They could also be warning sirens for lava, something that also disappears on the Final Destination version of the stage.
The whole lava thing is really interesting, I've been thinking about it... the FD version of Pyrosphere lacks it, it also doesn't have the "glow" the lava gives to normal Pyrosphere, and now these lights, which seem to be shining (or "on") on normal Pyrosphere but "off" on the FD version. Then there's the two purple things on the bottom side of the stage which look different between the FD and normal version of the stage, conveniently facing the (supposed) lava at the bottom. If these were minor things I'd think the FD version would have them too, but no. I feel like they're definitely hiding something about Pyrosphere, and while it might be Ridley as a boss, sure, it may also be any other hazard (which at this point looks to be lava, which is of course wise to keep secret right now as it would give away too much). But something seems suspicious!

So I've been thinking. I need proof of wording from the man himself, but I've been thinking.

Have Kotake and Koume officially been stated to be, quote, "bosses" of Gerudo Valley? Not "stage hazards", not "trouble", but "bosses"?

If so, taking what Sakurai has said at face value, Ridley is the first ever boss (NOT Stage Hazard) in Smash Bros to have platforms during his boss battle.

And I know precedence means jack, but its some food for thought.
I would be surprised if they weren't bosses, to be honest with you.

The lack of any new DK, Kirby, or Star Fox stage makes me think that those franchises will also have stage hazards/bosses.

The stage WAS selectively named Pyrosphere. I'm wondering if those other non-lava background elements are signals to the stage changing locations and hazards? I mean, the Reset Bomb Forest at first seemed to just be that tower-looking area with reset bombs going off in the background.

But lo and behold the stage actually changes MASSIVELY to take place inside the reset bombs.

I love Ridley. Really I do. I want to believe in his inclusion, and I'm slowly becoming more confident in his inclusion.

But the whole "100% confident" thing is getting your hopes up way too high. There's quite a bit going in Ridley's favor, but in the other side's defense Ridley was shown off during the boss portion of the Direct, obviously hinting that he is in fact a boss.
Now Sakurai has done some pretty weird things, so him lying about Ridley is certainly up his alley (also considering that there is more than one Ridley, but again I think that the Ridley we saw is playable or else he's a boss). In conclusion, I wouldn't be so confident. I'm staying neutral (leaning towards yes) on the situation so that I don't set myself up for possible disappointment if Ridley is in fact a hazard.

I admire everyone's loyalty towards Ridley, but it has to be toned down a little bit. It's to the point that people look down on the Ridley fanbase, when in reality it's just people rooting for a character that they love. It's quite sad, and it will be even more so if Ridley's fate is a stage boss. I've prepared myself for the possibility, and in all honesty I probably won't be incredibly upset. When I first saw Ridley's shadow in the Direct I thought he was done for, and all I said was "oh no, Ridley!" I was sad, but there are many other characters that would make this game awesome for me. Little Mac is in, Palutena and Mewtwo are really likely, and K. Rool is always a possibility. I'm honestly not sure what to think about Ridley, but I know what I'm hoping for.

Not sure why I typed this up, I guess I just felt my opinion had to be heard.

The reason I differentiate between Stage Hazard and Boss is that the Boss name implies it can be defeated. (Shut up, the Ultimate Chimera doesn't count) And it may sound like desperate reaching, but the two witches might just hang out in the background and hurl curses at the stage, being completely immune to harm. Just in general changing up the stage like Kraid.

Sakurai's implications about Ridley logically means he is meant to be fought head on and defeated. If so, he would officially be the first boss to have something besides a flat plane or a FD platform as a battlefield.

Of course, it could just be Sakurai trying something new.

Technically, whether Ridley ends up playable or not, Sakurai didn't lie either way. He said "other boss character appearances." Ridley is, by definition, a boss character, but Bowser is also a boss character, who is playable. See what I mean? Also the words, "Ridley is a stage hazard/not playable" were never uttered, so he wasn't officially confirmed nor denied. Sakurai worded things in such a way that he's actually correct no matter the outcome.

Dude's cleverly evil.

That Ridley. What a crazy kook with his person eating.

EDIT: Of course Sakurai's not lying. Implications are implications. No matter what happens, nobody was 'lied to' here. Misdirected to think one thing when another is happening? Fully possible, likely even. But we have no concrete confirmation of any role, so we can't say he lied about anything.

