Okay, so I decided to do a 100 character roster based on the rule that no series can go above ten characters. I tried not to cut too many, and the only situations where I cut characters were:
- If a series would go over 10 characters with my additions (obviously)
- If a character is already present in a meaningful way elsewhere on the roster (meaning no dual-identity characters, minus one or two exceptions depending on how strict your definition is)
In addition to this, I also had a self-imposed limitation: only ten third parties total. This was to help make sure I didn't go overboard on third party additions (which I may very well have if I didn't set this limit lol).
Also I went full bias with it. No shame, no regrets, characters that probably shouldn't be there are here. Boohoo.
Time to start the breakdown. Let's-a go.
Super Mario Bros.
The only cut I made to this series was Dr. Mario. Dr. Mario is, at the end of the day, still Mario, and Mario is already on the roster, and I wanted to add two new Mario characters, soooo...he was the easiest cut. In his stead, we have Waluigi, who I feel is the next most important addition. As well, I added Captain Toad, another very important Mario character.
Honorable mentions go out to King Boo and E. Gadd, mostly for their contributions to Luigi's Mansion, as well as Birdo, who could in theory work as a Yoshi echo, with a regular grab animation and a Neutral Special based on K. Rool's, where she shoots out an egg and sucks the foe into her face hole before launching them.
Donkey Kong Country
DK, Diddy, and K. Rool are kept, and we get Dixie to round it off at four. Cranky and Funky were considered as well, but space limitations kicked in.
Yoshi's Island and WarioWare
No additions or cuts here. Shy Guy would have been added had I had more space, but alas.
Ice Climber, Game and Watch, Gyromite, and Duck Hunt
No changes. Neat.
The Legend of Zelda
Link is a weird case in my "no dual identities" thing because technically they're different people each time. I felt Toon Link was both stylistically and mechanically different enough to warrant being kept, but I cut Young Link because I didn't want to stretch my definition too far, and both Link and Young Link are still "realistic" Links. Sheik is kept because she's not the same Zelda as the Zelda that's Zelda in the Zelda series. Zelda. Daruk is added as a newcomer because Gorons are awesome and stylistically different, and are a big part of the 3D Zelda games.
Kid Icarus
I think the three we have are fine. Pit and Palutena are mandatory and Dark Pit plays a major role in Uprising. Viridi's a genocidal jerk so she doesn't get to join. At least K. Rool only
attempted genocide. It totally has nothing to do with her badmouthing Chrom, Lucas, and Mewtwo. Nope.
Wii Fit
I wasn't gonna add the Balance Board, dammit. But the Trainer can stay. No harm no foul.
Metroid
Zero Suit Samus got cut for being the same person because that annoys me and I'm petty. Also what the hell suitless Samus shouldn't be stronger than suited Samus. I added Anthony Higgs since he's got some cool weapons and the Galactic Federation is a fairly important part of the series. Also he was the best part of Other M.
Kirby
The main trio are kept. Magolor is added because I loved Return to Dreamland and he's a good magic egg.
EarthBound
No changes. Just Ness and Lucas.
Fire Emblem
Lol I put in ten. I had to cut Corrin because I wanted three more of my favorites+Edelgard since she looks neat from the three seconds of footage we saw of her. Sorry, Corrin, but a sword and dragon powers aren't as cool as axes, magic, and swords. Plus she dresses better. Caeda's a Pegasus Knight so that's neat. She's a wonderful character too. Easily my sixth favorite character in the franchise. Celica would, alongside Chrom and Marth, mean that all three of my favorite lords are playable and that's wonderful. Merric is a good boy who uses wind magic. Merric is great. Chrom is more decloned and Lucina becomes a Chrom echo instead of a Marth echo to better represent canon. Good stuff. I almost tossed in Silque and Virion just because I love them as well, but I stopped myself. I could've easily made a fifty character Fire Emblem roster featuring other Nintendo series, but I didn't.
