coming out of hiding now thanks to the tournament?

Well seeing as this is the first official Smash tournament, I think everyone is just coming out now. Though I've been telling people about Smash since I was ten (and I'm 15 now) but no-one seemed to care

Okay Lynkx you should have that now. Thanks for the help.

There isn't really a regular Dublin Smash scene to my knowledge, my only other experience with Irish Smashers was a very small Smash tournament held off the back of a much bigger Halo tournament about three years ago.

Pikaville throughly beat me down with his Shiek there, and I had to leave right afterwards to catch the train home without any time for socialising.

Maybe if we all get along during this tourney, we can get some more regular games going.

Sheik has learned a lot of tricks since then ;) ......as well as Falco and Marth.Depending on the match up Ill probably use Sheik 80% of the time.

Im sure we'll have a great laugh.

By the way Dave where in Dublin are you living?

I also put up posts in a few Irish gamer websites to get more people to come to this.I also put one up on the nintendo section of boards.ie.

Oh and we should do something about trying to record our matches(at least the finals or something)

Hey guys, secondary organizer here.

I was hoping to make some snacks for the smash room, maybe a few sweets or something. Can anyone who has allergies just let me know? I have no problem doing gluten free or sugar free or whatever, I just need to know a bit in advance so I can stock my kitchen.

I officially love you. You win, no matter what.

And about recording, I have acamcorder, but that'll mostly record the fun of it all. If anyone has a capture card, bring it, as you will be responsible for recording Ireland's first tournament matches.

Oh, and DeadEyeDave, I'll only be able to put the ads in one shop, Game in the Blanchardstown Centre seeing as it's the only proper games shop where I live. A lot of people go there, though