Funny how 6 people liked your post, but nobody liked mine considering it mentioned Ridley as a hazard.
Most people that frequent the Ridley support thread actually want playable Ridley. I wouldn't worry about the likes though, they are truly irrelevant. It used to be the opposite right after the Direct. People were liking the pessimistic posts and ignoring the optimistic posts. People will see what they want to see.

Sakurai lying about Zero Suit Samus is somehow a lie about Ridley's role in the game?
It's just an instance showing that Sakurai can and has lied to us before. That's all.

He didn't even really lie about Zero-Suit Samus either. I mean, "all jokes are lies," and whatnot. But misdirection is probably the more accurate term.

That's not the issue. What he said about Zero Suit Samus literally has nothing to do with my post, which was about how Sakurai isn't lying about Ridley since he didn't even explicitly say anything.

EDIT: Also people look down on the Ridley Fanbase no matter what for literally any reason. Asking us to support Ridley less so people stop antagonizing us isn't actually going to pan out that way.

I'm all in for playable Ridley, but there is always that tiny voice buried deep in the crevices of my brain that keeps saying, "But what if he isn't..."

...

I believe that tiny voice will be forever silenced on June 10th.

Why isn't it a good idea? I cannot fathom why it is a "bad" idea? Is there a reason?
He thinks you will be disappointed if Ridley actually ends up a boss and nothing more. I'm personally gonna stay excited for playable Ridley. I mean I'm gonna be disappointed if he isn't in even if I tell myself he won't be playable.

But I'm sure he is playable so I'm not worried. :denzel:

Ah; I see, thank you for the clarification. As you are probably already aware, I am not going to be disappointed in the event that Ridley is not playable. I have the unfortunate habit of falling in love with ideal characters that aren't the main or secondary character, the antagonist. I am already disappointed because I am aware that Hades is not going to be playable in Smash. I am already disappointed because I am aware that Ganon is not going to be playable in Smash (albeit he might be playable as a Final Smash). I am already disappointed because I am aware that Black Shadow is not going to be playable. So, Ridley is no different. King K. Rool is no different. I have already contemplated the notion that we might get nothing for Metroid a LONG time ago. Prior to Brawl actually.

Personally, whatever Ridley's place in SSB4 will be, it will be revealed at E3, just to get more viewers on Nintendo's Direct.

Though, whether or not Ridley is the first character showcased for SSB4 is another story.

I thought that the first character showcased for SSB4 was revealed a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago.

In three weeks, everyone will know the fate of Ridley. I will lose that special feeling of knowing something that not everyone else does.

@ Pacack Pacack : I am pretty sure they wouldn't make a Metroid game based off the manga NOW after the response to a game that delved at all into Samus' character or backstory as a priority. People basically want to explore an open-ended alien world, do cool Metroid stuff, and do completion runs. I'm not disagreeing with those priorities myself, but I usually prefer games like the Prime Trilogy that provide some level of universe expansion if nothing else.

I dunno. I just doubt it's going to happen now and we'll probably get a Prime 4 or some other kind of thing instead.
The reasons I would like to see it are

A: Other M was a poor excuse for fleshing out Samus. This could do a far better job. Not everything that delves into Samus' backstory will be received negatively because of Other M. It was received badly because it was done badly.

B: It's canon. The Manga is a canon part of the Metroid timeline and is barely known. Using the Manga's story as a base for a game would introduce people to this canon in a way that is familiar to Metroid fans.

C: The way I'm imagining it, it would be a Prime-esque game that retells the story of the original Metroid in more depth. It would be an entirely different experience than what we've had before because of it being an HD, 3D reimagining of a game that we've only seen in 2D before. (Of course, it would be Pre-Metroid on rather than just Metroid, but you know what I mean.) And even if it doesn't happen my way, there's nothing stopping it from becoming a game like you're wanting.

D: The characters. They are so many great characters that are either not seen in the Metroid games or which are underdeveloped (Ridley). Old Bird, Gray Voice, Kreatz, Mauk, Ridley, and Samus herself. I would love to see these characters fleshed out or introduced in the games. However, that's just a personal thing.

This sort of thinking is what I was talking about not 1 page ago. No single other support thread gets as much dislike as this one. Don't you think maybe there is a REASON for that or do you really think it's the dragon they get angry over?

