Considering Geno's prominence on the Japanese Tuukouken it's likely Sakurai considers Geno to be apart from the other third party characters because he's actually a member of a the Mario franchise.

Possibly, but in that case, I see it more of a case of Sakura fudging his defininitions, having snake, 1-2 other 3rd party characters, and Geno on the side. Purely as a third party character, he just doesn't stack up against the other powerhouses.

IMHO it isn't one single hurdle that's making Geno's chances low so much as him having a LOT of different hurdles. Every time he'd manage to make an excuse to clear one (not benig counted as a third party character in this case), there's another one in the way (him being a Mario character in a sea of Mario characters where there's still at least one more ridiculously popular and requested Maro character who isn't in yet)

Wait were you responding [and walking away] to me or McFox, because I made a very valid point.

And anyway, one thing Geno has over toad is that Geno can actually fight...and in an original way at that, and people would expect to see Geno fight. Toad may be more requested, but then again people also request Waluigi, because people, on the whole are stupid like that.

And if people want to play as toad there are plenty of Mario sports/kart games. People haven't played as Geno since the SNES days.

Your points are part of an aspect of a debate that's over. Back then, I was arguing about Nintendo's retconning of Geno and it's effect on Geno's chances. That debate has since then been dropped (or ended).

After that, I moved onto a new debate. It was about how Square's own wants and business needs affected Geno's chances of getting in Brawl. That debate too has since then been dropped.

I have not made any new ridiculously big post to debate in a while, and I am not in the mood to revisit old ones where the debate has already been declared "dropped". Instead, I am currently in the process of wondering and trying to discuss about the notion that Super Mario RPG actually made a RIFT between Squaresoft and Nintendo, as well as sighing at Marshigio referring to Toad as "obscure".

Your post is not involved in either of those two things. Instead, it is involved with old posts I made long ago, that I had already declared dropped, and that I thus no longer care about.

The Toad thing has to do with refuting a point Marshigio made about Geno (that Geno should get in over Toad because Toad is obscure and he's not). I mean, seriously. Toad OBSCURE?

Are you serious? I mean... videogame companies doesn't have feelings. And Geno appeared in Mario & Luigi, a Square and Alphadream joint venture, and nobody cried.

I can say something about the Mario RPG thing. I heard, back in 1996, that Squaresoft had a riot with Nintendo of Europe because Square didn't wanted to translate the game to some European languages. Then Nintendo refused to distribute an english RPG because it contradicted his policy of bringing translated RPGs to the gamers like Illusion of Gaia or Terranigma.

But the break between Square and Nintendo was because the N64 non CD compatibilty, cartridges weren't enough to their new and ambicious FF7 to fit in, so they sticked with Playstation as well as many others. After that Nintendo despised RPGs (Yamauchi said very bad things about them, like they were made for emo kids and were boring), ironically, the games that made SNES great were RPGs.

Geno is not a terrorist, it's only a videogame character. This is not like remembering the 11-S either... So don't stick with the "feeling" thing, it won't cut the chances for Geno to be in Brawl.

Good grief. Not much of a very statistically reliable poll if only 60 people voted in it, according to those numbers. Is that even the actual results of an actual poll? Only 4 votes for Geno and 4 votes for Ridley? What, was this poll conducted via a super screener that only allowed you to vote if you lived in the remote rural village down in the farthest most unpopulated corner of the earth?

From what I can tell especially after following the link within that link, that isn't an ACTUAL poll. That's the number of letters Sakurai presented that happened to mention each of those characters. He's likely received THOUSANDS of e-mails/letters, of which those are only a very small and random sample of. And that doesn't mean much. ...at all.

Actually, there were more than 10000 entries, but Sakurai selected the most interesting ones, from "what do you think about the game", "character suggestions" or "music/stage suggestions".

At the end, 310 entries were chosen. But as Sakurai stated, that's not a popularity poll. More like a massive brainstorming.

I already said it wasn't a poll, it's a mailbag. They recieved 10000+ comments, and chose 310 of their favorites for display on the website. They chose the ones whose ideas they liked, and they chose the ones which were entertaining. It could mean nothing, it could mean everything. We don't know. All we do know is that four letters mentioning Geno were included on the site. For whatever reason, the developers liked those letters.

It would be interesting to search the Geno ones and translate them to see if they are actual suggestions or the usual game suggestion mixed with a list of wanted characters.
It's more valid a "please, add Geno with that and these because thus and this..." than a "The game is very fast, please slow it... and add Geno if you like".

PD: I found them: 14, 86, 247 and 276. All of these make exhaustive post about how much they liked the game, the music and a renewal of Mario RPG by Geno appearing in Brawl, so they are all valid. Imagine 6000 more posts like those.

THAT'S AWESOME. I'm so glad they went with generics and not BS characters like Cloud Thank you so much for linking that! It's got Ninja and White Mage No Geno, but that's still really really freaking cool!

Back on topic, the mailbag was suggestions and ideas that people sent in, and Sakurai posted the ones he liked or wanted to share. I don't think it tells us who is going to appear exactly, because there are some, like Little Mac, who did not appear, but **** well should, and others that did make it, like Kalas, that would seem a little less likely than most.

But it does bear some significance outside of being a giant brainstorm, because it shows us what kind of ideas he is looking for, and we know that Sakurai has at LEAST read and enjoyed the ones he has posted, so he KNOWS people want Geno, and he KNOWS how much. Capice?
