If there was one game that you would consider "perfect", or near-perfect, what is it? Also, what would a perfect game consist of? What games would you consider near-perfect?
I'd say Pokemon would be up there. It's a decent rpg series, it has addictive gameplay, it has a deep competitive side, and it generally appeals to all ages, and a wide range of gamers.

Ocarina of Time would've been perfect if it hadn't had been for the **** water temple!
I don't know why people hate the Water Temple. Sure it was hard back in the day, but it's a lot easier now.

Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut for the PS2 is a perfect game in my eyes.

The battle system was frantic and emphasized air combos, you could have multiples of characters if you had their Narikiri Doll, plus you had two story modes with different points of views, and each character had multiple hi-ougis/mystic artes.

Super Metroid.

Great Music.

E.G. Lower Norfair, (Green) Brinstar

Great sprites/backgrounds.

E.G. Samus's sprites, Norfair and Maridia

Good difficulty level. Going through it normally is pretty easy, as you'll likely find some, but not all, of the items, which will be enough to effectively beat the game. Leaves you to explore a bit, but overall has enough linearity that you can figure it out. For those who want something more, they can go for 100% or minimal% runs, speed runs, try sequence breaking past things like the Grapple Beam and Gravity Suits. There's all sorts of things you can do with the game, really.

But nonetheless, I wouldn't call it the perfect game. I think it's impossible to have a perfect game. Blah blah blah, I'm being technical, but if there were really a perfect game we'd all (or most of us) be able to agree on one game. So far no two people have said the same thing.

Exactly. This is solely a matter of opinion.

That was my favorite temple.

This.

Also, what's wrong with a little challenge? It's not like it was unbeatable, you just had to think about what you were doing. I can't stand how mind numbingly easy most games are now a days. If I wanted to see the hero win with that little effort, I'd go see a movie, thank you very much.

As for near perfect games, there are two that stand above all others in my mind:

Starcraft Broodwar
Easily the pinnacle of RTS, it sports near perfect balance that has maintained a huge competitive scene for over a decade since Broodwar's release.

Super Smash Brothers Melee
It's rare that you still feel like you're learning so much about a game after playing it for 7 years, but that's just the type of depth that Melee has provided us. A brilliant party game for the casual gamer that wants to see Yoshi fight Pikachu, and a remarkably deep and unique fighter for the competitive gamer in you.

Ok heres my thought on this, the water temple was where people who played the game without thinking got stuck. People who knew how dungeons worked and how things would be placed didn't find it hard. I completed it on master quest it took me about 2 minutes to figure out the secret bit which made it "masterquesthard".

but it wasn't really the extra puzzling that made it annoying; it was just the extra grunt work

normally if you recall missing something, you spend your maybe 20-30 seconds going back to complete it

in the water temple if you miss something, you have to run to like 3 different places to "backtrack" correctly

edit: and oh yeah, Starcraft is the perfect game

Half Life 2. This game is flawless, the overall experience is just completely fluid, and Valve did an excellent job of blending the gameplay with story development. The game never had a moment in it that felt terribly forced or awkward for me, not even the physics puzzles. After I got done with this game I felt completely satisfied. Not too short, not so long that it's boring. And the game had variety thrown in there too, with shooting, puzzles, driving, and even that level where you control the antlions (which is a blast by the way. I just love this game.

Fallout 1. Unlike Fallout 2, the entirety of this game was perfect, and the pacing was excellent (though I didn't think it was as good towards the very end). I wish that the gameplay was more varied than shoot the enemy in the eyes all the time, which is probably the only thing holding this back from being the most perfect game of all time. Fantastic game overall.

Starcraft. I'll be honest, I'm horrible at RTS games. I don't play them much, I'm bad at them, and I don't enjoy them that much. But as far as RTS games go, this one is the best. As a game for casuals it's varied, fun, and easy to pick, but it also has a lot of depth for competitive play. Fantastic RTS.

