Assuming this leak is true, and these are the only newcomers left, how satisfied are you guys with the newcomer line-up? I suppose I wouldn't be terribly disappointed, but I feel like Sakurai would've added even MORE variety and classic characters to the mix. I don't know how I feel right now.
I'd be fine with it. Thinking about each of the characters more and more, they all make sense.

Villager: Animal Crossing was probably Nintendo's biggest IP without a character yet. The "unfit for battle" thing I always found strange, because we have Peach playable, and she's useless most of the time in her home series. Plus, Smash is famous for taking characters who you would never see in battle in their own games, and turning them into viable fighters. Never had any problems with this guy.

Mega Man: Popular fan request? Check. First appearance in a while? Check. Appeals to both fans of his series and non-fans? Check. No one should have any problems with this guy unless you hate the character or his games with a burning passion.

Wii Fit Trainer: Wii Fit Trainer is another perfect example of what Smash does best. Unlike most, I had no problem with her when she was revealed. I thought she was a clever joke character. Whether you played it or not, Wii Fit did sell, and in terms of Nintendo's history? It got Reggie to say "my body is ready." Any game that does that is worth a character.

Little Mac: Hugely popular here. Punch Out is a pretty famous series, and Mac plays unlike any fighter we've seen thus far. I doubt too many non Japanese Smashers have anybissues with his inclusion.

Mii: Like them or not, but Miis are sort of becoming a Nintendo icon of sorts. They do make sense. Whether or not you agree with their inclusion is another matter. Mii (hee hee) I don't mind. I can't wait to pit Nicolas Cage in battle against Donkey Kong.

Pac-Man: Namco's icon. Very important to the history of video games in general. While he may not have as much importance to Nintendo as Mega Man and Sonic do, Pac has crossed over with Mario before, and he's less out there as Solid Snake was. I had no issue with Snake. I love the ideas for some of Pac's moves, and can't wait to try him out.

Rosalina: How important she is to Mario as a whole is debatable. She has made quite a few appearances recently though, and has even bern playable in a main series Mario game. She's extremely unique as a fighter, and though I don't care for her as a character, how she is as a fighter allows me to overlook that.

Greninja: It only makes sense to include a Pokémon to market Gen 6, and I think he's a perfect choice for it. I love frogs, but Nintendo doesn't have too many big frog characters...UNTIL NOW. Finally, the frog can be a star! Oh yeah, and I like his design as a Pokémon and his playstyle and whatnot. This is the character I didn't know I wanted until he was revealed.

Palutena: I am completely okay with Sakurai bias as far is Kid Icarus is concerned. I loved Uprising. Palutena is a strange case; not many seemed to really hate her until she was revealed. I dunno, it's probably a case of "I wanted X instead of Y." Staff character though.

Chrom: I want Chrom in for what he represents. If Awakening truly did save the franchise, I would include an Awakening character to appeal to the newer players who probably want to play as someone recognizable to them, as well as a thank you to the fans for keeping the series alive. I will withold all judgements about his moves until he is revealed. Pac-man and Mii surprised me. Maybe Chrom will too. I just want an Awakening character in general. If another character were to take Chrom's place, I wouldn't mind, but I am completely okay with Chrom.

Shulk: Yes. I have never played Xenoblade, but I am to sometime soon. Shulk has plenty of unique options for a moveset. Sure, Xenoblade was eventually localized, but in a way, Shulk is like Japan's Little Mac. Shulk would be a character representation of what fans can accomplish, what with Operation Rainfall and all that. Please. Make it happen.

Chorus Men: Chorus Men could also qualify as Japan's Little Mac. Most people in the states would just be like "who?" Rhythm Heaven is bigger than Xenoblade, and certainly could get a character. Seeing how unique and diverse the characters thus far have been, I look forward to what will be done with these guys.

I just feel like there will be a few more hidden newcomers after the release other than shulk, chrom, and chorus men. Sakurai is really keeping things hidden this time about real detail of the game, even boss hazards. So im guessing characters wouldnt be different. The sal leak never states those are all the newcomers that's all the ones he knows and maybe those are the newcomers to be announced pre release but the ones he doesnt know are post release, which kind of explains rosalina. Maybe she was plannes to stay hidden but then sakurai decided to reveal her for super mario 3d world... just a thought

I've said it before, but I'd be incredibly disappointed. I'm fine with Little Mac, Mega Man, Shulk, and Palutena, but as for the rest, we've got:

-three nameless avatars (Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mii)
-two minor characters from big franchises (Rosalina - only had two noteworthy appearances; Greninja - one starter Pokemon out of 19, with nothing to distinguish him like what Charizard has)
-Chrom, who would be a third blue-haired swordsman from the same series as the other two, which doesn't exactly come across as being original
-Pac-Man and Chorus Men, neither of whom are particularly exciting and both of whom seem like they have to draw heavily from other games/characters in order to get something resembling a playable state

If we'd be losing Snake, Lucas, Ivysaur, and Squirtle in the process, that exchange isn't really worth it.

