It takes about 6 months for a game to establish itself. You'd know this if you played another game. :p

Maybe you're not playing it, but I'm discovering new stuff every day.

Whatever dude. I'm sure you have plenty more experience than I do, and yeah there are new things to learn, especially matchup-wise. But learning matchup tricks in the end is only going to make the game more broken.

If you're trying to say that you won't be able to play all the characters in tourney in about six months post-release, then I'd say you're right. But that doesn't mean there has been a significant change in the metagame, it just means that we discovered which characters are best at the existing one.

I will never ever ever ever have fun playing vs you in Brawl. You will arrow camp me and I will hate it. In Melee you play my least favorite character in the game with probably one of my least favorite styles. That is way more fun to me.

My understanding is that it's like... there's innovation to the point where people find dominant strategies... and a metagame is established at a plateau. Then after more innovation the metagame evolves.

But no, it's never been explained to me, I just sort of took that from context.

Edit: Inui, I'm sure I'd find playing vs your Marth to be only marginally less boring and miserable than your Pit.

I'll take a potato chip....and eat it!!!
So yeah, I'm gonna try and make it to this, again, *sigh*. I've been having REALLY bad times getting to any tournaments lately. I really need some practice, too. At any rate, I REALLY wanna make this one...it's friggin' Melee!!! I played Brawl over the weekend....and sighed, 'cuz I honestly miss competition. Brawl is only fun when Niwatori and Dane are around. -_- At least then I don't know if I'm going to win 100% of the time.

i've always understood metagame, as far as it's used on smashboards, to effectively represent the dominant/popular strategies/characters/whatever in the tournament scene at the current time

emphasis on "current"... there's no "hidden" metagame that will slowly be revealed - that IS the metagame evolving :)

if you were just being broad such that you define the metagame as "camping" and nothing more detailed than that (i.e. pit arrow camping, etc), then i can buy what you're saying... but to me, "camping" is too broad a definition lol

edit: i'm moderately certain that the biggest part of true metagamING (based on my MTG days WAAAY back, BW, and wikipedia lol) is altering your strategy based on what you expect to be facing, i.e. picking up peach because you have 3 IC players in your pool

We haven't established anything, really. For instance, Jason once thought Dedede was mid tier, and now he's pretty much top tier. Brandon once thought MetaKnight was only high tier, and now he's the best character. The game is way too new to just say it sucks and can't be competitive. It's also too early to say it's better than Melee and will definitely replace it, although it's an extremely safe assumption that it'd replace Melee even if it's not better. That's how things go.

Why? I'll actually attack with Marth.

You can tell me I'm not talented, but really, Scar: When is the last time you've won a tournament?
The last two I went to. I'm not reading anything you had to say and just realized you posted something, and I mean I know I'm respected like a thousand times more than you by basically everyone in the entire community so I guess it's okay that I just don't care what you said.

Again, I'm glad you're doing well, I'm glad you're winning, I'm glad you're happy. But when you talk down to people it pisses me off. You got to "the top" by your own design.

You planned to get the game before everyone else and to train your *** off so you could have a dominant advantage immediately after the game was released. You found an advantage and took it. That's great.

But like I dunno, I'm beating people who have played the game way longer than I have just because I'm smarter and better at it. And I don't even talk down to people. My advantages are things that not everyone can do, while yours completely was. Many players could have imported Brawl the day it came out and practiced all the time and as a result win the majority of early Brawl tournaments.

idk I don't have a problem with you or what you've done. I have a problem with whenever you attempt to like... talk to me, because you're not funny, you're not clever... the thing about the pizza made me cringe, it was just so stupid. But your general demeanor and attitude towards everything on the whole aside, I don't have a problem with you.

