This comic and TF2's story managed to end in the most TF2 yet surprisingly wholesome way possible.
The tribute to Rick May and big Smissmiss reunion near the end, above all else, really got to me. All of the mercs seem much happier than they've ever been, Miss Pauling seems to have finally broken away from following her boss's path for good, we found out that Olivia got adopted by Hale and is now getting to live her own life free of Gray's influence, Hale and Maggie are going on more adventures and quite possibly going out on their own terms, in contrast to the Mann Brothers' and the Administrator's desperation to survive infinitely, Bidwell and a few others are now the owners of Mann Co., and even Merasmus didn't have things
quite as bad as usual.
...Plus, he's died in the comics before and he's a wizard, so chances are high he'll probably return to life again some day somehow. Also, we finally saw the Spy
canonically unmasked. Holy ****. That's something I wasn't ever expecting from official Vale material, either. Now only Pyro's true identity remains a mystery, and that's something that's best kept that way.
The twist with the Administrator and Zephaniah is something I really didn't expect. Almost every major conflict in TF2 happened solely because she wanted revenge on Zephaniah for something she can't even remember in the present day, continuing both the meta commentary on TF2's gameplay format and it's own storyline, concluding on a question on how after so much time passes, one can forget why they're still fighting for so long or whether that fight was truly worth it. That's shockingly brilliant and a perfect ending to the story of TF2 world's decades after decades of wars and conflicts.
I wasn't sure what to expect from the final issue of Team Fortress 2's comics, but the writers and Valve truly went above and beyond for the story's finale.
So long, partners.
