Like all RPGs, Pokemon has always been a point a to point b type game, they just throw in optional dungeons and puzzles for a little more to do. The later gens did scale that back a bit I will admit.Real talk, the idea that linear games possibly cannot be good was one of the worst things that happened to RPG arguments.
However, more to do means nothing if the world isn't fun to explore, which is where a lot of the old gens fail to do. I'd rather take a well made game with less to do than a more open ended game that's just poorly designed.