I just dislike when you act like you're better than anyone else purely due to skill.

that -_-

to me, finding that, for example, dedede suddenly camps way better than pit instead of the other way around (i dunno i'm just making up chars because i really don't know the character balance in brawl lol) is a significant change in the metagame, not a tiny one as you suggest

to me, it's like discovering fox CGs falco waaay better than falco CGs fox in melee (though falco's CG is the most amazing thing ever)

This is also why I will never continue to argue with you over anything ever. You just don't understand/comprehend what I'm trying to say, and I feel that I waste my breath more than anything else.

This response is for all the people who read this post and agreed with it. It's true in some ways and makes a lot of sense, but the fact of the matter is that you're not responding to what I'm saying and instead saying something that I actually agree with.

Character matchups and tiers will not be established until a certain amount of time has passed. The more characters there are, the more time this will take. With 36 or 57 or however many are in Brawl, it's going to take a long time, there's no debating that.

This does NOT say anything groundbreaking about the relative competitiveness of the game when it's being attacked for flaws in the general game mechanics. If the problem with the game has to do with the constants that are unchanging between characters, in other words that which makes Brawl Brawl, it doesn't matter that we don't know which characters are best or what the matchups are.

No matter what we find out about the matchups, we can't change the game engine. Therefore the entirety of your post is both true and irrelevant, since it addressed nothing I wanted to talk about.

to me, finding that, for example, dedede suddenly camps way better than pit instead of the other way around (i dunno i'm just making up chars because i really don't know the character balance in brawl lol) is a significant change in the metagame, not a tiny one as you suggest
uhh... I dunno, maybe. I mean we're using a word we can't actually define, so this debate will get nowhere fast. I'm of the opinion that if that discovery were made, then there is no huge change in the way we play the game on the whole. Approaching with most characters in the game is not suddenly viable, and strong punsihment options are not now readily apparent.

The problems with the game still exist, and not approaching/shield camping/whorenado or turtle approaching with META GAME respectively are still the best strategies.

Yes, let's discuss how with the exception of the title of the thread there's little mention of anything Melee related in the 1st post and is primarily still the brawl info from before =P

Cheezit, your formatting is atrocious. You have the copy/pasted brawl stage list that's formatted as a vertical list that makes it clear that that's the stage section for brawl, and then immediately after it's totally obvious that the Melee rules will follow by using the highly descriptive "Rules" in small text, and then the big wall of text which is secretly the Melee rules tossed in there. You don't even mention that the part there is for Melee.

You can thank me later. Maybe now the people that aren't regulars to the thread will be able to figure out the scrambled mess that is the 1st page... (and the 3rd sentence won't be such a tedious request) =P

Some of you know me some of you don't. I'm here to bring you another tourney/fest in New Jersey at a constant rate.

Make sure you read all of the rules. I don't mind questions just not ones that are obvious.

Melee Rules

Format
₪ Double elimination
₪ If we have enough people I will run pools for seeding. If not then it will be random seeding
₪ Four (4) stock
₪ Eight (8) minute time limit
₪ Each round is best of three (3) matches; Finals are best of five (5) matches
₪ Items will be turned OFF
₪ For Doubles, Team attack is ON and life stealing is allowed.
Stage and Character selection: In a set, character selection for the first round will be blind pick. The stage select for the first match will be chosen by random select or may be agreed upon by the players. Random select will be used if there is any disagreement on stage selection. After the first match, the losing player from the previous match must announce their choice for the next level or elect to have the next level selected at random. Once the stage selection has been announced, the winning player may choose to change their character. Once the winning player has chosen his character for the next match, the losing player may then choose to change characters. After the stage and characters have been set, the players play their second match.
Stage Strike Rule: Each player or team can choose one (1) stage to remove from random select AFTER all players have selected their characters and have entered the stage select screen. Players may change their stage strike each time they enter the stage select screen. (DO NOT ACTUALLY REMOVE THE STAGES FROM THE RANDOM STAGES LIST)
Dave's Stupid Rule Modified: The same stage cannot be played twice in a row during a set

