Seeing you talk about the Metroid games made me realize that I have NEVER played a Metroid game. Quite sad huh? I think Smash Bros was the first to introduce me to the franchise via Samus really, but it seems like an interesting bunch of games, and I've really grown to like Samus (and Ridley now). I've been thinking on maybe trying a game out, so what would you guys suggest would be the first Metroid game I give a shot at?
You're not alone there.

My first Metroid game was Fusion, and I think it was a pretty excellent intro point. It's the only one besides the dreaded Other M where Samus talks, which lets you in on her character better than the others. It's also a bit more linear than some of the others, which can be beneficial if you're not used to having basically no idea what's going on. :p The biggest problem is probably that it's the final game in the timeline so far, and some of its mechanics are different than we're used to (you have to unlock the colored doors instead of shooting them with different weapons, what?), but it also has the simplest control scheme (except Zero Mission, which has the same one). Speaking of Zero Mission, it too has some more linear elements that can make it easier i For a first-timer, I'd have to recommend either Fusion or Zero Mission, which is funny since they're literally on opposite ends of the story.

Fix this.

Note that you eventually get an item that lets you move as freely underwater as you do out of it, and it even comes with a hover feature while underwater. You have got to experience Sanctuary Fortress at least once.

Don't let what I've said above deter you!
Oh, I finished Torvus Bog, so I have the...what is it, the Gravity Booster? Now that I don't need it anymore. I'll get back to Echoes eventually, but I really just haven't felt the drive, especially since the rest of my complaints (and all of your points about the pacing and the overall feel of Aether) still stand. I also look forward to the Light Suit, because I really don't like Dark Aether. I assume that comes in Sanctuary?

...I...

...but...

...dat music, tho.

...dat ambience, tho.

...dat mysterious beauty, tho.

...dat Chykka, tho.
All of this is accomplished better (in my opinion) by both Phendrana Drifts and the wrecked ship from Prime 1.

...except for the Chykka, which I didn't actually like all that much anyway.
:awesome:

Metroid Prime 1-3 soundtracks are amazing. I have them on my iPod too. Have you ever driven down the road to the Flaaghra theme, Metroid Prime Essence theme, or Quadraxis theme? BAD-ASSSSSS! GET OUT OF MY WAY! Everything musically and atmospheric about these games is perfect to me, no matter the gameplay. Ambience is heaven.

****, that looks awesome.
C: Glad you liked it!!!.....I wish i had seen all the likes and replies to the post earlier....but with this cold and looking at my purple borrego blanket made me want to go to sleep....I listen to like 6 different remixes of Ridley's Theme...and 4 of Kraid, Torvus Catacombs is one of the themes that relaxes me the most....I like the second version of Tallon Overworld.....and when i feel cold, i listen to Norfair.....and if i want to literally cry, i listen to Rundas' Theme....

Ok, I admit, that's adorable<3

Also, why all this hate for Prime 3? :/ I'd say Prime 3 is the worst in the Trilogy, but it is still a damn good game. ^^ Echoes is my favorite, since it's so long and hard (hehehe). Prime 1 had all the effect, Prime 2 was the long, hard and Epic, and Prime 3 had the best controlls. :3

Zero Mission is definitely the best starting point for someone looking to get into the franchise. It's a short, quick-paced game with many player-friendly options available for one if the need arises. It's where I started and still go back to it every now and then. I also find it to be the deepest and most non-linear entry of the franchise. For that reason, it is a speedrunner's paradise, since ZM's map has a plethora of shortcuts and a large variety of power-ups that may or may not be skipped (usually they can). The soundtrack is one of my favorite from any game, but that's just me.

Here's the order of games to play according to me:

Zero Mission -> Super Metroid -> Prime Trilogy -> Fusion

Prime 3 > Prime 2 imo. The atmosphere and bosses in Prime 3 are just too damn good. Meta Ridley, Rundas, Gandrayda, Ghor, Omega Ridley, Dark Samus are all epic and memorable fights. Don't even get me started about the music. Rundas' and Omega Ridley themes are glorious.

Well, as I said, I love all Three of them, so yeah. ^^ But, I must say, actually, that in a way, the bosses in Prime 3 really disappointed me. Yes, the Ridley battles were awesome, and the friends-turned-bad battles were neat, but... there were too many small bosses. ._. And small bosses in Metroid feels so... off. There were only a few that were actually huge.

I found the small bosses really refreshing. Yes, I prefer big/giant ones, but battling Rundas, Ghor and Gandrayda was damn fun.

Also, Omega Ridley is the best boss fight against Ridley so far.

To me Prime 3 is as good as Prime and better than Prime 2. That being said, all three games are amazing.

