I kinda notice that at major events only brawl players crowd for brawl grand finals, but everyone crowds around for melee grand finals. So I don't think necessarily the community all plays melee but favors melee the most.

I suppose that's true, but at Apex a lot of top melee players and myself went to watch M2K vs Brood and stayed for GFs.

I assume that brawl players get more entertainment from watching top level melee than melee players get from watching top level brawl.

This'd be the answer. Melee is a good spectator sport. You generally appreciate sports more when you know a bit about them too, and of course the general principles do translate between these games.

Most fighting game fans want to watch something exciting happen. Others can appreciate the effective application of textbook matchup knowledge in matches, even if they're drawn out and not exciting.

For some reason, the thing that gets my attention most with fighting game match videos of any kind are matches where I can recognise text book play. lol.

But generally speaking. Anybody can enjoy something that's fast and full of action. It's like the difference between an action movie and a psychological thriller.

Yeah I'd say they favor melee. Melee has so much hype and has more situations etc than brawl. IDK anything about 64 though.

Melee tends to be more exciting to watch. I know a lot of players that like Brawl and Melee equally or even favor Brawl, but there's no denying that Melee is usually faster and has hype combos.

Melee is just a more entertaining game and the hype around it is awesome, which Brawl players love to watch.

Brawl can be hype too, like Brood vs M2K at Apex.

This.

Yeah, I think it may seem that way but if there's a reason to be hyped there's a reason to be hyped regardless of game. I think both sides to a degree during GF are always willing to watch the other game.

It really depends on the GF, what is at stake, etc.

Pound V had a dream Melee GF's, and Brawl just didn't have enough of the top players to make it quite interesting. Ally vs Anti was quite funny still but very hyped at all.

But at Apex 2, there was the japanese pulling out amazing stuff in Brawl and that hyped Brawl quite a lot there.

I think it all really depends on the situation.

All I can say is that Genesis 2 will be another more Melee-oriented event (get hype for ICE!!!) while Apex 3 will feature Japanese AND European top Brawl players, which should be quite interesting.

yup. on the contrary too, we have had boring melee finals (puff dittos)

IMO brawl sets are the most exciting when both characters are at last stock high percent. and if they are different characters, dittos in brawl are not that fun to watch.

MLG was Brawl's peak. Now that it's over, I think we're going to see the Brawl community shrink and the Melee community continue to grow (from its low point in '08).

Yeah, I've been under the impression that it is just a matter of time before Brawl players start switching back to Melee since MLG dropped it. I feel like that's what most Brawl players were waiting for, but since it's been dropped there's basically a 0% chance of it getting picked back up and there is no real reason to play Brawl over Melee for even top players who mostly care about money (unless you actually enjoy competitive Brawl more, but I mean...).

Melee growing is a myth. You might see new faces, but you forget the ones that dissapear. And sadly, a lot of them do. =(

These guys have it. Show a random person on the street a Melee clip and a Brawl clip--they'll probably find the former more entertaining. If you don't play Brawl, it's not fun to watch, but any random person can get a kick out of Melee.

Also, surprised this hasn't been locked for Melee vs. Brawl yet.

the big tournaments I've been to when I first started I met some of the other newcomers and they never seem to stick with it

even meeting the old players who seemed to retire randomly

Is that why we have had record breaking attendance for melee at nationals each year for 3 years in a row? Nah melee is still growing and will continue to do so. However I dont think brawl is done growing either, yea being taken off of mlg was a pretty big punch to the gut but it wont kill it.

?????????

Pound V had approximately 250 attendants. Pound IV had 345.

Where do you get your information from?

(for anyone who thinks I'm hating, please stop being ignorant ; I love Melee but I'm not gonna be completely DELUSIONAL)

He probably meant '08, '09 '10, because you know, 2011 just started.
Genesis will probably beat out Pound V, and might go beat Pound IV.

this late (years after people started playing) its pretty hard for newcomers to really get involved with such a steep learning curve...

and theoretically the more established, long-time players, the steeper the learning curve actually becomes to be "competitive"

it just isn't fun for people to get ***** effortlessly by everyone...

i guarante that basketball will be more entertaining to watch than golf or fishing tournaments even if you follow golf or fishing. and in that case, melee is basketball
