The Pokemon Company comments on Sword & Shield DLC

Swsh_company.jpg

GameInformer interviewed The Pokemon Company about the Pokemon Sword & Shield expansions. The two expansions are the Isle of Armor and the recently released Crown Tundra. This marks the first time that a mainline Pokemon game has received updates, instead of one or two updated standalone versions of the game. The comments by The Pokemon Company told the following:
  • With DLC, the company thought players would enjoy being able to use their favorite Pokemon as soon as possible.
  • This counteracts how previous games worked,
    • Before, to use Pokemon obtained from an initial mainline entry (i.e. Pokemon Gold & Silver), they would have to be traded into the updated standalone game (Pokemon Crystal)
  • Dynamax Adventures came out of the team wanting to introduce new elements to Max Raid Battles
  • They wanted to change how Legendary Pokemon are captured
  • No comment about if more content is planned for Sword & Shield
Pokemon Sword & Shield, and both expansions, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra are both available now.

Author's Note: Have you picked up the DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield? I haven't. May do so soon. Let us know in the comments below!

Gee, did the vocal backlash from the past year and a half somehow NOT clue them in on that?

They wanted to change how Legendary Pokemon are captured
And yet they're still doing Event codes for certain Legendaries in certain countries that require a physical Game Stop visit or some equivalent in the middle of a pandemic. Says alot, really.

This DLC is complete nonsense and not even worth a penny.

Why would anyone with some sense pay for this when, as far as monster collectors go, one can buy Yo-Kai Watch 3 for a cheaper price, a big and beautiful base game, actual good animation, challenge and content, a 752 monster count in a single game with no transfer service and completely free DLC and online multiplayer?

I get the feeling you really like Yo-Kai Watch 3.
Is it on Switch? If so I might get it.

It's a 3DS game. That makes it all the more embarrassing on Pokemon's part. You even have to get an 8GB or larger SD card for your 3DS just to download it digitally due to how much content the game has plus all its free DLC.

Liking it has nothing to do with it. Even if I hated Yo-Kai Watch, it wouldn't exactly change the fact Yo-Kai Watch has 5 customizable victory animations EACH for every befriendable monster and all said animations actually look great while Pokemon doesn't have victory animations for its monsters and all animations they do have all look so unimpressive in general.

That's just ONE example, mind you.

Maybe you could just, not shame people for liking what they like?
I'm pretty sure what he's saying is that one is obviously a much better deal and-for most-will be a better experience. Though it was worded a little harshly I'll admit.
Yeah, the wording in those types of posts are a big reason why the Pokémon community at large (yes, this includes those who liked SwSh and its addons) are usually stereotyped as a gang of bullies. I personally had no issue with most of the things the games are criticized for, mostly on account of me having only played Sun beforehand. Regardless, if we just keep flinging insults at one another instead of acting in a civil, sensible manner, then nothing is going to get accomplished in the long run, and those stereotypes will remain.

Agreed. It really should be easier than it actually is to like or dislike something without people acting toxic to you for it.

You can like it all you please. I never once said that you couldn't. Not my problem if you do or if you pay for it nor is it my problem if you're convinced or not. It's your money, not mine. Doesn't make it any less of a terrible deal compared to other options.

I love Pokemon and I love being able to use all my favorite Pokemon in one game. Doesn't mean I can't still criticize this nonsense. I like plenty of bad games myself and I have no shame for that because I have no issue calling out bad things in the things I like. Sonic 06 is one of my favorite games of all time. Not gonna pretend but it's good but I'm not gonna let that stop me from liking it fir what I like about it.

I already said earlier in this thread that liking or hating it has nothing to do with it anyway, but I apologize.

In fact, one other person on this site even admitted to buying the DLC, Home, the base game, etc all just to get one monster and publicly admitted to how irrational they were for supporting such a deal. It seems extremely unfair to toss accusations towards me but not them. I guess them purchasing this exempts them from "toxicity".

Agreed. It really should be easier than it actually is to like or dislike something without people acting toxic to you for it.
Indeed. That being said, if you wish to address "toxicity", I suggest you be equally critical with Pokemon fans that defend these practices by calling people that don't pay for it or don't like this deal "poor" or other such insults. They treat it like it's some kind of financial heirarchy and bullying kids whose parents would sooner beat their kids than giving their kids any kind of allowance to pay for these things as if they have no self-awareness of how good they have it over others.