Anyone expecting more than Brawl has some issues. There is no way in hell we're getting 18 newcomers. 14 would be max if anything. That's what Melee had.

But haven't you guys noticed? they have been announcing newcomers a lot slower in this game than in previous ones. In Brawl then had 3 newcomers a month roughly. This game is like 1 every 2 months besides E3 which gets 3. The Gematsu newcomers are most likely it for newcomers. Simple as that.
Nintendo pretty much announce newcomers whenever they want and in what fashion they please. In Brawl they were all revealed in bulk during at E3 or other shows since those were the best times to do so.

SSB4 has Miiverse (tho he probably wouldn't reveal a newcomer this way) and Nintendo Direct so characters can be revealed at a consistent steady pace

K. Rool is hardly franchise-dead. He last appeared around the time of Brawl and there have only been two DK games since then (plus a port). Compared to DK games prior to Returns including spinoffs (solo DK games), K. Rool has appeared in about 90% of them and even appeared in a Mario spinoff.

Agreed on the rest. We have all the main characters except Ridley, K. Rool, and Dixie Kong from the core franchises. Impa could be potentially added later for Zelda, but that's about it. (Tingle has too mixed of a reception to ever be added as playable.)
His last game was 2008 (Brawl's release year), and that was in a Mario baseball game. His last game as an antagonist was 2007, and there have been 2 full-scale DK platformers since then that don't even reference K. Rool or his krew. It should also be noted that Retro has been at the helm since then, so they could be partially responsible.

Regardless, 7 years since he's been a relevant boss in the game, and 2 full-scale games with the supposed main antagonist being absent. You don't see that happening with Bowser, Ridley, Ganon (he only misses a game every now and then, but never 7 years off), etc. So maybe "dead" is an exaggeration, but he sure is being phased out pretty quickly.

I remember Sakurai is a fan of retro characters, and I noticed people saying the leak lacks a retro rep, and that they expect one, but I think Little Mac, Megaman, Pacman, and Palutena are pretty retro, Pacman is the face of retro, Megaman is in his retro Nintendo form, Mac and Lady had recent titles but I'm pretty sure were just one time things. I don't think the games need a dedicated retro rep.
As far as the leak goes, if it's all we get, I'd be disappointed, but that doesn't seem to be the case, unless it said so, because I thought all of these leaked characters were supposed to be revealed at events, if that's all we get, that would mean no secret characters, besides veterans.

The thing with the retro choice is that it was in context of whether Sakurai plans to ressurect another retro franchise or not, and he said he had plans for Smash to be involved with that iirc. None of those character would require a ressurection, so either there's an unknown newcomer or he plans to do it via a stage or something else.

Maybe Little Mac is his retro and he's thinking up a new Punch Out game? You never know with this man...

I don't see why it'd need a revival after 6 or so years, and even then I imagine a sequel would be helmed by Next Level Games as they got a lot of praise for their work on it.

Another likely scenario is that the plans to have a retro character were just dropped entirely.

He was teased in DK: TF.

I don't see why it'd need a revival after 6 or so years, and even then I imagine a sequel would be helmed by Next Level Games as they got a lot of praise for their work on it.

Another likely scenario is that the plans to have a retro character were just dropped entirely.
I'd like Next Level to work on another one, as Punch Out Wii is fantastic. And i'd still like a retro rep. It just seems like we're not going to get one :ohwell:

Ganondorf hasn't been the main antagonist of a game since Twilight Princess which was 2006.

Sheik hasn't appeared in a game since 1999 either, unless we count OoT's remake, in which case that renews both Ganondorf and Sheik.

Recency doesn't matter anything for veterans though, as proven by Sheik, Marth and Jigglypuff in Brawl. It mostly matters for newcomers, and even then as far as we know it only really matters for Pokémon and Fire Emblem since Game Freak and Intelligent Systems are involved in picking the characters themselves, and of course want as much promotion as possible. I'm fairly certain recency matters nothing for DKC, as proven by the Kremlings being in Smash Run.

I was just pointing out that he's wrong about Ganondorf. He said he took the odd game off, but not 7 years like K. Rool. In fact it's been around 8 years since Ganondorf was the main antagonist of a game. And unless he's the boss for the Wii U Zelda, it could be another 5 or 6 years until he is the boss of another Zelda game.