Well, once again, don't get me wrong, the smaller bosses were well made and all. ^^ But, they wearen't very Epic. But oh well, let's hope Retro's next Metroid blows them all out of the water~

While I definitely respect your opinion, I have to disagree (again lol). I found the battles epic and memorable. The size isn't what make Metroid bosses epic. For example, battling SA-X in Metroid Fusion is one of the best moments in the series. And for the majority of the battle, SA-X is the same size as Samus.

True, size =//= Epic, but they just felt kinda, I don't know, un-Epic still? However, glad you are one of those to respect opinions. Those people gets rarer. :p

Anywho, Ridley. No Ridley today. That's both good and bad.

Dunno about Sanctuary, but Torvus Bog is basically the worst area I've ever played through in my life. The Wastes are fine, but I despise water levels in general, and especially that one. Again, I've yet to play Sanctuary, but I like Tallon IV considerably more than Aether. And as much as I adore light and dark worlds in some games, like Zelda, it always just seemed dumb to me in Prime. The dark world is such a silly idea in a series that generally takes itself very seriously and is rooted in, while made-up, decently faked science. The Prime games especially go into a lot of detail about how a lot of the science of the galaxy works, and having a dark world just doesn't seem to fit in to me. Then toss in the fact that it hurts you and it makes me dislike it actively. The Boost Guardian is one of my least favorite bosses I've ever fought. >_<
Torvus Bog is okay, if only for the Super Metroid Red Soil remix. But I do agree, it's pretty tedious at times. Sanctuary is probably my least favorite zone in the whole trilogy though, the whole sci-fi element is cool, but it has by far the most annoying enemies in the whole trilogy being those mini-Quadraxis guys. It kind of makes up for it with the Quadraxis battle itself and the cool look of it all though. I do agree that the Dark World is kind of **** though, it looks extremely bland and always puts a big stress factor on you. A minor pet peeve of mine with Prime 2 is also that it has the ugliest suits in all of Metroid, though that is of course subjective. I still think it's a really great game though, but like you I prefer the 2D games.

I generally agree that size isn't necessarily what matters, but not quite with SA-X, it's one of the easiest bosses in Metroid and dies too quickly. Quite anti-climatic after it kicks your ass repeatedly throughout Fusion.

And then when it actually gets bigger, it becomes easy as crap. :p

"Pic of the day. Two that are actually not so tall. Kirby's about 8 inches high, Captain Olimar maybe a little over an inch."
-Masahiro Sakurai

Oh look here, a DIRECT case where Sakurai shows how much he gives a damn about size discrepancies.

And before the downright asinine "different series" logic is used as counterpoint, Sakurai used canon size TO COMPARE THEM.
Even if we wanted to go by the "relative size difference" bs, it doesn't excuse the fact that Olimar is taller than Kirby when, ACCORDING TO SAKURAI, Kirby is supposed to be around 7 feet taller in comparison.

Though considering it's dedekong's usual drivel......some other half-baked excuse will be made as to why this is invalid...-_-

If that is what Sakurai actually said then how can I contest that?

Way ahead of you. ;D

I listen to Torvus Bog OR Tallon Overworld 1 when it rains. Occasionally Meta-Ridley's boss theme.
If raining at night, I'll listen to Tallon Overworld 2 but also occasionally listen to Gandrayda's boss theme.
I lsiten to Crashed Frigate when it's especially wet but not too rainy outside.
I listen to Phendrana Drifts when it's snowing and Thardus's boss theme when it's a blizzard.
I listen to Phendranda Drifts 2 when it's not snowing but still cold and icy. If it's partly sunny, occasionally Rundas's Boss them
I listen to Torvus Underwater Temple when the skies are grey and gloomy.
I listen to Sanctuary Fortress 1 if I'm out and about places at night.
I'll listen to Bryyo Cliffside during the day. Probably the only Metroid Prime song I had that's suited for a sunny day.
And a bunch of other Metroid Prime boss themes when the mood is right.

....And I listen to Amorbis's theme when it's night and raining which causes earthworms to litter the black concrete which makes it tough not to step on any of them and you hope you're not stepping on any and you need a flashlight to be sure... and that familiar smell of wet invertebrate flesh...

I know how you feel, but I don't have time at the moment to give my view on Prime 3's bosses. I'll do it later.

Okee... Prime 3 bosses...

Meta-Ridley, the hunter bosses, Dark Samus. Those were great boss battles. The other bosses... eeeehh... They just didn't stand out. And I can put part of the blame on the what I call the "Prime '3' boss tactics".