General
WOBBLING IS BANNED. If you are caught wobbling you will be disqualified
BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLERS
₪ In the event of a tie at the end of the time limit, the player with the most stocks wins the match. In case both players have the same amount of stock, the player with the lowest percentage wins the match. If both players have the same percentages, the players will quit the SUDDEN DEATH, set the stock to one (1), and start a bonus match on the same stage. If the bonus match goes to the end of the time limit- despite whatever the amount of stocks are left - then both players/teams will be disqualified from the tournament.
₪ In the event of an equipment malfunction, the match will be restart from the last known position or from any point in the match that is agreed upon by the players.
₪ Glitches used to stop your opponent from controlling their character or indefinitely freezing them (Mewtwo's Soul Stunner, the Ice Climber freeze glitch), or any glitch or trick that freezes the match or makes it in any way unfinishable are banned. Using them will result in the immediate forfeit of the match.
₪ Tactics such as Peach's Wallbombing and Jiggly's Rising Pound are allowed as methods of recovery or to maneuver around the stage. Using them (or any similar tactics) to excessively stall a match, such as dropping below levels intentionally and stalling underneath, is banned. Judges will be on the tournament floor and can be called in at any time to enforce this rule during a match.
₪ Nintendo Standard controllers only (any type of programmable controller must be inspected by me)
₪ BRING WAVEBIRDS AT YOUR OWN RISK. It will be your responsibility to find others with Wavebirds and sort out the frequency issues. If you bring a wavebird it is highly suggested to bring a normal Gamecube controller in case your Wavebird malfunctions.

Crews Rules
₪ Event will be round robin.
₪ All crews get to play one another and the one with the best record will win the event. In the event of a win/loss record tie, stocks from each battle will be counted to determine placements.
₪ Twenty (20) stock.
₪ Number of crew members can be 4-5 with no alternates.
₪ Forty (40) minute time limit.
₪ Items will be turned OFF
Random Stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Pokemon Stadium, Dreamland 64, Fountain of Dreams, and Yoshi's Story
Stage Strike Rule: Each crew can choose one (1) stage to remove from the random select list or available counterpicks. Players may choose to change their stage strike once between matches. (DO NOT ACTUALLY REMOVE THE STAGES FROM THE RANDOM STAGES LIST)
Dave's Stupid Rule Modified: The same stage cannot be played twice in a row.
₪ At the beginning of the match, crews will write down on a separate piece of paper the name of the first player and the character that player will be using. Then both crews will present the player that will start the match. Order can be decided play by play after the first player.
₪ Player selection between matches is 1 minute only. After time has been called crew must select a player or be disqualified from the match.
₪ The first stage in a crew battle will be by random select or agreed upon by both crews. In subsequent matches, the player going in may either decide the next stage to be played on or choose to go random. AFTER random or counterpicking the next stage is decided upon, but BEFORE a stage is actually selected, each side has the opportunity to change their stage strike. If the stage is chosen by a player and after the stage is decided, the player of the opposing crew may change their character at this time. If random is selected, the opposing player must stay as the same character they used in the previous match. The player going in then selects their character and the match is played.
₪ Percent returns to 0 after you finish off an opponent. The returning player begins the match with the amount of stocks they had remaining from the previous match, and must self-destruct as many times as necessary to reach this stock total. After stocks are adjusted, the players begin the match on opposing ends and/or platforms of the stage. Any needles, charged shots, turnips, etc must be purged before the match can begin.

Wow! I always wanted to conjour up all the results and ask Cheezit to put them on the first page but Magus actually did it plus more. Good stuff.

There is so much complete fail, and so much complete win, in such a small area here.

And back to Melee. I want to come so, so badly. ::crosses fingers as the semester winds down::

Nice post Magus. Check your PM's and get back to me.

Oh, ps, that post doesn't do much for cheezit in its current format. You should click edit, and then copy and paste the (hypertext?) format version into an email or something this way cheezit can simply copy and paste the entire format into his first post. Otherwise, he would have to change all of the sizes/colors manually, repeating most of the work you already did.
