"Sonic in Minecraft"Well, first PAC-MAN, now this.
I dunno man, some of Rare’s games really are the best of their eras. So, I saw this convo on Twitter, but people are saying that Nintendo Youtubers dictate a lot about retro game discussion, and honestly... yeah I agree. I'm not saying they shouldn't talk about their games, but they do tend to hype the hell out of the games they played when they were 7 as if they were some massive deal way back in the day when in reality, they weren't.
For example, old Rare games were supposedly treated as the holy grail of gaming back in the day, but looking at it, they really weren't. They might have been good, but they were no Mario 64, OoT, or Crash in terms of popularity, and yet, they play it up as if they were, especially for games that weren't even good like Conker. It doesn't help that they also dictate discourse about the good old days and how gaming companies now don't try anymore and **** because they didn't get the same thing that they played 20 years ago.
Again, yes they were. Sales doesn’t dictate popularity and People of that generation that grew up on those games are the ones that have fond memories of those games. Dismissing the popularity as “ah youtubers” is extremely disingenuous. And just retroactive history.
And that’s just in terms of sales. In terms of reviews and the like Banjo is one of the highest rated games of that generation. Sits at a 92 on Metacritic. Banjo-Tooie sets at a 90. People are just getting tired of hearing about banjo so now they’re like “ah it must mean it’s bad” as if global nostalgia means that the game must be bad.I have a few problems with this, firstly Wikipedia isn’t exactly the most trustworthy of sites, secondly this is assuming 0 people bought the Xbox Arcade version and 0 people bought Rare Replay which are simply not true. But hey let’s assume that only the N64 version was ever released for the continuity of this post. Add that with the fact that the N64 sold around 34 million and the PlayStation sold around 100 million and it’s easy to see, if the numbers are correct, why Croc sold as much as Banjo. A LOT of people who owned a 64 owned Banjo AND Banjo Tooie because what the poster seemed to ignore was that Banjo-Tooie was 4 spaces down with 3 million units as well.
For context of attachment rates is that Banjo and Tooie has about an 8.5% attachment rate while croc has about a… 0.8% attachment rate, and that’s being generous. You know what game does have a comparable PlayStation attachment rate to Banjo though? Final Fantasy VII
It’s pretty disingenuous to just wave off everything everyone from a specific era loves to “oh it’s the just popular because of influencers” collectathon games didn’t become a genre because of youtubers, indie games following the formula of Banjo like Hat in Time and Yooka-Laylee didn’t happen because of Youtubers. This is just people not understanding the difference between influence and sales.
This is not moreso on the quality of the games, but more on how overblown and overstated the reach and legacy on many of the games they covered sorta gets in the way of actual facts. Like, I used Rare games as an example, but if I had to elaborate, this isn't ke saying that games like Banjo aren't that good, but morseso that they've been pretty overstated in terms of reach and popularity. Heck, the N64 in general is an example if this, most Ninty Youtubers say it was one of Nintendo's most popular consoles that was looked back on as fondly remembered, but in reality, it was the worst performing Nintendo console at the time and it got dominated by the PS1, but with their words dominating retro game discussion, many belive the N64 was a much bigger deal than it actually was.I dunno man, some of Rare’s games really are the best of their eras.
DKC2 is a supreme example of a classic 2D platformer. And I still think Banjo Kazooie tops Mario 64.
Yeah, it is.Is this making sense?
I just find it interesting, I'm not saying it's really a big deal, let alone one to warrant a meltdown, I just wanted to have a discussion because I never really thought of that, and I wanted to hear your guy's thoughts.Yeah, it is.
But also-
Does it really matter?
I dunno, not directed at you, but I don’t see the point of starting a Twitter meltdown over this.
I mean I guess but a lot of Youtubers that bring up rare are often big fans of Crash and Spyro as well. There’s a reason those games did as well as they did recently with their remakes, because they’re just as beloved. It’s not a matter of which console is was more popular. It’s about the fact if you owned a N64 you loved the Rareware games. It’s just how it was. Just like if you owned a PlayStation you likely love FFVII, MGS, Crash, Tekken, and Spyro. Rareware single handedly carried the N64 for a good period of its lifetime. No wonder people have such affinity for the games. But there’s a double side to this coin. Well, if you want my opinion.I just find it interesting, I'm not saying it's really a big deal, let alone one to warrant a meltdown, I just wanted to have a discussion because I never really thought of that, and I wanted to hear your guy's thoughts.
I know this is definitely the case for Tekken 7, but are there any notable Tekken 3 YouTubers?Tekken
Not denying Rareware carried the N64, but I do think they may have been overstated just a smidge, and it didn't really help that those who overyhped the old Rare tend to be the leading drives in the beliefs that Rare now sucks because if their slight blunders on the 360 (imo, that hate was overblown too, Reloaded fixed a lot of **** that dragged down the original, and Nuts and Bolts wasn't even bad, but unfortunately that line of thinking dominated retro discussion for a while).I mean I guess but a lot of Youtubers that bring up rare are often big fans of Crash and Spyro as well. Certified Sonic Mania->Sonic Forces review momentIt's youtubers in general (and the real world too).
The whole narrative around Sonic for example is hugely built around what some rando youtubers are saying and that'll be repeated ad nauseum, no one cares about their own opinions on things, it's just repeating what some rando guy said from his couch (or) in his basement because they spoke well enough to convey their points.
And sure, Sonic's been all over the shop since going 3d but it's the same **** being regurgitated because some unfunny nerd said it. Having certain people you trust in regards to their opinions is important, you only have so much time and/or money, but it's also important that you still try to formulate your own view separate from them if possible.
People with a ton of charisma speak as if they're an authority on something (regardless of whether they actually are or are not) and you get droves of people believing it no matter what. That's just how things have been for a long time.
The Nintendo 64 had good games; it just didn't sell well, much like the Dreamcast or Wii U. Even if it didn't surpass the PS1 in terms of sales, people can still look back on it (and its games) fondly. This is not moreso on the quality of the games, but more on how overblown and overstated the reach and legacy on many of the games they covered sorta gets in the way of actual facts. I can’t wait for Sonic 2022 to rev up the hot take machine again.Certified Sonic Mania->Sonic Forces review moment
I don’t think think new Rare sucks. It is a shame we likely won’t get anything like the older games from them again but Sea of Thieves is phenomenal and I’m sure Everwild will be too. And to be completely fair the 64 did suck. For the most part. It lost all its 3rd party support. It’s the same reason the Wii U wasn’t that great either. Sure it had great games the Zelda games are at the tippy top of the console. Some of the best are on 64 and Wii U. But they’re so sporadic and few and far between that’s not even worth getting a Wii U to wait a year between games. Not denying Rareware carried the N64, but I do think they may have been overstated just a smidge, and it didn't really help that those who overyhped the old Rare tend to be the leading drives in the beliefs that Rare now sucks because if their slight blunders on the 360 (imo, that hate was overblown too, Reloaded fixed a lot of **** that dragged down the original, and Nuts and Bolts wasn't even bad, but unfortunately that line of thinking dominated retro discussion for a while).
Then again I think the N64 sucked ass so my personal bias may be a factor here
I'd make a drinking game out of it but even water would prove fatalI can’t wait for Sonic 2022 to rev up the hot take machine again.
3D Sonic reviews are literally a madlibs game at this point.I'd make a drinking game out of it but even water would prove fatal
Looks pretty neat. Will definitely give it a watch when it comes out.
The video is unavaible for me.
