Well, yes and no. The smash ball is listed under "How to Play" and not "Items" I am guessing for a reason.

The only reason I can consider to have merit is that the FS is considered another technique within itself as opposed to being an item. For all of you out there to quickly try to route me by saying "SAKURAI SAYS IT'S AN ITEM!" I am not saying that it is not. I am saying that is not like an item that you are thinking that it is.

Sakurai mentions it as an item, because it is a seperate object floating around. However, just because he says it is an item, does not mean it shares the same item screen as the rest, as it is simply not like the gooey bomb, banana peel, etc...

It is a move, granted through the use of an "item," and because it is considered a "technique" this can only mean one thing...

That smash orbs will not be able to be switched off, as you would be turning off a technique. I am going to get flamed really hard by the elitist audience, but that is only because they fear that my words hold true...

I am just saying. If it was not considered a technique, it would have appeared under the yellow tab as opposed to being under the blue one. It is a new technique, and not an item, therefore, you will not be able to switch it off.

He doesn't just say "item." He uses the Japanese "aitemu" which is specifically used for items in a game context. He doesn't say "mono," which is more general.

It's an item. It appears randomly, and it can come out of crates and capsules. It couldn't be any simpler.

Final Smashes are techniques.

Smash Balls are items.

The Smash Ball is seen under 'Techniques' because the update is about Final Smashes.

A minority can only flame so hard. The majority of competitive players turn items off because they make the game too random for when money is on the line, not because they just plain don't like them.

Right, but if it was simply an item like the rest, then the update would be placed under the items tab as opposed as "How to Play."

The smash ball acts as a trigger to access that certain characters extra move, and because it needs the trigger to active the extra move it will remain on because of that.

The Smash Ball is an item. The Final Smash is a technique. So, yes, you will be able to turn of the smash ball because it is an item.

Do you really think that the developers would make it impossible to turn off a crazy item like the smash ball? They know how much a lot of people like to play raw matches without randomnessj, just mano a mano. If they didn't include the simple option of turning it off, I'm sure most of the competitive community would revolt.

Exactly my point. Although the Smash Ball is an item, it is listed under the How to Play as a trigger to access a certain characters extra move...

Which is not an item.

One things for certain; whether the developers decided to make it impossible or not would not be because of an individual gaming crowd.

and of course there is always the possibility that I am wrong, but I can also be right as well.

Having an item stay on for the entirety of a match is not unheard of; especially if it's purpose is to summon a characters unique move.

We wouldn't flame you for thinking that it is a possibility that the smash ball might not be on the item switch, we would flame you for saying "they would only flame me cause they fear it" mentality that a lot of the less informed casual scene tends to adhere to. Even if we can't turn off the smash balls, a majority of us will still play it competitively. Even still, it is silly to assume it will be a feature that can't be turned off in any fashion, even if it is not considered an item by normal means.

I actually wonder if this will be true too. Saying it's fact isn't smart but I think we should definitely consider the possibility that you might not be able to turn them off. Though I doubt it.

My guess is that Nintendo will do the *smart* thing and give us an option to disable Smash Balls. It would be an extremely bad idea for them to not include this option.

From what I can recall the Smash Ball appears as an item on the screen either in containers or randomly... but whether it's effected by the same item appearance rate or not could be possible...

You got me completely wrong.

The way I said that was so that if I "was" flamed as hard as I expected that I might, that the flaming would be because of the fact that they had a fear that what I say might hold true, and for those certain individuals, they completely loathe the idea of items.

and don't call yourself an elitist MookieRah; I hold that word down in the trenches with the term scrub as derogatory remarks of a person's playstyle, and from the posts that I have read around the board that you make, I hold high respect for your wisdom. Don't demean yourself.

Competitive works best to convey the meaning of your particular playstyle; elitist is a term that sullied itself here, as well as scrub, as being insulting groups of certain players.

It is not really "silly" MookieRah as it is an unfortunate variable.

Well it would be silly for Sakurai to include an unfortunate variable is the thing :-P. Surely he realizes that some people, even casuals, might want to play a bit without it. It's nice to have the option and there is no good reason not to.

That said, it might end up being like crates and capsules and you don't have control over it at all if items are turned on. Actually it logically fits into that kind of category, although it's not logical for that category to exist in the first place. If one were to give us the option to include some items but not a select few that is really stupid IMO.

Personally I think that Final Smashes will have its own toggle setting somewhere next to the Item Switch.

Nah, knowing Smash I think Sakurai would want there to be a way to change the frequency of how often balls appear. I actually do doubt it will be located on the item switch, but I think that there will be a way that the Smash Balls come out alot more, alot less, or not at all(off) somehow.

Think about it. In one vid in Aryman's thread, not one smash ball appears. In others, like 3 appear. I think that Sakurai will have it so you could change the frequency to make those who like the smash balls more of them, and that just want a plain battle, none of them.

Well, it wouldn't hurt of course...

but I wouldn't consider them dumb for not allowing the option.

I would, for the sheer fact that there isn't a good reason not to XD. Having more options is better than less, and although Sakurai might have a vision of smash balls everywhere, that doesn't mean it's a good executive decision to force upon the entire fanbase.

I don't think it really matters, smash ball will most likely be able to be turned off.

Even the mightiest statue shows weather....

Come on, Brawl has to have a flaw somewhere.