- Shoot the targets provided
- Jump over the shockwaves
- Avoid the body rush attack

These three tactics had the tendency to show up on almost every boss! Not just one or two, but all three. Even Omega Ridley exhibited this. I liked the Omega Ridley fight, but I can't ignore that even he suffered from this. But with Prime 1 and definitely Prime 2, your abilities were only a mean to further engage the bosses in what were often pretty raw battles. Prime 3 made its tactics so blatant. "Oh it's charging an attack, I have to target it with the Wiimote to stop it. Then I target that with the Wiimote. Oh, again..." There's a difference between targeting an enemy to blast them to death and just targeting because it's a thing the game expects you to do.

Doesn't help that Prime 3 bosses can become bullet sponges in order to encourage use of Hyper Mode. Especially Mogegnar (sp?). That guy was a ridiculous bullet sponge with target that didn't always hit even when it seemed like they should, and he could recover HP. Nooo...

Now in contrary, the hunter fights were typical Metroid goodness. Sure you still had to occasionally use a certain ability, but as said they were only a mean to further engage the bosses. They were otherwise heated affairs of keeping your guard up, staying on your toes... just a better sense of freedom for both the player and the foe they face. Meta-Ridley did have that "target this spot here please", but I only excuse that 'cause it's the beginning of the game.

Ultimately Prime 3 bosses ended up rather hit or miss for me. I can put part of the blame on already experiencing the previous prime games and having an idea of what to expect, but that doesn't excuse having an obvious boss formula and using it over and over again. That attributes to making an experience forgettable.

...BTW, the very final boss is just lousy on its own merits. =_=

Maybe Retro did that on purpose.....prime 3 is suposed to be the less dificult...and if thats repetitive....I think Other M does it worse....since i do not have it, i watched a complete let's play/....just for curiosity...and the way you kill normal enemies, is the same way to kill the bosses.....use sense move ALL the time...and shoot....that's what i think.....for some odd reason my cousin did not get the game for me after i told him i wanted to give it a try.....maybe because he knew how much i hate it that i would have used it just to DIE in purpose....that would have been REALLY fun...

The answer to all of this is don't use Hyper Mode (save for when you literally have to, obv). Suddenly even a lowly grunt becomes deadly beyond belief.

Prime 1 was also less difficult and still was more engaging with its bosses. I think part of it is that the developers were trying to appease the more casual fan base.

Eh it doesn't help the bullet sponge issue. I tend to switch to Hyper Mode because things aren't dying fast enough, not because I'm having trouble. Then again it's been a while since I've played Prime 3 and I've still yet to complete Hyper Mode difficult due to apathy.

Provided Oasis stops LURKING (I CAN SEE YOU NOW), I don't think we've done so since pre-Brawl days. And for good reason. We have more supporters than we know what to do with.

Recently, when playing through the Prime Trilogy again, I played all of them on Veteran (Hard). My thoughts were as follows on the individual games, if I can remember correctly:

Prime 1

Interface
: The most rudimentary of the three. Made it noticeably more annoying when trying to navigate menus after being used to the ones from Prime 2 and 3. The HUD and beam/visor switching, however, isn't a problem.

Story and the World: Probably the least compelling of the three, though still very good. Very interesting reading about the Metroid Prime in the Phazon Mines, gives you a little taste of what's to come. Also, the Omega Pirate substory was very interesting, gives you a look into Space Pirate life.

Locations and Level Design: New by Metroid standards, pretty generic by most. Phazon Mines, Chozo Ruins, and the Impact Crater all stand out as the best areas in the game. Phendrana Drifts still cool (lel), but Magmoor Caverns I could take or leave. The levels themselves flow very well, however, and give you a good idea of where to go without too much downtime. Very memorable, you'll likely have the world map memorized before finishing the game.

Upgrades and Items: Standard Metroid fare, though the items are generally used in different ways due to the different perspective. Nothing too interesting, though.

Significant Gameplay Changes: None. The fact that the game is in 3D is the gimmick.

Prime 2: Echoes
Interface: A step up from Prime 1, lore is now categorized and much easier to look through. Enemy scans give you more detailed information if you decide to read through their log entry, which I love.

Story and the World: Very intriguing, it's nice to see another Chozo-like race and their culture. Luminoth architecture and lore is very interesting, and Aether is very different from the other planets Samus has visited. Dark Samus's strange attraction to you is also interesting.

Locations and Level Design: Again, basic stuff. Ruins, Desert, Swamp, though the ruins in this game are very different from the ruins in the last. Agon Wastes stands out as particularly boring, with Torvus Bog coming in second, and Sanctuary ending up in first. Would be very interested in seeing a place like Sanctuary again. However, map design is very confusing. Areas are labyrinthine, likely leaving you confused and lost most of the time. Dark Aether, while an interesting and stressful (in a good way) challenge, is very boring aesthetically.

