Congrats to Louie G. for winning. It feels the most like a roster that most people can be satisfied with, with a nice balance of first-parties and third-parties, and old and new.

I do think balance was important here, as a few of us (including myself) leaned too hard into certain franchises or third parties in my opinion.

I’d like to congratulate Louie G., who won this game for the evolving SSB roster.

Meant to speak on this the other day, but thank you guys. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad everyone connected with my ideas! I wish we got a bit more time to talk about what you did or didn't like about my roster, but feel free to let me know anyway.

In the meantime I guess it's time to kick off the new game. I'm not certain I'll be able to commit as confidently to this one as I did last time, since I'm gonna be pretty busy soon but we'll give it a shot. I think my general mindset skews pretty grounded, but maybe I'll try to make some bolder moves this time.





First thing to take note of is that Pikachu isn't here. My first subversion is to spin a bit of a different narrative - what if Pokemon had to wait to be added, since it was so hot off the presses overseas at the time? Assuming this roster is sort of evolving in "real time" to account for an alternate universe series growth, perhaps Pokemon is better suited for an addition in Melee after Pokemania. But if we wanna be extra silly, let's say the Pokeball item is still a thing in 64.

Skipping out on Marth because I believe the initial roster should have international appeal. Marth is a great addition to Melee as the roster was expanding, but putting myself in the 1998 mindset it would be a pretty bold move to throw him into such a small batch.

Otherwise, I'm trying to keep a reasonably diverse spread. I think these picks reflect a somewhat varied selection of archetypes, weight class, etc. The new faces are Peach, Little Mac and Wario. Peach provides us with an alternative zoner kit, and an aerial centric character to challenge Kirby. Little Mac carries a more traditional kit, the "boxer" archetype was already quite popular in established fighting games of the time. Maybe he even gets to be retooled off some of the other unused Dragon King animations / concepts. And Wario is kind of a hybrid sumo grappler with maybe some charge moves to boot?

1. Otoad64 - Pretty similar to mine, just with Peach swapped out for Pikachu. I really like the addition of Wario in 64, and I'm glad that other people had the idea to gravitate toward Little Mac as well.

3. Bowserking - I like the flavor that Duck Hunt adds here. I'd rather keep Ness or Falcon around, but I kind of admire the initiative to leave them both off and go for a sillier character alongside another that is quite the opposite (Marth).

Special shoutout to nirvanafan for Little Mac and getting to keep Ness around, but I find it hard to support a roster without Donkey Kong.

I find it hard to leave out Luigi on this type of roster given that he is the player two character. For my second clone, I’d love Jigglypuff, and I thought I was a clever choice for a Kirby semi-clone, but I’ll experiment a bit and choose Mach Rider as a Samus semi-clone. (S)he’d work better as a Captain Falcon semi-clone, but this is what happens when Captain Falcon is in my SSB64 roster.