Star Fox
Slippy's part of the OG Crew, plus he has Guard to draw inspiration from. Blue Marine Final Smash. No cuts either.
Punch-Out!!
Little Mac comes Little Back, and he brings a friend. Glass Joe is the game's biggest joke character. You know how strong Mac is in the air? Joe's the same way...except he's like that on the ground too. Poor Glass Joe...but that's why we love him. At least he tries.
Mach Rider
Hell yeah Mach Rider. Bike based moveset with guns and stuff, as well as exploding oil barrels and a gear shift gimmick that shifts speed and handling.
Mole Mania
Mole Mania is a gift, and Muddy here is the main attraction. Hailing from Miyamoto's hidden gem on the Game Boy, Muddy can dig into the stage to increase mobility and toss around an iron ball to control the stage.
F-Zero
Samurai Goroh is the best in the galaxy, being the first katana wielder on the roster. Falcon is back too.
Pokémon
This was a tough one. The series had ten characters already, and I wanted to add at least two, so I had to make some cuts. I added Decidueye and Chandelure, two of my favorite potential choices. Sadly, Squirtle and Charizard were cut to make room for them. However, Ivysaur is still joined by Pokémon Trainer in the background, so not all is lost. Bulbasaur was always the best Kanto starter anyway. Ivysaur gets a new down special that rotates between Sleep Powder, Poison Powder, and Stun Spore, each with a different status effect attached.
Animal Crossing
Villager and Isabelle are still here because I have a brain lol. Animal Crossing is huge. Tom Nook also shows up, making three characters for the series. I almost added Blathers too. Sadly, I figured one owl was enough, so Blathers will have to sit this one out instead of reanimating dinosaur fossils to fight and attacking with sharks like Aquaman. Isabelle and Nook have their voices this time.
Pikmin
Alph is added as an echo and he uses Rock Pikmin. Justice for Alph. Olimar, of course, stays, but he's voiced this time.
Rhythm Heaven
Chorus Kids AND Karate Joe. Rhythm Heaven should have had a character by now, so I added two to compensate for the wait.
The Legendary Starfy
I love me some Starfy. Gluglug Lagoon is his stage. He's got transformation powers and a variety of spinning maneuvers.
Xenoblade Chronicles
I kept Shulk and added Elma. Almost added Addam and Mythra but I ran out of room.
Art Academy
Vince didn't use to be here. Instead Adeleine was added as a fifth Kirby character. But then I saw Vince's Assist and fell in love with his design. Look at this wholesome grandpa dude go. Paint your heart out, Vince.
Dillon's Rolling Western
Dillon has a great character design and comes from an unrepresented genre, tower defense. Plus western flair. And he's an armadillo, come on.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
Henry Fleming is a great character who would use steam based weaponry like his Eagle Rifle. His game is an underrated gem and one of my favorite 3DS games.
Splatoon
Inkling stays, and two newcomers are added: a Callie and Marie tagteam, and DJ Octavio. Fan favorite duo, and the main antagonist. Off the Hook take the Squid Sisters' place as an Assist.
ARMS
Boi-oi-oing. Spring Man enters as the first ARMS character. I know some folks find him bland, but I love toothpaste boy. Helix, Ribbon Girl, Twintelle, Dr. Coyle, Max Brass, and Min Min were all considered, but space limitations kicked in.
Mii
No cuts, no additions. Sorry, Mii Stockbroker.
Third Parties
Due to my own self imposed limit of ten, I needed to cut the two echoes, Ken and Richter. I also needed to cut Bayonetta for the same reasons: space issues. In their place are Crash and Lara Croft, gaming icons of the highest caliber. Honorable mentions to the three cuts, Steve, Ezio, Tracer, Frogger, Maxwell, Alucard, Chun-Li, Jill Valentine, Dragonborn, Master Chief, Chell, and many more, who were all considered.
Aaaaaand that's all 100.