Upgrades and Items: Very different from other Metroids. More focus on Light/Dark aspects rather than elements, as well as featuring simultaneously the ugliest suit worn by Samus (Dark Suit) and the coolest-looking one (Light Suit). Also reintroduces the Screw Attack in a very cool way, and the Echo Visor is very interesting. The Annihilator Beam is cool as ****. However...

Significant Gameplay Changes: The ammo system blows. There's absolutely no need for it, especially since the Light and Dark Beams aren't much better than the Power Beam. The Annihilator Beam, however, could've been balanced better to not use ammo. The dual world system, in my opinion, is interesting, though it could've been executed better.

Prime 3: Corruption

Interface: Maybe a step down from Prime 2, maybe a step up. Depends on if you prefer the surreal "holographic display" version of Prime 2 or not. I don't care either way. Visual effects on X-Ray Visor and Command Visor are top-notch.

Story and the World: Prime 3 is the first game to take us to multiple planets, where we see multiple cultures and environments. The story is compelling and involved without getting in the way. Characters are introduced without them seeming annoying and we quickly establish connections with them. Killing them is sort of a bummer. Going to the Pirate Homeworld is hype as ****.

Locations and Level Design: Skytown. Skytown Skytown SKYTOWN. Level design is fairly linear, but easy to navigate. The different locations of Bryyo, Elesia, Norion, the Pirate Homeworld, and Phaaze are all very unique, and all of them evoke a "Metroid" feel while still being new to the series. Prime 3's world is easier to get around than Prime 1's, though I don't see this as a necessarily good thing.

Upgrades and Items: A balance is struck between Prime 1 and 2. We see new things in the way of Hypermode Upgrades, the Nova Beam, and the Grapple Voltage, while many old things return (NO SUPER MISSILES, WOOOOAH). No new suits, surprisingly enough, though there is a Gravity Booster-esque power-up in the form of the Hazard Suit. The drop of Beam Switching is a nice change, though I could take it or leave it..

Significant Gameplay Changes: Eeeeeeeuuuuuuuurgh. Hypermode. Basically, the Easy Button. You hit it, everything dies, you hit it again, you're perfectly fine. You lost an Energy Tank, but you can just get it back from all those enemies you just killed. Hypermode would need to be overhauled entirely to stop it from tainting this game.

While i like Prime 1 better, i'm always very fond of Echoes, it was the first from the prime sub-series i played, and i don't know but i think that Sanctuary Fortress have the best visual design of al Metroid areas/levels (not to far from Skytown Elysia).

Plus MP2 had the best menus i ever explored in a game.

Am I the only person who kind of prefers Prime 2 to the first game? It's interesting for me, because I had played Prime 1 way back more than ten years ago and was one of the first games that I had ever beat. At first, I didn't think much of Echoes because in my mind, it was "too much like the first game".

I've recently gone back to it and, wow, it's a hell of an experience. Literally, the game was one of the hardest that I've ever played. But it had something that the first game didn't really provide me with (barring Meta-Ridley). The satisfaction of defeating each and every boss (I'm looking at you Boost Guardian...) I didn't even mind going through Dark Aether throughout most of the game, because the experience itself reminded me of LoZ: ALTTP.

Now Prime 3, I'm still having a hard time getting in. It's the only game of the Prime Trilogy that I still haven't finished, and I've been trying to get back at it every two or so years. I don't know why, but I'm not getting the same level of satisfaction that I had from the previous games. But I've heard a lot about Omega Ridley, who's at the end of the game, which is why I'm still trying to finish it.

Now on Prime 2, I only played it once when it came out, and stopped around the part when you meet U-Mos. When I got back to it, I was ten years older, and was already more tolerant of high-difficulty games like this. It might be more of a case of just trying it out recently, when I had only played Prime 1 when I was a kid. I still plan on replaying it one of these days.

Oh sorry I meant the Torvus Bogg boss, the 1st main boss is cool too though.
I will say this for the Prime games: the water sections before you get the Gravity Suit are often incredibly nerve-wracking. You are so much less mobile under the water than everything else around you, and that's a good thing for the atmosphere of the game, because anything that lives under there could kill you really easily, which made the Alpha Blogg pretty interesting. That said, while it's good from an immersion perspective, I absolutely despise having my movement restricted. Especially when the game revolves around you being able to avoid enemy attacks, and especially when the Prime games give you way less freedom and speed of movement than the 2D ones. Getting the Gravity Booster at the very end of the area felt kind of like a big middle finger rather than a relief.

Torvus Bogg music though.
I had to listen to have even the vaguest idea what it sounded like. Prime 2's music hasn't been memorable to me in the least. To be fair, neither was most of Prime 1's, but at least Phendrana sticks out to me from that game.

Do any of you guys have ideas for what taunts Ridley could have? I wouldn't be too surprised if he had one a little comical like Bowser's.