But honestly I don't think there's a perfect game. There's games that I think are shining examples of their genre (Starcraft, Guilty Gear, Fallout) but none of them are perfect.

I probably should have mentioned The World Ends With You for the DS. It is probably one of the best games I've ever played in my life. I COULD NOT put it down until I beat it. I played it all day for 3 or 4 days since I got it until I beat it. There was never a dull moment in that game.

I..... LOVE Tales of symphonia
but I would say the perfect game to me would have to be Star ocean: the second story, it had a sweet combat system, awesome story, and a lot of characters to choose from. I loved it, also a another one would be Chrono Cross.

ToS is an amazing game. Perfect? Maybe not completely, but as far as RPGs go, in my taste, it was as perfect as I could ask for.

Such a good game. Best of last year for me, probably. My friend just gave me a player pin IRL to wear, and I feel like the awesomest dork there ever was.

But for me, gaming perfection begins and ends with OoT. There will never be better, most likely. I hope I'm proven wrong, but it's just so darn good. It is my standard by which I judge games. Not very fair to the other games, is it?

I like ToS. Only issues I had with it was the battle system for a Tales game. It was a little slow IMO for a Tales game.

Which reminds me, I still need to finish my ToS PS2 playthrough...

ToS 2, I liked it a lot. As much hate as it got in Japan I thought it would be awful, but I enjoyed it a lot

FINISH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
Oh, I actually meant Tales of Symphonia for the Playstation 2. I already beat the Gamecube one, and I wanted to try out all the extras.

But I still haven't beaten ToS2 for the Wii, so you're not completely wrong.

smash bros duh....

No I would say killer 7. It has perfect visuals which are all impressive, a very clever story, nice voice acting, unforgettable scenes, and just an over all WTF to the game. I would consider this the perfect example for video games as artwork, I would also compare it to a being an excellent film.

A perfect game can only consist of one mode because as soon as you have 2 modes, one is better than the other and it lowers it

A perfect game a has great challenge factor.

A perfect game needs AWESOME gameplay.

Not that much games are perfect, IMO. Most of the games named here (Beside the obvious ones) are not perfect, the player just overhypes them to the end of the galaxy.

I would like to think as Final Fantasy X as one of the best games ever. I do not over hype it...That game just stands out amongst many other RPGs.

Now, I wouldn't think of it as the game to end all games, but it is up there as one of the best RPGs. It may possibly be the best one. That's all that I think...

Guitar Hero I, II, III, and World Tour.
Sonic 2 and 3 for Genesis.
Super Mario Bros. 3

My perfect game? Guitar Hero Green Day with You give love a bad name by Bon Jovi on it as an influential song. (Not like that will ever happen >.>)

QFT

A near-perfect game in my opinion is Ever 17: Out of Infinity. It's a visual novel, but it has a great story that hooks you in and doesn't let go. Only reason I don't think its perfect is one route in the game with my least favorite character. But even with that, it is still by far the best visual novel game I've ever played.

ToS was pretty good.

Starcraft BW, nuff said. this is the ultimate game.

10 years old and still widely played, has as many fans as some sports, perfectly balanced, I could say so many things.

The 1 negative I can think of right at the top of my head, is ppl dont like the genre of the game but that doesnt take away how good the game actually is. If some1 doesnt like fps's and said Halo 1 was terrible would you agree?

Banjo-Kazooie. I know it's biased, but here are some reasons:
-Humorous dialogue
-Diverse levels
-Outstanding music(I'm so pissed that Grant Kirkhope recently left Rare)
Banjo-Tooie kicked it up a notch with somewhat better graphics, a boss in every level, and gigantic levels, but Kazooie started it all.

On the blue planet next to the sun, can't miss it!
I'd have to say Enchanted Arms for the PS3. The battle system was similar to the RPG norm, didn't really bring anything confusing to the table which was a good thing. The graphics were absolutely dazzling, and the story was epic. The characters also had enough personality to the point where you could love and hate them.
