do the guts of the new white controllers fit inside the shell of the old ones?

I want to get the long cord, but keep my existing external design

The guts fit pretty well in the case of other controllers, but my L and R buttons dont work. So im not sure it that was just me messing up or it not fitting correctly.

Usually you can fix the L and R buttons by tinkering with the springs that pop them out. I did it to fix my platinum controller, but you'll need a regular X screwdriver to take out the things that hold the screws in place.
