RATE MY DK THREAD
​

Every couple of days someone comes over here and wants their DK to be critiqued, why spam up our boards?

The player can put their videos here and in the video thread. The difference is that this thread is for discussion, the other is just posting for future people to see.

Critiqued Videos
​

1. If you want to post multiple videos then please indicate which ones you would like to be most critiqued. When people critique someone they may only look at the first video so keep that in mind.

2. If you can then you should play actually sets with counterpicking and whatnot so we can see what you are really like in a tournament style (Real tournaments are the most preferable of course). Of course just friendlies are perfectly fine also.

3. If you have posted videos in this thread prior to this time that you want to post videos, and want to show or ask for improvement, either quote your old post or indicate it in the new post and state that this is you playing after critique.

4. Mention if you want a real in depth critique or just a couple of tips to help your game.

5. Remember, this is to help you, in no way will it hurt you to post here... nobody will yell at you (well I guess I can't guarentee that).

I don't think I need an extensive critique done but some pointers would be excellent, I am excited to use them when I play my friend again. We've had a few new DK players coming in, mainly from the Falco boards since Falco + DK = zomgwthgiantlaserpunch, so the rating could possible get them more involved.

USE BAIR !!! You really need to use it more, especially as an approach and RARing also.

Learn to powershield wolf's laser it will really help

I was gonna say giant punch more often until I saw you're 2nd stock

Here you go for the wolf match, I'll try to watch more later.

:05 fullhopping like that against a wolf is probably not the best approach. You should try to learn the timing of the PS on those lasers, It will make a huge difference in this matchup

:10 random dsmash is random. At this point in the game you should be going for dtilt, utilt, dspecial, and upB to start combos/strings

:28 keep doing the dtilt, not ftilt. Dtilt is much faster with slightly decreased range, if they are right on top of you dtilt or utilt, both have guaranteed follow-ups

:38 spacing >_> missed grabs are not good, reverse utilt is a very good option OOS and juggling wolf is a pretty easy to execute trap

:41 dont be scared of wolf in the air this was a perfect opportunity to use SA of spinning kong to get a free 18% or more

:43 double bair! be sure to buffer those in, you could have had him offstage and instead you were the one put in a disadvantageous position

:46 DK is in trouble if his opponent is beneath him, use headbutt to stall if you get knocked up high, and just go for the ledges, also be sure to FF to the part of the stage they aren't on

:48 you really should have air dodged this, would have given you a free dsmash or grab

:50 dtilt or jab here and you would have had him beat, but that was pretty unexpected

:55 again getting juggled, just get away

:59 roll getup and he would have whiffed, free cargo dtoss for a chance at a meteor, wolf's recovery is slow if he tried to upB right away you'd get him

1:05 i like to charge the punch while safe to bait an attack, but in this situation you should have used dspecial would have given you a bair string

1:10 NIIIIICE, well done on the gimp

1:17 shield and roll dodge? dspecial or spinning kong could have punished here, that was a very unsafe laser

1:27 spot dodge here would have given you a grab dthrow>ftilt

1:33 you already tried this before, you know his ftilt oustpaces shield grab, ftilt would have been your only move that could hit him here

1:34 roll dodge is not good, still could have hit with ftilt

1:37 uair or usmash could have started a juggle trap, dair is so unsafe onstage for wolf

1:40 roll dodge got punished again! if he didnt roll dodge too he could have fsmashed you

1:47 why didnt you paunch him? would have done ~15%

1:50 DK has an amazing getup attack under 100% why are you jumping into the ****?

1:53 nice punish and spacing, you should try and keep that charged more often for scare tactics

2:08 a SH bair would have landed here, was that fullhop intentional?

