I think this is the first month where I haven't played any of the new games they're re-releasing. lol

Have heard nothing but good things about Joe & Mac and Magical Drop. Spanky's Quest I've ironically heard being brought up in casual conversation on various gaming podcasts before, but have never done any personal research on. Baseball Simulator seems pretty straightforward.

Have been wanting to get into the Ninja Jajamaru Kun series for a long time now, so I'm glad it's being re-released here so I can try it out before picking up the Collection on Switch. I liked Haggleman as apart of Retro Game Challenge on DS so I'm hoping this lives up to it.

Japan probably wins this time with FE4, but oh well. Nothing eye opening this month,, but a solid month none the less IMO.

That Microsoft has been working on getting their cloud service on the Switch, which is something that some of the more credible leakers have said for months now.

Considering how chummy Microsoft has been with Nintendo, even having Switches in the background of their videos as of late, the two are REALLY getting along.

Also wym no double dipping. Did you forget Steve and Sephiroth?
I meant within a single pass. Dumb rule anyway. Though I still stand by my current theories. I’ll even go as far as to say it will be a double reveal at E3 with Crash and Chief, but Chief will be a bonus fighter rather then FP11. Then Lloyd/Augumon/Don-Chan/Solaire/Klonoa/Dig Dug/Nightmare/Yuri/Any other Namco character will be the final fighter in the fall.

Then we MIGHT get some more bonus content afterwards. Big emphasis on the might.

Anyway. WHAT LEAKED FROM THE COURT CASE?

Crash is probably my most wanted.

But if they pass over him for Chief, then no skin off my nose tbh.

I don't really associate Banjo OR Steve with Microsoft. To me, Banjo will always be tied to Nintendo, and Steve to Mojang(Yes, I know Microsoft owns them but I digress). Chief would be 'the' Microsoft character to me, and would blow the internet up.

A lot of "rules" aren't rules, they're just reasons people don't expect something to transpire. And sometimes those reasons hold a lot of weight.

Most times people bring up reasoning against something it's not to prove it can't happen but to explain why it happening is unlikely. Thinking of things as rules is oversimplifying the argument.

Even if we do get Chief, it will probably be in part due to the MS/Nintendo reasons people are currently entertaining, which is not a common occurrence. It will be an exceptional situation, and if DLC were to extend past this pass, "double dipping" would still remain an unlikely proposition. But it being impossible is only something claimed on the fringes of the debate.

I 'do' wonder if they'd reveal a 2nd character alongside Chief tbh, if he got in, that is.

Kinda like the Hero/Banjo scenario.

Chief can carry E3 in regards to Smash on his own, but he's also not really a character I'd imagine Japan would be popping off to super hard.

Unfortunately, that’s kinda just how it is. Unless it’s a worldwide phenomenon like Steve, the characters always gonna lean more western or eastern when it comes to their most prominent fanbase.

They negated that once with having two separate characters with huge fanbases from each region, but if there’s no double reveal (and I don’t think there will be) that effect probably won’t repeat.

I just hope this next one leans more western :nifty:

I think Chief and Crash is a little idealistic.

Well, leaning maybe, but they're not completely out of characters that would successfully appeal to both sides just yet.

So like, is it Gamepass, Rare Replay, or some other cloud service?

Because I'm 99% sure 99% of the games on Gamepass will cause the Switch to explode
Supposedly it's Gamepass.

Leakers have been talking about it for awhile now, the court docs just prove it has actually been a thing that's been happening.

I say supposedly, since a lot of the document is just big, black boxes of redacted text, but it shows Microsoft and Nintendo have been in talks about something.

Really though.

Theoretically Chief drops at E3.

Literally cannot top it. Some people will say Sora, which, sure, I'd argue would be huge, but.

Chief on a Nintendo platform, in Smash, would be just surreal to see. Seeing companies THIS close is bizarre.

To be fair I think with even just a cursory knowledge of where Microsoft wants to evolve their brand you can infer that they obviously had talks with Nintendo about getting gamepass/xcloud on the Switch, probably dating back several years. I don't think this development reveals anything new whatsoever.

It's just the potential outcome of those talks that we're left waiting for.

Does anybody here remember the online stuff for Mario Golf Toadstool Tour? There was this little tournament going on with a live-action announcer and everything, plus little micro-documentaries on and interviews with the playable roster. This isn’t just one of those phantom memories I have from my childhood, right?

I'm just gonna accept that, if it's not Itoi (which it feels like he wouldn't be causing issues himself), the issues with the EarthBound/Mother series are royalties regarding music sampling, as much as I thought they could fall under Fair Use but others think not including Nintendo's lawyers according to some old posts about this stuff (though they were even afraid of the Sky Runner music apparently, and while it is similar to the intro of Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who, it's clearly not the same but I guess it's similar enough to make lawyers nervous).

I guess Nintendo just doesn't think they can make a profit off of it if they just release it on a subscription service instead of on its own or in a more-expensive bundle/system thing like the mini systems.

