Ike was the newest Fire Emblem protagonist at the time of Brawl’s planning, so I think he’d be a good fit for this game. Ridley was a highly requested character, and he is a major antagonist from Metroid. Pokemon Trainer (please note that they are three fighters as they swap among three pokemon) works closer to how they do in Ultimate where there is no stamina/type gimmick, and they would be able to switch pokemon midair. I kept this fighter because the gimmick is cool, and the pokemon trainer is an important part to their series. Sonic is here as he feels like the quintessential third party pick.

Obvious choices here. Ike was from the newest Fire Emblem at the time, Diddy helps boost DK after Melee, Isaac brings in Golden Sun.

Sonic is THE third party pick in my opinion. I had to include him. Plus it’s kind of neat for a platform fighter for its primary third parties to hail from a platformer and a fighting game.

King Dedede missed the boat for my Melee roster, but he’s finally here, bring Kirby to three. Ridley is here to give Metroid another character.

Alright, I think it's time to start taking some liberties with this roster. Up til now we've only had characters who have made proper debuts in the Smash series, so this time around I'm going to add Krystal and Tom Nook. The former is decidedly one of the biggest rising stars of this era, featuring prominently in three Star Fox games between Melee and Brawl (while the series was still plenty active). Her magic staff would provide a unique new gameplay hook that we haven't seen anything like yet. The latter is the mascot of a promising new IP, one that Sakurai struggled to make a moveset with at the time. But I dunno, I'm built different. I also generally like to include silly unexpected fighters when possible.

The rest are your usual suspects. Pit and Olimar are added to further fill out brand new first party series. One being a retro throwback, another being a new series born during the GCN era. Ike is the natural choice for Fire Emblem at this point, and Sonic is Sonic. Even though I was willing to take a liberty with the first third party pick, it would be a bit ridiculous to snub Sonic the Hedgehog.