So, I know that Snake is very likely not coming back, but did the leak by any chance mention Snake being cut or returning?

Just a question to the Sal Romano Leak supporters (including myself), why do people think that the leak contains every newcomer, and that because of this leak we think that that Sakurai will reveal the complete, final roster before launch? It doesn't sound like him to me IMO that he will reveal every fighter in the game prior to launch or the secret characters will be only veterans or just the newcomers we already know about. While I do honestly believe that we will see every newcomer from the leak, I strongly believe that we will not know the entire roster or any of it's secret characters unless we play the game or someone with the actual copy of the game leaks the roster. I remember Sakurai saying that he wants to leave some surprises for Smashers when the actually play the game, and for some reason many Sal supporters I know believe that the secret characters will be full of only veterans. How is that a surprise?

Abridged Version:I believe in the Gematsu leak, I just won't blindly take it as the final roster. I will wait until I get the actual game in my hands before I try to "predict" the final roster based solely on a leak of (not every) newcomer.

Unless Japanese reviewers get the game early and leak the full roster . The Come Up!

The RH enemy in Smash Run is what makes me think the leak is probably true. But no where did Sal say that it was all the newcomers, and considering he never mentioned Rosalina that tells us that it's not necessarily all the newcomers.

We also have Ridley hinted at to high heaven, and there's reason to believe that Zelda will get a newcomer too. I don't see it being more than 3, but I definitely think we're due for more newcomers than just the ones on the Gematsu leak.

I'd be surprised if Sakurai did not have a few newcomers under wraps post-release, newcomers that are not a part of this leak.

Considering how old the leak actually is, and how prevalent it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai did something to alter the roster in order to keep it a surprise. I'd imagine a full year is more than enough time to change their minds on one or two of those characters, or even delay their development to keep them the aforementioned post-launch character DLC.

I'm pretty sure the trailer 100% confirms Ridley is NOT in the game. If you watch the video he is talking about boss battles and about how there will be other bosses then the yellow devil. That is when they show Ridleys shadow... He wouldn't be a boss and a character therefore denied.

He was teased in DK: TF.

What third leak?

There was one for last E3 & this E3.
The second one was posted right before the Smash Bros. Direct, the third one that came out pre-E3 2014 re-states what he said in the second one, but adds DLC and a Lucas cut to the mix.

I'm pretty sure the trailer 100% confirms Ridley is NOT in the game. If you watch the video he is talking about boss battles and about how there will be other bosses then the yellow devil. That is when they show Ridleys shadow... He wouldn't be a boss and a character therefore denied.
It 100% confirms he is in the game..

The first leak mentioned E3 2013. The second one doesn't imply anything about E3, and neither does the third leak, so it's likely that those are all the newcomers.
I thought
the third part Gematsu Leak said something character reveals at E3 could have been characters not stated... Maybe I'm thinking of another leak?

Sheik hasn't appeared in a game since 1999 either, unless we count OoT's remake, in which case that renews both Ganondorf and Sheik.
Scribblenauts Unlimited, 2012. She makes a full cameo among the Zelda characters in a WW-like style.

Or is it all the newcomers Sal knows of.....?
I don't want to sound like a broken record, but remember that Mashiro Sakurai at E3 stated he would like keep some secrets that people would have to play the game to find out. We did not know of every newcomer for Brawl until it was leaked by Japanese players who actually played the game, not someone who has " inside sources" from someone who only has revealed partial info of the game. Also, remember that the Dojo did not reveal secret characters until RIGHT AFTER the Japanese launch. I think it is best to wait until September when someone will inevitably leak every thing and not base everything about the roster on a leak about planned E3 reveals.

This is basically what anyone who supports a character not on the list is hoping for, myself included.

I was just pointing out that he's wrong about Ganondorf. He said he took the odd game off, but not 7 years like K. Rool. In fact it's been around 8 years since Ganondorf was the main antagonist of a game. And unless he's the boss for the Wii U Zelda, it could be another 5 or 6 years until he is the boss of another Zelda game.
or
Hyrule Warriors

Oot3d was also a thing as well as WWHD
And ganon is technically still ganondorf so Albw
Not to mention Ganondorf is also repping the 3rd part of the triforce making him a major player in the series regardless of game appearances

Lol, I forgot about Scribblenauts! Just goes to show how she's still a popular part of the series 15 years later.

I dunno. At first I thought that was a stretch but the more I compare it to K Rool the more sense it makes.
ummmm
