I'll find a video of it somewhere, Its either in my Wii U or on Tournament Channels!
Yeah it does have really pitiful range., I'm surprised that I was able to trip a player and do damage when you're facing the other way with it though. So I've been abusing it, I know in that replay the Sheik was at 30-40% but I've done it around 80%-90% and it's cool to get kills or knock people away from the stage this way! They'll expect a backthrow but NEVER this. The hitbox seems janky
Actually, using dtilt instead of an instant throw in situations where you're not sure if a throw will work has been working out for me well lately. Dtilt recovers so much faster than grab, and if they attack, it comes out so fast that it can easily interrupt things they do. If they mash out an attack they might hit you, but there have been many times where the opponent has been just too startled by the situation to react properly and get grabbed anyways (or get tripped into the guaranteed grab).
Don't get me wrong, I still think dtilt is Ness' worst move, but this is how I use it. And sometimes, it's just safer to go for the grab. I just sometimes dtilt once or twice before grabbing.
ANYWAYS
Here's the little "something" I mentioned earlier that could be very good or not.
As it currently stands, I'm thinking it might be okay at this point, but not actually terribly powerful. I tried to test it out tonight against my crew, but I realized they played characters that weren't really susceptible to this technique.
So let's get onto it. While screwing around in the lab with my friend, he pulled a nice little footstool gimp on me. I found this footstool setup to be pretty nifty, and tried to test it out as mentioned. So yeah, this tech is a footstool gimp setup. It's designed to gimp people recovering below the ledge. There are a number of recoveries that make the opponent do this, but it won't be that effective on everyone.
To do it, run off the edge and bair opponents towards the stage with the
sourspot of the bair. Immediately after it, follow them and start mashing jump. The low hitstun of the sour bair sets them up pretty nicely for an easy footstool.
Now why would you want to do this instead of sweetspotting bair you might ask? Well it's not a stage spike, so it's not techable. There are a lot of players these days wising up to the stage spikes in this game, so they look for the tech all the time. Second, it's way easier to land than the sweetspot since the hitbox lasts for more frames. Third, it doesn't have to REPLACE sweetspotting bair. This can be seen more as another option for if you miss the sweetspot. This way, you have a gimp no matter how you land bair.
And as far as restrictions go, there are a few. As mentioned, this works really only on people recovering below the ledge. I was playing my crew's Pikachu and ZSS tonight, and they very rarely made themselves open to this because of their erratic recovery patterns (which is why I couldn't test it enough). Secondly, I think it's possible to escape the footstool depending on the reaction time of the opponent. I haven't tested it enough to see how tight of a window they have to escape it yet though. It also may depend on what their recovery move actually is. Lastly, bair's priority might hold it back. I'm not sure if sour bair beats all UpB mvoes in the game. If you get stunned during this, I'm not sure if the footstool is possible.
If anyone else wants to play around with this, be my guest. I think it's worth looking into. It could be good, it could be not.
