Oh yeah. I really did just include Young Link in an original 12 lineup. Timing works for being an easy clone to create. If Pokémon isn’t getting a second face, it really should be Zelda getting one instead.

And of course, it’s Luigi. He’s Luigi.

New: Luigi, Falco

Sorry, not too creative this round but this just feels right to me. Both of these characters are functionally similar to their counterparts in their own series, and Falco was briefly considered as an alternate costume for Fox alongside Peppy and Slippy. So in this universe they just decided to follow up on that and make him playable I suppose. And Luigi is as objective of a correct answer as you can get here.

Bowser and Peach feel like the most prominent characters missing from my 64 roster. Ganondorf still gives us a Legend of Zelda newcomer, and Captain Falcon provides a new series. I decided to put Mach Rider in E3 instead of Marth as Fire Emblem was region locked still, and I feel like Mach Rider would have a similar appeal that Captain Falcon had.

Pretty obvious choices here. Peach, Bowser, and Zelda all provide new faces to familiar series.

Ness is also here. He was snubbed from 64’s roster in this scenario, but he’s finally here for Melee.

Although, I do wonder if it should have been 12 veterans here, right? Luigi and Young Link will certainly return.

Bringing back the initial roster from 64, and then adding on some heavy hitters from mainstay series. Mario and Kirby get their rivals in Bowser and Dedede, and Link gets his companion in Zelda. Well, sort of. I decided to stick with Sheik since they’re still Zelda, but are a bit more of a striking fighter. It would be interesting if later Smash games adopted whatever the most dynamic new version of the character is.

Oh yeah, and Pikachu is finally here. Pokemon is the biggest reveal of this bunch, finally bringing what had become an inescapable worldwide sensation over to Smash properly with promise of more to come.

I think Mewtwo and Mr. Game & Watch would be viewed as reasonable choices given the former’s popularity on the Smash 2 poll and the latter’s notoriety as effectively the poster child of surprise fighters. In Sheik and Ice Climbers’ cases, the characters are interesting mechanically, and Sheik over Zelda wouldn’t be jarring in 2001 given that Sheik was Zelda‘s most active role before Melee.

Pretty basic choices, but I wanted to go for a different angle with this roster.

Wario nearly made it into Melee in our world. Sakurai said if he could add one more, it would have been this garlic-loving treasure hunter (remember, no WarioWare yet).

Charizard and Mewtwo are just incredibly popular. With no Jigglypuff around, it feels more likely that the feedback from who the most popular ‘mons at this point were would be taken aboard with these two.

I had to get a retro face in somewhere. Mr Game & Watch is an obvious addition in that sense.

Judging by this layout, I think you’ll be able to tell who’s getting clones in this version of Melee.

Honourable mention to King Dedede. If there was one more space, it would be for him. I imagine Melee would have the most unmet expectations considering how rushed it was IRL.

3x5 rather than 2x7 due to the extra character slot from no Sheik.

This means Luigi, Wario, Young Link, Mewtwo, and Mr. Game & Watch are all unlockable.