This is the same company that made a last minute song rewrite for the intro of the Legend of Zelda because the copywrite for Bolero was off by just one year

Fwiw I agree with you.

Some people are looking at pure sales numbers about it, going "well... x series has sold more than Halo", but that's looking past the fact that Chief has the Sonic and Cloud factor where the significance of his inclusion and the resulting reaction is amplified and owing in part to the history of the character and their relation to Nintendo. Like you said, Chief wouldn't be the first Microsoft character in Smash, but Banjo and Steve are more Microsoft characters from a legal perspective than a perceptual perspective. Banjo is still most associated with Nintendo, and will remain that way until he actually gets more games, and Steve has never even been exclusive to the Xbox at any point in time. Chief is the mascot of that company; he is, sort of, the embodiment of the Xbox.

I mean Cloud isn't even a Sony character, but perceptually he was, to a not insignificant degree, and that added to the reaction.

In the past I compared Steve to Pac-Man and Master Chief to Cloud, insofar as I think the former two are more widespread in their fame and the latter two are more significant for what it means to join a Nintendo crossover. To that end I think the two groups elicit different kinds of reactions, even though it will all present indistinguishably.

It is funny how it doesn't feel like we've gotten a character like that in FP2 yet, in regards to your Cloud analogy that is. I'd argue that to a lot of people, Joker 100% felt that way in FP1, but for FP2... well, Steve is multi-platform and Sephiroth really isn't that much a shock since Cloud is here. Don't get me wrong, Sephiroth WAS a shock, but Final Fantasy 7 was already a thing.

I definitely don't want to get ahead of myself, but Banjo was at E3 2019, and I have no doubt that Steve would have been at E3 2020 had covid not ****ed everything up. With how much Nintendo and Microsoft are working together, E32021 feels like it'd be now or never for Chief.

I don't think there are any insurmountable issues for the Mother series at this point. Well, not for the first two. I think Nintendo can release them any time and in any way they want, and are simply holding on to them, waiting for the opportune time to use them strategically, as they know the cache those games hold when compared to other retro releases. I think they will release one or both when most advantageous. Either when they need to incentivize something, or when they need to pacify the fanbase. They're not in any rush to placate us right now.

Mother 3 has run into the problem where Nintendo feels like the game will be criticized for some of its content in the light of 2021, and are sitting on a translated release. I don't think they have any intention to release it, but at one point they did. I think the best hope for that is a remake.

I think the only characters that currently fit it are Sonic and Cloud, because while others may carry with them a greater association for another platform, the characters themselves aren't so monumental as to be emblematic of a system or competing company. Even if it's not the company that actually owns them.

Maybe Snake, but there was so much behind being the first third-party that being a staple of Sony systems just coalesced with that whole whirlpool of reactions. Also, Metal Gear had been slightly more platform agnostic than the FF7 branch of FF.

Fair enough.

I definitely try to keep my expectations low for the sake of it, but I'd be lying if I said this E3 wasn't making me anxious irt Smash lol.

Imagine getting anxious about how substantial the next smash reveal is gonna be, specifically because of the track record of previous E3 how epic those reveals were.

I don’t have to imagine.

Totally. When it comes to Master Chief, this does seem like a bit of a make or break moment. Not even because the DLC is ending soon but because who knows where Microsoft and Nintendo will be by the age of Smash 6. What Microsoft has done in the past few years is hugely atypical practice for competitors.

within the next 9001 years, I would only accept Waluigi being a fighter in Smash...if his reveal is a 11 minute rap video with him fighting the entire roster

XD I dunno, I just saw the Mario Golf Super Rush trailer today and I just felt like doing this. :p Rosalina will always cause my Ridley's pupils to dilate. I was going to do something more complex, but I just wanted to warm up.

Really, the game looks extremely fun, despite not having been that much into golf myself. I just remember playing Mini Golf when I was a kid.

I hope they do this stuff. I just read that apparently there were complications between NoA and NCL due to music sampling and the name of a clock enemy, though that was before the VC release so I guess they straightened it out; other people on twitter keep saying this legal stuff regarding the music is why they're not releasing it on the NSO service due to Nintendo likely not seeing a profit (but I know they're probably wrong), and apparently one of the EarthBound musicians mentioned the music sampling causing issues with getting it released in North America (this was in a Did You Know Gaming video).

I knew of the sampling stuff and all that, but I had hoped it could just be Fair Use stuff, I didn't realize one of the game's musicians actually talked about it.

Of course I thought they'd have the legal stuff settled but people on twitter made me unsure; I did think to myself "but wait, the yearly NSO subscription is more expensive than EarthBound itself on the VC, even if you add EB:B," but I'm not sure whether they pay people once then try to recover costs like normal or have to keep splitting profits with others...

Anyway though, I know really no one on twitter knows for 100% sure and I guess I should just stay optimistic.

Sure, the video section of the online part might radiate big-time horny energy, but there’s some absolute treasures. Right now, I suggest you guys take a look at “Mythra’s Cooking” before it’s wiped from the servers, it’s extremely creative and funny.
