Important The Ridley for SSB4 Thread - End of an Era

Final boss =/= main villain. Those two things are separate from one another and CAN line up but in no way need to. Bowser can be the final boss as many times as he wants, but the fact of the matter is that Ridley has definite and explicit importance to Metroid and its plot and its events, regardless of if he is the last thing you kill. And he is the only boss to carry that importance to most of the series.

EDIT: In fact, you can be the final boss and not be important at all. So obviously you can do the opposite, not be the final boss, and be extremely important.

I agree with this. I'm not disputing it. I'm just saying that Bowser is in every main mario game as the final boss and main villain of that particular story, while Ridley is only in most metroid games and is not always the main villain. I'm not saying he's not the main villain overall, but like in metroid prime 3 for example, He was just one of the boss fights without that much relavence to the story of that game, while dark samus was the main villain. In the original metroid, he was a rather important boss, but mother brain was the main villain of that game. Overall, with games like super metroid and such, it's safe to say he's the villain of metroid, (and Samus even explicately says it in other m), but he's not always the main villain of each specific game, while bowser is(not counting non cannon games like superstar saga).

If Ridley's well done as a boss, I won't be as upset that he's not a character due to the other cool changes made. However, Ridley is definitely one of the only choices, with another choice being an AT.

And in a theoretical universe where a dime-sized captain commanding an army of plant-men against the ultimate king of evil while on Retro DK girders while wearing a Bunny Hood and whacking people with paper fans, people are concerned that Ridley is too big?

I guess Meta Ridley is the same, but Smash Bros. was never canon. You could pass him off as another Ridley.

Eh, if they have to have two Ridleys it simply makes more sense to just use the Other M clone instead in every way possible, especially since it's on Pyrosphere, a location from Other M.

It's probably because Ridley has always been a more personal threat to Samus instead of the entire galaxy, like Mother Brain or Dark Samus.

@Smash_Veteran_Amtoj: While I of course can't be certain of this because I'm not Satori, but my guess is that people who share your opinion on Ridley's role are having trouble viewing him as a person, rather than some creature you keep running into. Ridley as a character though is so much more capable than any boss fight could ever show. The reason Bowser is so accepted is because he's been playable for so long already in other games that people are just used to it, they grew up with it.

You're forgetting the part where he lead a Space Pirate attack in the beginning. Pretty sure that part's been mentioned a bunch in the past few days, actually.

Nintendo will keep making Smash games even after Sakurai's dead (if the company is still around that time). It's a huge money maker for them and it would be foolish to stop at this rate.

I hope that Retro picks it up. I don't want Sakurai to make Smash Bros. anymore.

To whoever is saying Ridley "fits better as a boss": I love bosses, but you know what I like more? Playable characters! I would love to see a Bowser just as epic as the 3D World one, but I prefer him playable, I don't know how I would react if Bowser was ever playable in a main series game, for me, the best part about any crossover game in general is playing as characters you can't play elsewhere, specially Smash, and seeing as Zelda and possibly Ganondorf(as he was teased at the end of the video) are going to be playable in Hyrule Warriors, Ridley is the only character that wouldn't be playable elsewhere, only in Smash.
Btw, I just got an argument with a guy about K. Rool and Bowser's size, I then asked f Kraid would work and he said 'yes', I then asked why and he mentioned Mini-Kraid from Super Metroid, basically what he said is: it works because it has already been done before(where is the punch trough internet button when you need it?)

Don't know why this says it's replying to someone, but I can't figure out how to change that so ignore the fact that this says it's a reply because it's not. (also if someone could tell me how to change it that would be great.) I think people are misunderstanding what I'm talking about with Ridley. I'm not saying he's not important or that he's not the main villain of metroid. All I'm saying is that imo at least, his role in each individual game he's in is generaly less important than bowser's role in most of the individual games he's in. Usualy, Bowser is the cause of the plot, the reason mario goes through the entire game, with the end goal the entire time being to defeat him, and the game is over when he is defeated. Regardless of the fact that Ridley is the main villain of the metroid series, and the most important character next to samus, he's never had a role where the entire plot is based on him and the end goal through the entire game is to defeat him. I'm not saying that makes him unimportant, I'm just saying Ridley=/= Bowser. I hope this clarifies things a little.

I feel like people are misunderstanding my point about Ridley. I'm not saying he's not important. I'm saying that in a lot of Bowser's roles, he is the reason for the plot. The story begins Because of bowser, mario goes through the entire game because of bowser, the end goal the entire time is to beat bowser, and the story is over when bowser is beaten. To a certain extent, bowser IS the plot. Even though Ridley is inarguably the main villain of metroid, and the most important character next to samus, he has never had a role in any single game as important as that. Really all I'm trying to say is Ridley=/= bowser.

No Metroid story ends with Ridley no, but the entire story of Metroid was started because Ridley killed Samus' parents, if he had not done that Samus would just be a regular civilian.

He also sets Metroid Prime, Super Metroid and Other M's stories in motion (iirc he's the reason the distress signal is sent out in Other M), and of course without him the Norion invasion in Prime 3 wouldn't have started, which was where Dark Samus corrupted Samus and the other Hunters thus kicking that story off. In Prime the game is all about hunting him down until you discover the Phazon Mines where phazon itself becomes sort of a general plotpoint, although you're still in pirate territory searching for Ridley, so maybe it's only once you begin collecting the artifacts to stop the planet's corruption. In Super Metroid it's all about hunting down Ridley and getting the Baby Metroid until you kill him and see the Baby Metroid has escaped. In Other M it's all about Ridley until you find out that there is a whole lot of other **** going on in the station, albeit you don't know that it's him at the time. In Prime 3 it's both a mission to stop the Space Pirates (aka Ridley) and Phazon, both eradicated not long before each other. So while Ridley isn't the central plot from start to finish, he is at least that for over half the game the majority of his appearances.

Ridley is crucial to the plot in most of the games he's in, the only one where he isn't really that important and could have been skipped out on is Fusion. Even in Zero Mission he still plays a somewhat important part by being the gatekeeper of Mother Brain alongside Kraid, not to mention having built the last boss of the game.