But seriously though, this is the same man who added Dr. Mario because he liked his music.

I wouldn't put it past him to go, "ME LIKEY SMASH BALLS!"

sora rep: "Sir? What of those who do not wish to play with them?

Sakurai: "....wut?"

Sora rep: "nevermind. -.-"

I personaly think there is a distinct possibility that you cant turn off smash balls. I personaly dont care. when I play Im going to have them on either way. its not like I am a tourney goer anyways. but from the tourney goers point of view I can understand why they would be mad about a forced random variable. its not that they think items arnt fun, but if you were copeteing in a money match, you wouldnt want some smashball be the reason you lost 500$. but I am sure the tourney goers ware resiliant and would find every nook and cranny to the final smashes so they can make them alot less effective. ormaybe they would make it against the rules to break the smash ball when it appears on the field, IDK I am just throwing out ideas.

Well it's not so much the random factor either. If that was the only thing off with them then we would really really debate about their inclusion. The smash ball is earned, and because of it's flight patterns there is gonna be some fighting for the smash ball. The thing that makes it all break apart is how good some of them are and how crappy others are. Because of the nature of most final smashes, the lacking of that one solid KO it offers is a HUGE detriment competitively and would imbalance characters that might not be bad from any other aspect. DK is taking a huge hit with his sloppy and practically useless Final Smash, meanwhile Sonic and Bowser eat their opponents face with virtually no skill at all.

It's an item, pure and simple.

It appears at random, people get it at random, and it's got a chance of actually DOING anything. There is less technique required than there is luck required - get over it..

What Is A Final Smash?

The Final Smash is a secret skill that can be performed but once…and only after obtaining an item called the Smash Ball, which is a precious item, indeed.

The basic gist of it? I suppose you could say it’s kind of like a powerful and personalized hammer. (Or maybe not…)

You can look forward to experiencing the glowing personality behind each of the many Final Smashes!

I believe the SmashBall is an item. And don't say it's not because it's not in the item section. We could all say that if the SmashBall was updated tomorrow as an Item, it would be as unsatisfying as the "YOU MUST RECOVER!!" Update.

Sakurai has called in an item on more than one occasion. I think he takes priority over you.

I personally don't think final smashes will be enough to catapult an otherwise average character into high tier, or bring a good character down in quality.

Final Smashes aren't the be-all end-all value of a character. Its just an extra special attack with a lot of potential. If I'm going to be disadvantaged by playing DK, its certainly not because of his FS. Its because he's an average/sub par character. Of course, it would be great if everyone's FS was epic and uber powerful, but that's not what we have here. If I'm going to play as DK against a character with a better FS, I can't wait! Bring it on. It'll be even more satisfying to beat them.

You guys should take the perspective that, if YOU get the Smash Ball, your opponent DOESN'T. Even if your own personal FS isn't that great, at least you prevented your opponent from pulling off an amazing attack against you. I'd say that's just as important as dodging or recovering.

Item or not, the lack of an option to disable it somehow would be assholish. Sorta like not being able to turn off Mario Power Tennis' Powershots. *shudder*

MEEH. WRONG.

Turning off smash balls would only cut off access the particular technique, a technique that is not part of the regualr skillset of a character.

If Smash Balls couldn't be turned off, there would pretty much be no "skill" tournaments anymore. Whoever got the ball open first, has a higher chance of winning. Thus, it is then a "luck" tournament. I'm sure the guys developing the game have thought about this.

You don't understand. Being defaulted one stock per match because you have an excellent FS and the other player doesn't is a HUGE deal from a competitive stand point. That is more of an imbalance than a lot of the typical balancing issues that are awry in Melee. I do not promote furthering the imbalance of Brawl.

I do get that. You took that out of the context of my post.

I just don't think FS's will be the deciding factor of matches. You still need to be good with your character to win, you'll be fighting normally the majority of the match. People are giving FS's too much weight.

Plus, how friggin hard is it to grab a Smash ball? It doesn't really matter where it appears, because if your opponent gets to it first, they'll hit it and probably knock it towards you, then you can break it. I think if we play with Smash balls long enough, we'll develop strategies for what to do when one appears. It'll be pretty interesting to 'protect' the Smash ball by fighting off your opponent, and after they go flying, take the ball for yourself. It seems like everyone is only thinking, "OMG SMASH BALL I BETTER GET THAT RIGHT AWAY!". No one seems to think of how they can take advantage of their opponent's blind desire for the ball.

Most of the FS's seem to have a way to avoid damage, like just dodging Super Sonic, and others can just wiff completely, like Meta Knight. If we play with Smash balls enough, you'll know what to expect from each character's FS, and if you're a good Smash player, you'll probably be able to avoid the majority of pain.

The only FS's I can see as just ****** you are probably Giga Bowser and the Landmaster. At least in Bowser's case, you'll probably be winning anyway, so what's 1 stock? You can also probably survive a Landmaster assault with lots of edge hopping, taking advantage of the invincibility frames. Or if the level is complex enough, you can hide under platforms and in small spaces or behind walls, and make it tough for the tank to get to you.

And don't forget, just because your opponent got the ball, it doesn't mean they'll get to use it. Most characters will have to be on the ground to activate their FS, I'd imagine, so you could just juggle them and keep them in the air, then take the ball when it gets knocked out of them.