Of course there is a reason for it. I am not going to assert that the Ridley fan-base is the most elegant or articulate fan-base around. I would; however, declare that it is one of the most passionate. Sometimes, ignorance is met with malice. That malice is reciprocated in a perpetual cycle.

Ridley's always gotten flak from the other fanbases, probably because of how loud and supportive we are for him. But it's not just him though, I've seen plenty of backlash towards other popular characters like Palutena or K. Rool.

Of course, having to deal with ignorant detractors and trolls for 15 years is another factor.

Quite. Sometimes those who support lesser beings are jealous as they can see everything going for other popular characters. Although; honestly, the Ridley fan-base is more frequently criticized.

More popular something it's the bigger it's backlash. That's generally how these things work.

I've heard this remix in dozens of videos but couldn't find the actual soundtrack. Now I have.

Perfect to listen to on this thread as we prepare for the epic climb to the climax three weeks away.

It's not like it's a bad concept, really. A game that deviates from the usual formula of the series and aims for something different (in this case, a starightforward, storytelling action game) is not necessarily a wrong move, and in fact it is welcomed every once in a while.

It's kind of like Metal Gear Rising, which drops the usual stealth gameplay the series is known for for a more dinamic playstyle. As a Metal Gear, it doesn't really stand tall among the other entries, but as a stand alone game, it really shines.

Other M would've probably gone through a similar approach. It would've made the game significantly more linear than other games, but it would still focus on employing every possible asset into its design in the direction it was meant to go and try to give a new, fresh feel to the series. And it seemed all the assets where there to make it a good game in that regard; different, but fun and engaging nonetheless.

Now, the concept was very nice, but the execution... well...

The issue is, we live in a world where people still think the Prime trilogy are awful games because they aren't Super Metroid. Association or lack of association with specific games will make or break peoples' opinions of games more often than not, and that's just how it goes. The less it is like games people like / more it is like the games they don't like, the worse their initial assumptions are likely to be.

And people will spread it like wildfire until it's like some kind of horrifying STD given to the internet for no reason other than "mindless internet shenanigans". It's what happens, even if it really shouldn't.

I'm still not sure why some people seem to be so heavily concerned with those of us who may or may not be raising our hopes to what they feel is an impossible high. Like, it goes over my head. Why is it any concern of yours that I might be getting my hopes up? Not trying to sound like a jerk here at all, but if I make the choice to get excited and invested in something - whether that be Ridley or something else - I also acknowledge that the possibility of disappointment is very real. I don't make the game, I have no control over what the final decisions may or may not be. And granted, not everyone may be aware that they might wind up being disappointed. But to actively discourage us from getting our hopes up through what I personally see as a place of such intense self-righteousness is, quite frankly, patronizing and rather insulting.

My problem with the concept of him never touching the ground seems to me like he wouldn't be playing by the rules of Smash. I mean that might just be me, and you can try to tell me it's his playstyle. But it doesn't make sense to me if he's always flying.

That would essentially give him a ridiculously overpowered recovery. So if you follow Sakurai Logic of "He'd be slow" that would likely mean that:

1) He's strong
2) Would be Heavy

So if he's strong, heavy, and then has an unlimited recovery, he'd be the most overpowered character in Smash. Hence, why I don't believe he has an unlimited flying thing. That would basically break the rules of Smash. Yes, I DO think this hurts him more, because there is no freaking way that SHOULD happen. Giving him unlimited flying would be incredibly overpowered.

What about characters who can hardly jump? Ganondorf? Well, he's screwed. There's no way he could get up to Ridley.

My stance on this, is that the Ridley we saw in the Direct is a stage hazard boss thing on Pyrosphere. The fact that he never touches the ground simply convinces me that he's meant to be a NPC, simply because the mere concept of him always flying doesn't make any sense in terms of how Smash Bros operates.

I find it highly unlikely the Ridley we saw was playable. Could we get a different Ridley as playable? Maybe. Was it the one in the Direct? Probably not.
The irony about that statement is that Jigglypuff is very light, and yet it's as slow as molasses while on the ground.

In Ridley's point of view, he doesn't necessarily have to be heavy to be powerful, as even if he ends up being lightweight, he has the brute strength to make up for the low weight.

In other words, not all heavyweights are heavy hitters, and there are some heavy hitting lightweights out there.