It's really not "toxic" at all to point out that a bad deal is a bad deal. It's just being smart with your money. You can prefer and like the service but at the end of the day, it'd still be smarter to get more for less.

It's not as if it's a bad thing to be ashamed for falling for a terrible deal and it's not like I myself haven't done that either. It's just natural, if anything. I'm learning to trade stocks, so the feeling isn't new to me. Nobody likes or enjoys losing money unnecessarily.

This DLC is worth it IMO if you didn't despise base SWSH or are looking into getting SWSH. If you didn't like or don't want SWSH, then there's no reason to look into getting it again.
It's a step in the right direction for Pokemon, and can show what home-console Pokemon can be like when the Devs actually have freaking time to make something.

The DLC has given me 50+ hours of enjoyment, mostly the Crown Tundra, and I'm regularly playing Pokemon again.

This is also a step in the right direction ethically for Pokemon. The DLC provides a ton of new content compared to the typical third games, and is a vastly superior and less scummy method of making new Pokemon content post-launch. They also vastly dumbed down the number of version exclusive content for the DLC, and don't require the DLC for transfers of the Pokemon in the DLC or even to participate in raids. I got half of the new returning Isle of Armor Pokemon from just doing raids and surprise trades with other people before I bought the DLC. I could easily get all of them with utilization from the free version of Pokemon Home.
While TPC are still kind of scumbags with Pokemon Home and lying about the development of SWSH, this is a step in the right direction ethically. I don't think we'll ever get to the point where anything of this size is free, though.

that's exactly what he was saying. it should be reminded that there is a bit of a difference between being "toxic" over simply being "blunt".

a Pokemon game comes out with the following problems that longtime fans pointed out fruitlessly:
-large chunk of legacy members of the Pokedex unattainable entirely (when asked why, the devs' reasoning was suspect at best, and they started dodging when pressed further)
-it has a presentation that would be deemed unacceptable in this day and age if it were any other brand (seriously, there were trees in the Wild Area that looked ripped straight out of N64 Zelda OoT)
-the campaign is likely the standard formula once again. (new trainer, small town, starter Pokemon, conquer gyms and get proofs, meet evil team somewhere in the middle and IDK Save the world or something before you become champion. the only time I've seen differently was Gen 5 where N beat you to said champion title, and he wasn't playing.)
-the animations are minimalistic at best. (Distant Kingdom was particularly salty about this one)

it suggests that Gamefreak is cutting corners, or worse, getting complacent. and the majority of fans would buy it regardless of its quality just on the merit it's another core Pokemon title, and a new generation.

most other monster collector games don't have name recognition on the level of Pokemon, and honestly, that's really the deciding factor these days. I admit I've heard little talk about Yokai Watch among my friends, but there is a game called Nexomon that I've heard good things about, and I already see how that game wears its older gen inspiration on its sleeve from the get-go. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is also pretty good, and I've ran through the Complete Edition's two separate campaigns, how it handles team building, though, might be the make-or-break on casual fans...

TL;DR: it's one thing to like a Pokemon game... but it's another thing entirely to gloss over how the series is declining because it's Pokemon...

Precisely this.

If it were any other monster collector, the things you have to pay for would STILL be a completely irrational purchase.

As the proverb goes, a fool and his money are soon parted.

That said, I apologize if my bluntness came off as impolite.

About 7 years ago, I was exactly that kind of person.

I played Pokemon and nothing else and was convinced it was the best game ever. Then I played Yo-Kai Watch out of curiosity and I broke out of that shell since that series what a monster collector could be and could achieve.

Since then, I've been expanding my library and experience in the genre and this is where I would rank the ones I own or have played and researched a good amount of based on their overall quality.

No Monster Rancher on this list!? I am disappoint. :(

Haven't played nor know enough about that game to give it a fair placement and haven't gotten around to that.

I don't like giving reviews or baseless thoughts on a game or series I know nothing about.

Nobody likes an ignorant reviewer. It's why we look down on IGN.

If it IS a good monster collector, then good.