2:30 roll dodge war? dspecial and spinning kong punish roll dodge well, but you were too busy dodging around with him

2:43 you could have stayed on stage and gotten a utilt/usmash

2:45 roll getup or jump over them and bair are your two best options +100% either that or plank for a bit with spinning kong

2:53 again, ledge is safe for DK

3:02 mindgames lol

3:41 cargo after 40%, dtoss would have put him offstage

3:49 too far from the edge for that, should have used dtoss and gone for a meteor

ESAM, I know nothing about ZSS and there is really not so much you are doing wrong from what I can see.

running shield the over B. Watch her and make sure you air dodge them
ZSS doesn't have much if she can't hit you with that over B, also note it has a tipper if I recall right. So just always running shield in, bc most will SH over B and try and get you with it. Avoiding the over B seems like easy enough advice but it seriously gimps her killing potential on you.

I watched all of these videos.

Too much fair at times where it wouldn't kill your opponent. It's fine for edgeguarding (sometimes) and for surprise, but you threw it out too much, at low percents. You also used more jabs than I would like.

Too much headbutt! This moves is great when it hits but often isn't worth using. I usually only use it when my opponent's shield is weak from a down+b or up+b. It's better to throw it out after a bair (instead of a second bair) rather than just throwing it out from the ground.

You keep double jumping above your opponent. DK is very bad at hitting people who are below him. Stick low to the ground.

Use all of DK's tilts more. All three of them are extremely good moves. Lately I have especially been liking the up tilt. You do use them, just not enough.

Your Lucas friend needs to stop using PK Thunder to hit himself so much. He used like 6 thunders in a row on brinstar, and none of them were required. I know I'm supposed to be commenting on you and not your opponents, but seriously. Less Thunder, Freeze, and upsmash! More nair and dair!


I know I said a lot, but overall you were quite good. I was especially impressed by your first stock against Diddy.

:03 Meteoring onstage at low %s is a no-no, bairs are much safer, you might have tried utilt from below the platform as well

:16 good thought on the tech chase, i wouldnt reccomend headbutt though spinning kong is much safer, especially if you SA the getup attack

:21 why didnt you go for the ledge? dont jump into the ****! DK's plank stall is really good, and rather safe

:30 you jumped into the **** again, and this time it caused you to SD

:36 charging fsmash mindgame? you should have done dspecial or reverse utilts, big spacing moves are hard to avoid when your opponent is cornered like that

:30 missed combo is missed! try and keep those juggle traps going, predict the air dodge and keep her in the air ZSS is vulnerable in that position

:33 again, back off from the sharking

:38 lesson learned i guess, iirc double jump and spinning kong can be grounded on the slants

1:19 this was the appropriate time for dsmash OOS

1:27 remember that ZSS can outspace your fsmash with the whip

Summary
You have a few bad habits that you really need to be mindful of, excessive rolls/spot dodges, onstage meteors, and jumping into juggles when the ledge is open. You also SD'ed in both matches, and you probably could have won the 2nd if you didn't. You didn't use much grounded spinning kong, although it isnt very good in this particular matchup. You also missed a lot of opportunities at juggle combos, which could have made all the difference for you. Your DK is definitely solid though, more experience and you'll be doing fine.

Yeah, I figured thats the charged smashes were meant to mindgame, but the onstage meteors are still not a good idea. Don't be offended by this stuff, everyone makes plenty of mistakes in their matches, I know it comes off kinda harsh but its meant to help.

Against Claw, the one thing i saw is that at 0% you didn't really do the correct thing out of grab. You were cargoing and F-throwing, or D-throw to Down-b. The best option at 0 is to D-throw F-tilt, for i think 16-18%

CBK in your videos against demon I noticed that you only did 1 grounded up b in the entire set. WHY????

you were also very predictible and hardly mixed up approaching. you used bair>side b a lot.

you also kept using d smash when you wanted a kill and kept hoping for a hit. get in a better position for those things

anyway, cbk, you seem to be pretty good at predicting and forcing rolls/dodges/techchases, but you got a couple bad habits.

you fire off dsmash a lot, and a bit too early to ko, not sure why
on the ledge... you just upb and ledge attack
and you air dodge after the hit instead of an aerial, which you shouldn't do for DI purposes

also, you gotta work on your SA timing, i think I only really saw you use it against claw.
